It's interesting what you were saying about the back wheel in turns.no curb rashing here.better visability from side windows too. Nissan Leaf really bad for visability there.still a great car tho...
Aptera fans care about the vehicle, Aptera investors should care much more about the business model/business case. Unfortunately Aptera has a problem with the latter: to make this vehicle at a reasonable price and at a reasonable profit they will have to scale it to a point where supply will outstrip demand. That means that no serious investor will bankroll the ramp because, simply put, it isn't realistic. Even if it were realistic it is notoriously difficult to ramp a new product as expensive and complex as an automobile, even when the demand would actually match supply at a market clearing price. Hats off to them for getting a prototype to this level but I seriously doubt that this gets to production and stays there.
@@MrGamelover23 people were already driving cars when Henry Ford introduced his revolutionary production line based manufacturing process. We all need this, for the best of our future. Efficient, solar, comfortable, fun and everything we need on a daily basis. Big SUVs have their own utility, but most probably don't need it more than 10% of the time. This will be the preferred mode if you drive anything under 50 miles and don't need more than 2 seats for works or errands. Glad I am part of the mission with my reservation. Best wishes!

Exactly. My wife, Judy and I rode in the Alpha Luna in 2021, and even then it was more refined and had higher performance than a Kelmark GT kit car I once owned. I was expecting something with that level of fit and finish. The PI builds will be like going from a kit car to a supercar. The "delay" if you will, will have been WELL worth it for the increase in quality.
Wow. If I say much more I'll put my foot in my mouth but... I'm already a reservation holder and a bit more. I felt like I was there with you. That was incredible! I'm more sold on Aptera than I was before (and I already believed in the Aptera mission 100%.)
Great job here Drew. Your first impressions are genuine and unfiltered. We appreciate the input of your wife and uncle also, particularly because they nearly represent each end of the size spectrum. Thank you Aptera for being so open during your development, we love what you are doing, and thank you Drew for bringing this to all of us!!
Great review. I have watched a lot of Aptera videos and you provided two insights that I have never heard before; the driving/steering wheel center and the rear wheel curb rash! As an Accelerator Investor, hoping to have this vehicle by the end of next summer!
I actually interviewed with the company. I'm a 8 yr EV tech with cars many people speak highly from and on and I am genuinely excited to see this puppy on the road. Efficiency and modularity is key moving forward for ECO consumption reasons and this really has a lot going for it beyond hype.

I love this car. Definitely the way EVs and maybe even petrol cars should be moving. I do obviously like and sometimes need more space but this car is perfect for 95% of car trips. The fact is charges with the sun is just amazing, which I'd consider giving up extra space for. My only downside I have is that it isn't at least a 3 seater
IIRC, They said in one video awhile back that there were plans to elongate it and give it 2nd row of seats. But they wanted the proof of concept and narrow focus to just get it out there first, I imagine. Maybe someone can link the video i'm talking about for us.
I forget the number but the number of people on the roads with anything other than just one person riding in a car truck is super low. No point in heavily reducing efficiency for a scenario that is rather rare.
@@abrahamsanchez7331 you seriously think that's the way people reason when they buy a vehicle? This car is a 2 seat 3 wheeler which costs not much less than a 4/5 seat , 4 wheeler - demand will be smaller than required to make a profit. Take a look at Arcimoto, they also make 2 seater 3 wheeled EVs and suffered a similar demand problem.

So few compromises and so many advantages! Good, better, best. Never let it rest till the good is better and the better best, that is what Aptera is. I am a believer too!
The only compromise is seats. I am so happy to see a car that is willing to sacrifice the thing I don't need in order to get all of the things that I want and can't get anywhere else.

Nice to see a demo drive with the Aptera..Big Thumbs Up for the video and for Aptera....The only downside for my area is driving this in snow. Would really like to see how it drives in 3 - 6 inches of snow which is typical in New England. Hopefully, in the future there will be a 4 passenger setup for those with kids. Sono Motors was making a EV SUV with solar panels. They have been delisted from NASDAQ. I think they are no longer in existence. Maybe in the future, Aptera might consider branching out in the SUV direction Sono Motors was trying to achieve..
Aptera has wheel motors that can sense slip and adjust torque 32 times per wheel revolution, or about every 2.5 inches of tread travel. I live in Iowa and will report on the performance of an early model in the snow here. I think that with proper tires it will do very well.
if it gets reliable, quiet&comfortable and ready for EU rules I will be buying one (I have a reservation) Everybody would freakout if I drove one of these and it's the only EV out there that's more efficient than my old Ioniq.
So Jelly! Makes want to increase my investment to be able to get one sooner.... I really liked your review and your experience in checking everything out. It was filled with great comparisons and descriptions to give us a real sense of what you were experiencing. Thanks!
At the "for camping" I thought of some problems with going down an unpaved road like you may find in a national forest. The clearance around the frond wheels is not going to work very well. It would be nice if the the suspension could be cranked up into a "go slowly down the dirt road" position. Judging by the dimensions, and your size, I think yes, it could work nicely for camping for a weekend for just one person. It is too narrow to fit two people I think. Still that could be OK for some folks and others can easily bring a tent. There is enough room to bring what it needed for two camping for a lot longer than just a weekend. I think if would want to bring an extra solar panel or two and a battery pack. This way you can have options for charging the Aptera and also an option for cooking dinner as some distance to the "car" without a fire.
My wife and I plan to pick up our LE edition and take it directly to Death Valley from the factory in Carlsbad - a place we have been many times by motorcycle, for a camping trial.
@@garywozniak7742 That feels like a bad design choice. The lower wheel covers would give better range for the 300 miles of paved road. The lifted covers would only be needed on the 30 miles of unpaved road.
@@n.brucenelson5920 This time of year is about the only time I could survive death valley. Mendocino national forest is more my sort of place. Also, I like to be able to sit by a lake or stream and watch the fish without a need of a magnifying glass. Sadly, the place I would really like to go to was messed up by the fire. I have thought that it might be fun to take one clean across the country in the summer. The idea would be to pick camp sites close enough that the whole trip can be done with the solar.
@@kensmith5694 if you were to view the exposed portion of the tire from the front and calculate the area (tire width) × (distance from the ground to the wheel cover) that exposed area probably doesn't add that much drag on the off road package version. The intent is to prevent the wheel covers from hitting the ground if you hit a rut or "pot hole." It is probably a good option for people who need to drive on rough roads or in heavy snow. Completely removing the wheel pants would expose a much greater amount of tire "area" and add more drag at higher speeds.
Thanks for doing this video. I have a reservation and was a bit concerned after experiencing the VR version of the car. It seemed small and visibility wasn’t good in it, but I think the scale was off in the VR render. Can’t wait to see people’s reviews of the launch edition. I’m going to wait for the longest range version. Hopefully they will include a heated steering wheel by then, I currently use one almost all the time. Maybe you could request one for me 😉👍😁.
That thing is wild...as i expected. You are my height so this really puts the interior space into persepctive. Im really rooting for this thing. Have been following for years now. Its going to be really sick to see this spaceship on the road
Drew! I’m guessing, but this is the case for other cars, the reason for half of the window rolling down is because there isn’t enough space inside the door itself for the whole window to roll down into it! Same reason why some crossover rear windows don’t roll all the way down, it’s not a safety mechanism for kids like many people think, the window just can’t fit all the way down in the door. Perhaps the half window also helps with wind deflection when you have the window rolled down, but I think the first limitation is the main reason.
Good Thought OP but the reason for the 1/2 window is for aerodynamics. This writer had time BEFORE the San Diego Unveiling to talk to Mr. Anthony & Chris of MANY details. And I did take the long line to sit in the machine!
@@harriettanthony7352 that may be true, it might have some nice effects on the aerodynamics of the car if it’s rolled down while moving, but I bet they would give you a fully rolling window if they could fit it in the butterfly door. After all, I bet the aerodynamics would be the same if the window was rolled up on a full vs a half window. That’s nice marketing by them though, selling a limitation as a mark toward the mission.
I remember when there was pre-order and prices but you couldn't do much as for ordering online. Seemed like it was more of a contact to go over pricing for pre-orders. I was really intrigued by the look and idea starting off for it all. I'm just still at this time.....not there for financing one.😢
Preorders could first be placed at the beginning of December 2020. Actual pricing will be announced once they get nearer to shipping towards the end of this year. The vehicle has been completely re-designed since it was announced and will be a far better vehicle than was initially planned.
The Gamma was the original design production intent vehicle. That interesting material you rubbed is Kevlar in a polyurethane matrix that comes in sheets and is moldable. It forms a tunnel that is structural and would keep the front and rear suspension in sync. So to speak. But they found a way to really mass produce with a new process that the cybertruck and Toyota is using in some of its new trucks beds. SMC! But Aptera may be the first one to bring a safety cell to the masses. Along with an elegant platform for the batteries, crush cans and suspension. I am glad to hear your uncles comparison to the 240. I had a 280ZX 2+2 turbo. I was a good road car. A little light in the rear and a 5th gear that had no legal use. Your audio really picked up the motor sound nicely.
I found out about Aptera about two months ago and personally really really love it. So far it seems to be everything I am looking for in a car. EV with solar, sleek futuristic design, quiet as hell, good power, two seater and most importantly, reasonably priced. However, here is where my fears start to kick in. Unfortunately companies come and go all the time and while Aptera has a lot of potential, I am nervous of long term use. I personally do not travel far often and never go camping or anything so I don’t worry about any of that. However I do worry about the things like repairability. I know that as an EV it has a lot less moving parts, however if something goes wrong from a touchscreen that stops working to even changing the wheels (especially the back one) I am getting that feeling of trepidation that if I owned one of these and something went wrong I’d be told something like, “well we have only one dealer that’s located in California and the wait times are over a year for service”. I currently drive a Hybrid Civic and love it because it’s so common that you can find parts everywhere for it. For someone like me who cannot repair cars at all, it helps knowing any mechanic probably has what I am looking for. That’s the reason I currently drive what I drive.
Aptera is a right to repair company and will strive for 24 houir parts turnaround. I live in Iowa and have already had my local repair shops tell me that they will be glad to work on my Aptera when I get it. The plan to have mobile repair folks in Southern California, but the first several thousand Launch Edition vehicles will have to be picked up in person in California in any case.
Great review Drew, we really liked your emotional take, and you asked good questions. We saw Cybertruck yesterday at Littleton, CO Tesla Center, like you we are excited and if we can afford it we'll have a CT and an Aptera in our driveway ... 2025? Our 2018 model 3 is still doing well on double duty, great car. We did see the Gamma last year at the reveal in San Diego, but didn't get to sit in it or drive it. What a car!
I'm interested in how those wheel fairings deal with driving up a curb, in Europe you often have to park half on curbs and usually when you tuen a car's wheels they protrude from the body allowing you to crawl up a 6 inch curb, does the Aptera allow for this?
This was such a long time coming! Can’t think of any other creator more deserving of a test drive of one of these things. Love to see it. The Aptera rep who was riding shotgun was a very fun addition to the video, too!
Your wife is the first person I've heard who acknowledges that the steering wheel looks like the kid from Adventure Time. I've been saying this for ages now. LOL. Anyway, with the seats pushed forward slightly, it seems like they _could_ have put a third seat where the flat back area drops down into the cabin, for small-ish people. That would make it perfect for me because I have a son, but it's too far along to add such a feature. Maybe in the larger iteration coming in a few years.
The seats move forward about 12" - so people in the front would need to have their knees on the dashboard and anyone in a rear seat would have to have no lower limbs. Plus there isn't any empty space beneath rear storage deck or behind seating area.
@@amosbatto3051Okay, cool. I haven't heard this but it's good to know. I have heard that a later version will offer seating for 4 or more adults, but that's probably at least three years away assuming they can get to production (fingers crossed).

I was SOOOOO tempted to order an Aptera (still kinda think about it from time to time).... but being from the northeastern US, I can't imagine how it'd feel driving down the road on a snowy day, with the two front tires riding down the cleared paths through the snow/slush from the cars ahead, but that rear middle tire just riding the center patch that NOTHING ELSE touches. I almost feel like that'd be a receipe for a spinout disaster....
I live in Iowa and currently drive a Gen 1 Honda Insight that has the rear track narrower than the front. I will take delivery of an early Aptera model. I expect that the AWD model will be rather good in slick, snowy conditions with the proper tires, due to a very sensitive traction control that can sense wheel slip and adjust torque of each wheel about every 2.5" of tread travel. I will report on my experience when the time comes.
@@n.brucenelson5920 narrow track with two wheels is one thing. One wheel driving in potentially untouched, unplowed snow is a completely different story.
Ok.. I want to see it in the snow. or even rain. How do the cameras handle snow???? because 4 seconds into a drive, my model S loses the backup camera completely. how does Aptera handle visibility and heating in colder climates?
What would be really needed is a one year of daily car use report. It’s not like that company is here since yesterday. But I guess there are reasons they still build one prototype after another.
A big reason is that when Aptera starts shipping the vehicles will be fully validated and functional - unlike the Tesla Roadster that was shipped for a year with defective transmissions.
Solar means reduced operating costs. Important features for broke college students. Plus it has the option for Openpilot, which is a open source auto drive feature. It's more known then you think and the company continues to get more press and exposure. Tesla went through the same thing, and they still don't even do advertising.
@@bigredog100 And yet the most frequent question I get about my Model 3 is, "Is this the new Toyota?"
And that’s a good thing

It doesn't exist till it ships to customers. It sure feels close to existing. It's the supercar of efficiency. Carbon fiber tub, the look, it's quick, with efficiency between an e-bike and a Model 3 unless it's sunny, and you don't drive far...
Feels good catching on before the rest of society. Aptera or Cyber truck hmm
Best wishes!
yeah, right, let's not have hobbies that require materials, stuff and so....let's pretend we all want to live like you in the future. Let's also imagine that we don't need to haul more than two people, because, you know, families in general and children specifically suck and are climate murderers.
I would drive one for long distance road trips if I didnt have a family. The efficiency!
So efficient you need a second, proper car in your garage. That will definitely save some resources.

Drew, Of all the folks to make videos of the Aptera, I related to yours the best. It's OK with me that you're so into it. I'm also a believer, a fan, and can't wait to get mine. I appreciate the comparison to the Tesla Model 3. I can't wait to see your interview with Chris Anthony and Jason Hill. Thanks so much!
So interesting getting to see all of the features up close. Makes me want to preorder one. I’m 6’3” too so it was great seeing a taller guy sit in it confidently.
Actually saw a guy that was 6’6” sit in it. He said it was much easier to get in than a regular car. Production model will be a bit bigger too.
@@hardcoreherbivore4730 Awesome! 2% to 4% bigger will be PERFECT for me.
as someone who has also ridden in gamma I can relate to your excitement . I too was floored by everything about aptera, it's truly a groundbreaking vehicle. the latest renders of the PI build seem to show that even gamma will look like yesterdays news in comparison, which is saying ALOT, since gamma is extremely impressive. one can't FULLY appreciate aptera until you see it in person, this vehicle is going to be sooooooooooooo EPIC!!
our wait for our LE accelerator is going to be soooooooooo looong!!!
Jerry & Helen M.
Few deserve this experience more than you. You've been an Aptera enthusiast from the beginning. So glad they let you on board to try it out!
Great job here Drew. Your first impressions are genuine and unfiltered. We appreciate the input of your wife and uncle also, particularly because they nearly represent each end of the size spectrum. It pumps me up to see how much you're liking the vehicle and what you're seeing for the first time. Thank you Aptera for being so open during your development, we love what you are doing, and thank you Drew for bringing this to all of us!!
Great review. I have watched a lot of Aptera videos and you provided two insights that I have never heard before; the driving/steering wheel center and the rear wheel curb rash! I enjoyed watching your reaction driving and could feel the excitement. It was awesome, imaged myself driving and feeling that same excitement!
Very cool! The only thing cooler would be if this came fresh off a busy production line!😊
haha. It never will. Not enough profit on each one to sustain a company. If they were available, everybody would buy one, leaving conventional cars in oblivion.
@@edwardgabriel5281 No, if that were the case, they would just raise the purchase price till it matches their need. People would be buying this car even if it was 2X as much$$.

Great job with a down to earth first live viewing and drive!
Can’t wait for this vehicle. Even with a decent daily commute, it may never need to be plugged in.
Even more excited about my reservation.
Drew, I am so glad to see your excitement. My wife and I rode in an alpha prototype in November of 2021, and the progress has been astounding. Even the gamma, which was once going to be quite similar to the production intent builds has fallen fall short of what is going to be delivered! My wife and I placed the 42nd order Aptera got - for a Paradigm edition.
Excited for you guys to both get one!

This is one of the best Aptera videos I’ve seen since I learned about the car. Great job. Knowing it’s only a prototype, how quiet it was inside at speed with the windows up?
This one was a little louder than my Model 3 but it's body is made out of a completely different material than the production model which will have an effect on the noise so I didn't think it was worth commenting on
@@TailosiveEV That’s what I thought. Thanks for replying. I’m super excited for the Aptera. They seem to be doing everything right.

This vehicle is more important than the Cybertruck. When Apetera starts full production they will sell everyone they make. This is what we need, an affordable, easy-to-maintain, and enjoyable vehicle we all can buy.
They may sell every one they make, but gearing up for mass production is a huge job.
Agreed! This is proving to be very tough
I can't wait for people to start discussing aero stats like we understand mpg. Aptera is *very* aerodynamic. Miles to watt hour is also *very* good as well.
@@paulas_lens "Aero Stats" have been discussed in "car culture" dialogue for quite awhile but the folks involved in the conversation are mostly more on the "techie" side of the population. I still have a Jay Leno review of the older version that was around back in the 2020-2021 period. I'm pleased to see it returning. I know that introducing a new product is a difficult, stressful process. It's easy to sit on the sidelines (online) at try to pick holes in a new introduction and it just shows the cynical attitude that prevails online.
For an urban, short trip vehicle, this looks to be perfect. I don't know how durable it might be though. Careful, cautious driving isn't that common around most cities. I hope it survives.
what's price with full solar capability expected to be?
Perfect dialogue to end the vid; Drew: "I've got so many questions." Chris A. "We've got answers." Aptera's new tagline could be; "Aptera is the answer. What's your question?" Already looking forward to your interview w/ the braintrust at Aptera. Keep up the great work Tailosive.
I think you’ll love it! Happy to hear
Your camera opperator/wife had THE BEST line in the vid... "Cyber trucks & Apteras only. Nothing in between." Couldn't have said it any better w/ such an efficiency of words-- which makes perfect sense in the world's MOST EFFICIENT vehicle. This is the best "...1st Aptera driving" video done to date. Well done Drew from start to finish.
Thanks so much!
Love it. We could save so much energy by making cars lighter. 2 tonnes for a small car like a Model 3 or Polestar 2 is just ridiculous.
Wedding day vibes indeed! Drew, brilliant job on your Aptera video! Your feature descriptions and test drive of the Aptera Solar EV, helped us all experience the thrill of driving this must-have vehicle! Smart, Sustainable, Stylish. You and Aptera NAILED IT!!!
@@ajmwolf a 4 seater, three wheeler? Keep dreaming.
I forget the number but the number of people on the roads with anything other than just one person riding in a car truck is super low. No point in heavily reducing efficiency for a scenario that is rather rare.

Thank you Drew. This video answered the last questions I had about Aptera. Just did the reservation
I reserved one a little over a year ago and haven't been following the reservations, would you mind sharing roughly what number you are?
So few compromises and so many advantages! Good, better, best. Never let it rest till the good is better and the better best, that is what Aptera is. I am a believer too!
The only compromise is seats. I am so happy to see a car that is willing to sacrifice the thing I don't need in order to get all of the things that I want and can't get anywhere else.
Love your enthusiasm for all that you’ve reviewed. I do have reservation and I invested in this company. I had a reservation for the cybertruck, but canceled it. The is more practical for me and my wife. I’m a family of 6. Kids are grown up. Now time for adventure with the wife. Have a van, if the family wants to come along.🙄😂👍🏻
Good choice!
I’m 6’5 and also named Todd. Shoutout to your Uncle Todd. I want one. That is a really cool looking car.
The quality seems pretty good on this version. The door sound pretty solid when they shut.
You’re pretty much the only actual person I will watch EV videos like this. Everyone else sounds like a salesperson lol

I would love to see a closeup on the back"mirror" / screen. I expected a mediocre quality thing like many cars have, but it looks like really solid! 😀
The AC around the display is genius. Those displays get so hot.

That looked like so much fun to drive. I can't wait!!!
if it gets reliable, quiet&comfortable and ready for EU rules I will be buying one (I have a reservation)
Everybody would freakout if I drove one of these and it's the only EV out there that's more efficient than my old Ioniq.
They have an "off road" option that has wheel covers with more clearance.
It's so obvious you're in seventh heaven! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I can't wait to see these things on the road.
This could seriously be the future
Thanks for doing this video. I have a reservation and was a bit concerned after experiencing the VR version of the car. It seemed small and visibility wasn’t good in it, but I think the scale was off in the VR render. Can’t wait to see people’s reviews of the launch edition. I’m going to wait for the longest range version. Hopefully they will include a heated steering wheel by then, I currently use one almost all the time. Maybe you could request one for me 😉👍😁.

Im really rooting for this thing. Have been following for years now. Its going to be really sick to see this spaceship on the road
Great test drive video. So close to the final production model. Looks fast fun and comfortable.
@@Jet0919I think the aerodynamics aspect is more a full roll down window could not curve enough at the top to maintain the airflow desired.

I'm so jealous. It was cool to see your excitement.
That’s a good point. Do you know the framerate of the Tesla blindspot cameras?
I think this will do well if they can productize it and get it out on the market. Seems like there is still some work to do, but I hope they make it.
Most innovative car since Citroen 2CV.
That was a fun car. I experienced it in Germany. Aptera will be MUCH faster and more solid, however.
Congrats! Very proud to see the journey you've had to get to here
When I was a kid this is what I imagined cars of the future would be. Compact and self-charging.
Thanks Drew. This was a really fun drive-along review. I'm jealous now. I got the sense that there is a Q&A to follow. 🚗🌞

God i hope these make it to production. I wish tesla would invest in this company can you imagine a partnership?
Yes. The wheel covers rise with the wheel, unlike the front air dams on most small cars. I rode in a prototype and there was no issue.
This was such a long time coming! Can’t think of any other creator more deserving of a test drive of one of these things. Love to see it. The Aptera rep who was riding shotgun was a very fun addition to the video, too!
Happy to hear you enjoyed it!
Drew, tell uncle Todd who is close to my age, my second car was a Datsun 240Z after selling a muscle car getting 12 mpg on a good day.
When I lived on Maui I owned a Datsun SPL 311 convertible sports car that came out before the 240 Z. It was a really fun car to have in Hawaii
Hello kitty 😻
@@narphizoid6:19 As you can see at that point in the video, there definitely is room for legs of a "small-ish" person.
Aptera is planning to offer a 3rd kid's seat in the back as a option, but it won't be available in the initial release.
@@amosbatto3051Okay, cool. I haven't heard this but it's good to know. I have heard that a later version will offer seating for 4 or more adults, but that's probably at least three years away assuming they can get to production (fingers crossed).

Great first look! I love the quirkiness of the Aptera. I think this and the Cybertruck would be a great two-car solution.
I'd also like a hybrid or ice car for the next few years. I live in the northeast.
A beautiful machine
I love how the acceleration kept bringing a smile to your face. It looked like a lot of fun. I wish I had time to travel there. Maybe when they are closer to production I'll make time.
@@theElemDragon I will report on my experience. The wheel motors have the ability to adjust torque delivery independently.
I can’t wait to get my Aptera, but don’t want one of the first 2000 built when living on the opposite coast from factory.
I live in Iowa. I have already spoken with my local service people and they can hardly wait to see it!
Ok.. I want to see it in the snow. or even rain.
How do the cameras handle snow????
because 4 seconds into a drive, my model S loses the backup camera completely. how does Aptera handle visibility and heating in colder climates?
Congrats on getting to check this out! Really good week for the channel
For a college student would an aptera or a model 3 with autopilot be better?
Aptera hands down if you don't need the extra seats
