I actually wasn’t going to do a worst of list. I’m going to talk about some of the disappointing 4ks in one of the videos next week same with worst films. I’m going to have 2024 wish list and Anticipated this week. Also going to do a movies on streaming only that need physical releases. But Mondays video will have a worst of mentions.
It really was a fantastic year. Not to many bad releases and we got a lot of classics. I think you’ll really like Night of the hunter. It holds up so well.
I have all these, but my list looks a little different. As you may remember, I’m in the Uk but I think the US got the better releases by far on the region only stuff. Not in any order: - all quiet on the western front (purely based on video and audio) - Point Break - Young Guns - mission impossible dead reckoning - talk to me - the pianist (Studiocanal) - Bloodsport (Capelight Uk release) - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (second sight) - the Wicker Man (Studiocanal limited box set release, a thing of beauty) - the warriors (also went for original artwork) A few honourable mentions: - the last emperor - the fugitive - Martin (second sight limited set) - picnic at hanging rock (second sight) - Titanic A few comments, possibly controversial. Night of the Hunter, whilst a great transfer, didn’t really do much for me. I sold it on. Oppenheimer - amazing technical feat of a movie, but I found myself getting bored and lost the story a few times. Outside of the Batman movies, Interstellar, Dunkirk and possibly Inception, I find Nolan movies to be a little overrated at times, as if he’s riding on the successes of the past.
Great list!! That limited edition Wicker Man release really was beautiful. One of my only regrets want getting that imported. We got a nice release but nearly as nice as that one. You’re not the first person who doesn’t love Nolan and have felt like he’s been living off of his past successes. He definitely has a certain style that if you can’t get behind it won’t work. I do admit i’ve cooled on Tenet and realize on rewatches that it has some serious flaws. Oppenheimer actually felt like a return to form for him to me. I understand not liking The night of the hunter. That’s a movie I didn’t think everyone would get behind but for me it works as a great piece of art.

Tenet, I just didn’t get it and it actually annoyed me. That said, Interstellar is one of my favourite movies and is a masterpiece for me, as was Dunkirk, which I felt built up the tension excellently. I also have The Prestige as well, which I just think is boring. The Wicker Man is in my top 10 movies of all time, so getting that limited set was a no brainer for me. As for black and white 4ks, I thought To Kill a Mockingbird was a good, as well as 12 Angry Men and of course Schindler’s List.
@benpascall4297 Those are all great Black and white 4ks. Schindlers list would probably be my number 2 in that department. I put Night of the Hunter at 1 mainly because I love the Cinematography in the film and the 4K enhanced that. That’s awesome that one of your top 10 favorite films came in that amazing collectors sets. Thats How I felt last year with True Romance and Robocop. Interstellar is probably my second favourite Nolan film Now. I thought that was a masterpiece as well.
@mzaentertainment5618 Yeah their big scene was the trinity test! Some people were upset that they didn’t show that part. Thats actually why Godzilla minus one is a great companion
I had PYSCHO 4K and sold it and bought the PYSCHO set but I think the single PYSCHO looked better than the boxset. I know you said it's the same transfer.
You’ve never heard that before? That’s one I see at the top of a lot of best action films of all time lists. I can see people not loving it because it’s cheesy but man it’s entertaining and well made.
Beyond being great action it is just a great movie. It is in my top 100 films of all time. I bought the version with the slipcover but haven't watched it yet. Owned Point Break since it came out on Laserdisc so I am looking forward to this new scan on 4K.

That would be in the 11 - 15 range. It wasn’t because there was anything wrong with the visuals or audio. It was mainly because only the one cut was in 4K and the packaging and price could have been slightly better but still top 15 of the year is pretty good and I absolutely love it.
I was thinking of doing separate lists. Maybe i’ll do that next year but I didn’t want to devalue The top 10. I always felt like Honorable mentions were better either at the end or before the number 1 entry. That way you don’t leave the viewer waiting to long to get in to the top 10.
Was really impressed with the restoration of The Fugitive.
So was I! That just missed the cut and that’s one of my favorite films ever so it was a rough omission.

I need a more than one session to finish the Oppenheimer. My expectations was I will see the atomic explosion but there was no scene of that at all.

Yea the first Psycho was the same transfer that universal did. That is a beautiful transfer.
It’s definitely the same transfer. Arrow did nothing with it but put their artwork on it

Could be the Placebo effect, The only difference is the menu if you have the US release but the scan is the same.
Do you recommend / focus purely on 4k or also on 3D Sound? I personally favor 3D Audio over Video quality.
I review the audio, Visuals and all the special features on the disk. I try and give as much detail as I possibly can.

Dude - do the honourable mentions before the Top 10 proper. Good to have a separate Top 10 for 2023 release and legacy catalog releases.
