    I have a 6,7,8, & 9 string. The 6 & 7 are basically the same. The 8 & 9 genuinely feel like different instruments than just guitars.
    Going from 7 to 8 feels way different than going from 6 to 7.

    • @mikedills132
      @mikedills132 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How does it feel going from an 8 to a 9?

    • @manny75586
      @manny75586 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mikedills132 8 to 9 is about the same as 6 to 7. The big difference is just how thick the 8th string is going 7 to 8. Going 7 to 9 they are both basically bass guitar strings haha
      In terms of scale shapes if you tune it so you are doubling higher strings it's no problem.

    • @joekeith2819
      @joekeith2819 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find my 9th string lacks potency on the fundamental frequency... maybe its something I could fix with tone adjustments, but I am tempted to look into custom string gauges and pickups to make the low end full like a real bass

    • @joekeith2819
      @joekeith2819 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though, this is probably worsened that my guitar is built for a C# on the 9th, but i have it detuned to double drop B
      (B F# B E A D G b e)

    • @manny75586
      @manny75586 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joekeith2819 double drop B is REALLY low on a guitar. That's the low string on a 6 string bass.
      My 9 string isn't close to as thick as my B string on my basses and even the bass can get "flappy" down there.
      Especially if you try to do any close choral stuff.
      You can try thicker strings but you'll probably have to re-bore your tuning peg and, important, get a new truss rod or get it reinforced.
      I had a friend who put the string of a 4 string bass on a Mexican strat, it literally bent the neck/truss rod in less than a week.

    This is about 7 years late but I really enjoyed this video. I made the jump to 8's a few years ago and could not be happier. I get goosebumps so often when playing chords on an 8 string.

      Pretty decent guitar, get the frets cleaned up if they are sharp and new tuners, idk if they Improved or not, I got a used RG8PB and the tuners were awful, especially when you have to tune 8 stings, the rest was great tho.

    • @Snavels
      @Snavels 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only change I'd suggest is new tuners (locking if possible) and swapping out those pickups. The guitar you have now is pretty good (especially for the price) but it can be on par with the really expensive ones if set up right

    I’m picking up and 8 string soon. I went from a 4 string bass straight to a 6 string and I enjoyed the little bit of extra challenge. I like having variety with music. I may not always use all the strings, but they’re there if/when I need them. I work with a bunch if experimental musicians so they work well as compositional tools too when writing new material. We all play mostly metal so having the lower notes is nice, my buddy has a 7 string, but i also like lower notes for my own personal stuff that isn’t specifically to be “heavy”. Plus after playing a 6 string bass, my normal guitars feel tiny and cramped on a smaller neck.

  • @macpherson6457
    @macpherson6457 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I liked this one a lot more then the last one. Much better. Keep it coming if you have the time to make them. I have an 8 but currently I have been using it by baring similar chord patterns as my 6. Its not bad on the 7 sting but the low F# is harder to fit in this way. I love the blend of low and high you have here. Will be practicing these patterns in all chords.

    Dean
    New sub and thanks for content. Really good to see 8 string guidance.
    I picked up an 8 string after witnessing the majesty that is Tosin Abasi and it just fit. I have massive hands and the larger scale length always felt so much more comfortable. I have little or no basic training on 6 string - I played in my youth but didn't ever take lessons, lots of ear learning and barre chords so I'm essentially, starting learning guitar on a 30" scale 8 string. I do love it.
    I'm now (in my 40s) taking lessons and trying to build my theory knowledge and understanding but the one thing I've always found lacking was chord shapes for the 8 string and how to incorporate the additional strings where possible. I know I should be able to add extra notes once i know the notes in the chord but...
    I've seen you have a couple of other vids on chords on 8 string so I'll check them out but any other content re chords would be awesome.

    Have you tried chords and arpeggios in E4(330Hz)BGDAEBG1(49Hz) or G4(392Hz)DAEBGDA1(55Hz)? If your 1st string slot has a scale length longer than 26.5"/67cm, then you may have difficulty tuning up to G4.

    Dean: Very nice demo, Sir. :) Most people who play an 8 string electric guitar are ""acid" or "heavy metal" idiots. :) Every note they play sounds the same.....there is NO change in pitch when they play across the fretboard, as everything is so horrifically distorted. Your demo is much different, better and with more articulate playing. :). Also, what brand guitar are you
    using ? Thank you for your help. :) Antoine

      @l0rd_breeigo-sama954 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typical classical snob, calling the ,ajority of the people who use the instrument idiots. Thats the main problem with the entire classical community, their heads are so far up their own Assens, they basically go inside out. The goes for seniors, kids and inbetween. You maybe should look at your own playing before critiquing others, when quality matters so much to you. If people find that kind of playing fun then they should just do it, that goes for everyone, the millisecond you try and put material quality over something subjective you loose the whole point of music.

    There's a real easy work-around if you come from a 6-string and want to pick up 8-string quickly. Tune the 8-string so that 3-8 strings are standard intervals, with 2 extra high strings for 1 and 2. If you root off of the base string for your relativity, nothing changes, and now you have 2 extra strings in the high range to play with. I did all my scales and modes, arpeggios, inversions, etc. on tables to learn the high strings, but it's muscle memory from the lower strings just moved up a fret or two, depending on which mode you're using. Very efficient way to do it. th-cam.com/video/rO6EzQVwlyE/w-d-xo.html

    so im getting an 8 string soon, i've been thinking alot of about tuning it.
    i often play in DROP A & STANDARD E
    so i thought of this tuning; AEADGBE, so i have drop A power chords aswell as normal Standard E playing.
    but im unsure what to do with the 8th string.
    i was thinking of making it another A, an octave down
    AAEADGBE, so i can play heavy as hell metal stuff
    but that might make the string too loose , what do you think?

      Mellow, a lot of players use eBGDAEAE. this gives you those drop D cords rooted on your bottom two strings. Tosin Abasi does a good explanation of this tuning on a TH-cam video lesson.
