    Solid Review, i love my DR, I've put 6K on mine, its my fun after work ride. Mine is jetted along with same pipe, left the gearing. It will wheelie, and has great 50 - 80 speed. Gauges are straight out of the 70's, along with the seat. Bike is fun on the trails,feels like a heavy WR , way more torque, less jumpable. On the street its amazing, lots of torque, quick off the line & strong thru 4 gear, loafs along at 65 getting 47 MPG, tho stock tank is small for any outback, and as he said the seat is a great upgrade. I have my Harley for the long pulls, but i find myself riding this way more than i thot. Amazing reliability, Cheapest Bike to own. Even the hardcore bikers i ride with like to trade me and Boom they are back being 16, on a gravel road or light trail, reminds them of the reason they started riding.

      Enjoyed mine! Rode it on the street far more than on the dirt. Bike was flickable (is that even a word?) going thru the twisties. This after coming from a Softail and a Connie. Yeah. 16 again!

    I went from Windsor Ontario to Banf and Jasper parks on a bike. 5,500 miles in 18 days. I could not imagine doing that trip without some kind of windshield. Count me out on the no windshield mod.
    Oh, great video!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

      @sixthisoverdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Nash Thanks man. I know that I'm in the minority about the windshield. I just really love the wide open feel of a bike and find windshields rob me of that. Sometimes I like going to the states just so I can ride with no helmet even. Don't tell the safety police though. Lol

    honestly i like the DR way more on the highway. freeway speed gives mea deathrattle on klr dr is butter smooth. yeah it needs a seat and a tank. easy peasy

    • @twowheelsdown2002
      @twowheelsdown2002 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. The engine on the DR is better than the KLR. It runs up to 100mph smoothly, where the KLR feels like it doesn't like being revved that high. Feels like you are abusing it when you do that, and the DR feels like it's no bother. And the DR is super stable. I can stand up on it at 80mph while right next to a semi truck, and it is rock solid. On dirt roads the KLR feels squirrely above 70mph, but I have ran the DR up to 90 on dirt roads and it is stable. Put a bigger tank, and better seat on the DR, and skip the KLR. Plus the KLR will always weigh a ton more no matter what you spend.

    No frills, just straight talk. I thought it was a very fair evaluation. You're the only person, other than me, that I've heard say they didn't have a problem with the suspension. It's not a moto cross bike and it isn't going to feel like one. I don't understand why folks don't get that. If someone wants a perfect bike for dirt, that's also perfect for the road, then they need to buy 2 bikes. Something has to be compromised. Thanks for the video. "Thumbs up" from this Kentucky boy.

    Great review man... I bought my DR new in May this year. I've put the same 20L Acerbis tank, Seat Concepts Super Grip foam and cover kit and tossed out the OEM which was Japanese torture. Those are the first two essential mods. Then I dropped the pegs with JNS lowered pegs which drop and inch lower and back. I've added some protection to the bike: hand guards, case savers, master brake cylinder cover and a plastic Acerbis bash plate which is fantastic. It doesn't amplify the engine sound up like metal skid plates, it's lighter, twice as thick and easy to slide over stumps, logs and rocks. You don't hear the ping, ping of rocks off road either. I changed the headlight as well with a Baja Designs Squadron Pro which puts out 4,000 lumen and looks great. It really lights up trails and FSRs. I run them on high beam at night and haven't had anyone flick me their full beams yet as they are more of a spot than a wide spread. You can alter the low beam to whatever you want. I'm loving the bike. It's awesome off road. I don't have much to compare with my riding experience to be honest. I got my license last year and ran a CB500X which was a nice bike, but rubbish off road in stock configuration. Next mods will be jetting the carb and raising the handlebars for comfort. Everything in this video review is spot on. For tires I'd suggest going with Motoz GPS Tractionator. They can be flipped around to get a full off road tread or run as a 50/50 tire with excellent tread life and great road manners. They'll be the ones I switch the OEMs for in a couple thousand kms. Highway performance is decent if you're happy to travel between 100-130 kmh. I haven't put a screen on and have no plans to do so. If you want to see photos, look up @motozingaro on IG

    I love my DR650! Every time i ride it, i actually smile
    I have the same tire setup as you.. i really have no issue with the D606 on the highway or roads.. maybe because i don't push it in the corners because i know the D606 is no street performance tire.. as far as my Pirelli Mt21 front. It does give a buzz at speeds of 70 plus mph but that's to be expected with aggressive tread.
    I also have the FMF Q4 and ProCycles full suspension upgrade front and rear.. made a world of difference offroad.
    Very pleased with it.

    FYI, the taillight does not like washboard roads and will soon be aiming at your license plate. I had to replace two taillights before I realized that the DRZ250 taillight snaps perfectly into the DR650 fender and plugs in the same as the OEM. It actually looks better as well.

    I went Victoria to St. John's and back on a 17,000 km ride last summer on my DR. I modified my seat with an old life jacket and gorilla tape and did 1000km every day on the way home. Pad each side to make the seat wider, and a slightly higher, and leave a groove for your tailbone so there's no spinal pressure and cover it with a mesh cover from eBay for about $20. That seat and 20 litre Acerbis tank which gives more or less 400km highway range are the only real changes. On a road trip I highly recommend the Conti Trail Attack 2 tires because pretty good grip on the road isn't anywhere near good enough. The most important characteristic is wet, then dry, pavement grip. The CTA2 tires don't slip even in the biggest Ontario thunderstorms made from BC wildfire ash, or the hurricane force Newfoundland winds and the front tire will easily last coast to coast to coast (I got 20,000km and changed because of some cracking rather than tread wear) and the rear gave me 14,000 km. No need for a windsceen just wear a full face helmet unless you like eating bugs while only protecting your bald spot like a Harley rider.

    Nice work, I completely agree with that very succinct summary. I have ridden both the KLR and DR and I own the KLR just because Im a kwaka fanboy. It is great for hwy but its a beast through the bush to maneuver etc. I decided to go a little klx250 for the bush trail riding work but in the future if that gets too boring I might think about doing something like the DR. I had to choose between a brand new DRZ 400 and DR 650. I remember how long I was at the dealership trying to decide! (The Honda was out just because I cant stand a red seat! WTF is Honda thinking about?) - In the end I chose the DR 650. One reason is the DRZ, although set up a bit better for the woods (and I ride trails at least 50%), I knew on the highway it would pant and gasp for air doing 70 MPH, since 77 is its top. But a DR 650 can top out over 100 MPH, so @ 70 MPH it isn't even working hard. Plus the seat...on the DR 650 it is hard as a rock...but the DRZ it is just as hard but much skinnier, making it worse! And I liked the DR 650's "no-maintainence cooling system" (air cooled). Both are good bikes, but the 650 is more for me. If you are going to spend no time on expressways, but just back roads...and 80% on the trails, then a DRZ might be the way to go.

  • @a.whiteman4182

    For tires I installed a set of IRC, GP1's. They appear skinnier than the -death- trail wings, or any other tire I have seen. They grip fantastic, and they wear well on the road. However, they produce a lot of road noise, especially at higher speeds.

    I agree with the tank and seat, stock gearing works better for me, The rubber thing should be left in place to protect the frame, I see no need for an aftermarket exhaust, but I wouldn't ride past the city limits without an aftermarket centerstand. Aftermarket centerstands on KLRs, DRs, and now my little XT225 have saved my ass more times than I can count. They are really the only way to repair a flat out in the middle of nowhere.

      @sixthisoverdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gerald Scott The only time I have had to change a bike tire (which I suck at btw) I set my bike high centred on a fallen tree. But you are right...a centre stand would have been much better. Thanks for watching.

    I ordered the stock rack (made for the DR 650) from Suzuki and installed it (it's a tough install, have a drill ready). It looks sleeker than any after market rack, but is much smaller. It weighs probably 3 or 4 pounds though, as it is steel, not aluminum. But it is very functional. Recommended -

    You mentioned the seat was great if you're short... How tall are you? I'm looking to get a bike and I'm 5'7" I hear the DR is better than the DRZ 400 for this reason, plus I plan on more highway than dirt.

      I'm about the same as you...maybe 1/2 an inch taller. You can also mod the suspension to lower the bike as well if you are still feeling uncomfortable. (has a lowering link in the rear suspension, and you can raise the front shocks in the clams by 1/2 and inch.)

    I found the D606 virtually unusable on the road. First, it squirms like crazy around corners, and makes you feel like you are about to crash. They also don't last very long on street or dirt. I would consider them nearly a 100% dirt tire. I found the stock gearing fine off road, a little low on the highway, but I don't ride it like a crotch rocket so I'll leave it alone for now. The tank and seat are must haves, I saw no reason to replace the stock exhaust. It does need to be rejetted a little richer if you ride mostly at low altitude. Fortunately it still has a carb. Probably the most important mod I've done to mine so far was to install an SW Motech centerstand. I have had 3 flats so far, and would have been stranded if not for that centerstand. I have now replaced the tubes with those super thick heavy duty 4mm tubes from rockymountainatv.com but an occasional flat is still going to happen. Considering that I ride 50+ miles out into the AZ desert by myself, a flat could be fatal without that centerstand.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do get used to the tires quickly. I just recently returned from a trip where I did 870 kms there, and 870 kms back on the d 606 in the back and the pirelli mt21 on the front and when I was in BC I was leaning over pretty heavy, or at least as heavy as I do on any other bike, and while neither the steering nor the slightly marble y feeling from the tires was confidence inspiring, once you got used to it, you realize that it's going to stick no matter what you do with it. The tires made over 2000 kms on highway and hard hill climbing trails that trip, and still have quite a bit of life left in them. I do have to say, that the tooth drop was almost essential on the dirt, but I could have used that extra tooth on the highway as I think I worked the old girl a little hard. I did get it up to 155 on the garmin gps unit though!!! lol (unfortunately, I also experienced some oil seepage from the top of the engine...ooops) I absolutely love the sound of the exhaust, and any weight savings on the bush pig are welcome, but my buddy uses the stock muffler and likes that he didn't have to play around with the carb. Thanks for weighing in.

    • @thugstomper8625
      @thugstomper8625 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stock exhaust = terribly restrictive so Suzuki could pass emissions with an air cooled carborated engine...plus heavy. It's 12 pounds and a Suzuki Gixxer 600 muffler is half the weight and not restrictive.

      Surprised to read that you did not like the D606 tires. I have used with these tires exclusively after my initial offroad ride (36,000 miles ago) with the horrible trailwings. The 606's sing a little on pavement but are excellent offroad and provide pretty good grip on dry pavement. Probably 75% of my riding is on pavement. The DR must be geared down to ride trails, the stock gearing is good for 100+ mph. I have had a few punctures offroad and would never consider a center stand. I have used stumps, rocks and once a ditch to lift the rear wheel off the ground.

    This is from Australian website
    MADE IN ITALY
    Macchi now oversees production at SWM’s manufacturing facility in Lombardia, Italy. Formally occupied by Husqvarna, the plant recently benefited from a major refurbishment under the watch of BMW prior to the sale of Husqvarana to KTM.The Lombardia manufacturing facility is now wholly owned by SWM.SWM officially announced the revival of the brand at EICMA 2014. Production quickly commenced after the event with production of the first RS650’s taking place in July 2015.
    As the RS models are based on the Husqvarna design, SWM has been quick to gear up production and 1,500 vehicles are set to manufactured in the first year with 6,000 forecasted for 2016.
    A global importer network has been quickly established by calling on relationships with ex-Husqvarna importers - in fact the majority of European importer network are ex Husky.

      49% owned by a Chinese company, but still built , designed and made in Italy , with the exception of the plastics and some other minor parts.
      here is some interesting info you may what to know ( about the BWM 650 GS ) The China connection is provided by the present 650cc single (used in the G650GS). The engine is built at the Loncin factory. From there engines are shipped to Germany (where they are used for the European and US market G650GS) also Harley does have many USA factories, but they admit they have a factory in India for that market, making smaller bikes like there street 500 & 750. The KTM 390 is made in China ,Benelli now is made in China ,Yamaha for the US market come mainly from either Taiwan or China ( with some of there bikes ) Although they all have JYA at the front of the VIN, the plant code is different. Also a lot of smaller Suzuki motorcycle 250,s and below are now made in China ( this is just the tip of the ice burg ) almost ALL manufactures make some of there parts in china now, Moto Guzzi seems to be one of the few manufactures that makes all there bikes in Italy.(all manufactures are trying to stay competive production costs )

    • @itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449
      @itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neil Lawday I Agee , the the DR is old outdated technology, with typical poor suspension you need to upgrade, and let’s not forget a low powered carburettor 20 HP less then the SWM , yes the SWM has Brembo brakes , Sach suspension, fuel Injection, and the SWM Superdual comes standard with , crash bars , rear rack , screen , 18 lt tank , 12 volt socket, centre stand , bash plate ( most of this you need to buy for the DR - making it more expensive ) so I agree doesn’t even come close to the SWM on performance, suspension, brakes , handling and stranded equipment. One I forgot has a 6 speed gearbox as well , we’re DR is only

    • @lawdayl
      @lawdayl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even with all the above I preferred the dr handling and ergonomics. The swm just didn't do it for me. Not to mention better dealer and parts support.

    So basically, the DR can be modded to be better on the highway, but the KLR is too heavy and clumsy for off-road? Plus the DR is lots nippier with a less "un"-powerful engine? So, lighter, faster, stronger and nimbler than the KLR... Hmm... now let's see which one I want...

( Only money you need to spend is Heated grips and better seat is you like more comfort )

      Paul Chidgey That is a better bike! I'm not sure about there, but when we had that bike here, you could almost buy 2 of these for the price of one of those. Thanks for weighing in.

    • @itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449
      @itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Price in US dollars would be about 8500,00 ( fully kitted out as standard ) " also has cush drive as well " A DR in US dollars is around $ 5500 ? and then your up for at least another 2 for suspension upgrades ,seat, tank , etc etc ! I had mine has done 5000kms of at least 50% off road and some pretty narley stuff. 2 Aussies rode from the UK to Mongolia last year on two SWM 650 Superduals over 20,000kms, with little problems. A lot of Pig owners in Australia are being converted. Dr,s are old tech now - don't get me wrong they are a reliable bike that does on and off road well ( but nothing great ) were the S/D does off road great - as it is an Adventurised Husky TE 630 ( or now SWM 650 RS ) and road is very good. With Euro 4 being in not sure how much longer the DR or KLR with be able to survive without fuel injection.

    • @Xanatros
      @Xanatros 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SWM is being certified by Transport Canada for this spring of this year. Pricing looks to be around $10,500 to $12,000 Canadian for the Superduals. They look like a nice bike, all the right features and decent power, but being Chinese made they might have a hard time selling them. I will definitely be taking a look.

    • @itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449
      @itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have it wrong they are made in Italy, In the same plant were they used to make Husqvarna, prior to being brought by KTM then sold by BMW to them. The Husky designer of the pre- 2013 models brought the SWM name and then approached one of the largest Chinese motorcycle manufactures in china for the finical backing ( they have a 49% share holding ) but the same workers and designees went back to work in 2013 to make the same bike under a different name, Only Chinese parts are the plastics and some other parts. Engines, frame, Suspension, brakes ,wheels, all made in Italy . Check out the Australian reviews on the web ( as are in English or UK ones )

      KLR is about 70 pounds heavier than the DR650 and wait till you tip the KLR in the dirt and wipe out a $200 piece of plastic. To me the plastics on the KLR ruin the bike unless you are highway only and then why buy an enduro? I much preferred the earlier KLR with only a small windscreen. KLR is reliable but after owing 150 bikes my opinion is that Kawasaki went backwards putting all of the fairings on the newer KLR's. I much prefer the simplicity of the DR650 or First Generation KLR.
