I bought the wood (Merbau) to make a Nelson bench and was planning on using this method, but hadn’t seen anyone else do it. I was starting to think o was missing something structurally and that I was about to find out the hard way it wouldn’t work, so this video helped a lot - thank you!
I sold this one awhile ago to a friends mom and i havent heard anything about it breaking. and i've done a lot of other benches in the same style with the glue and nail method and havent gotten any complaints.
with the slats aligned vertical like that you get a lot of strength. Ive built a bunch of slat benches out of different woods anything below 4' you can get away with almost any kinda wood over 4' you wanna be in a hardwood. The one i build in the video out of walnut the slats were like 2" stall and 1" thick.. so its not going anywhere.
you can do it with just a regular saw blade and just take lots of little cuts, i did that before on a piece with my old contractors table saw. just gotta go slow and be careful.

Really awesome end result, great work
the high speed fast forwarding sound (radio?) Made it hard to watch with sound on.
Great work!
Yours is actually looks much better!
Very nice, easy to follow.
nice build man maybe next time at some music to the video so there's not 10 minutes of that scrambling Fast Forward squeaky Radio sound LOL
Making a similar bench. How is gluing and nailing the spacers in holding up? Was concerned that over time it might fail.

Can you tell me some of the measurements please?
I'm interested in the angle you used for the legs.
8 or 5, i cant remember which off the top of my head right now.
Inspiring
Does it bend at all in the middle? i feel as though without one long piece of wood it wouldn't be able to support too much weight

Joel Turner thanks for the info, I really like the Nelson bench but I don't have a dado blade so this design may be a little easier

Very nice
Well done
