    Nice video!! And for anyone who doesn’t know, going 60mph in one of these old Jeeps is quite impressive, and a little scary!!

    My Dad bought a 1969 Jeep CJ-5 from the original owners . And it had a Warn Over Drive and a 8000 pound Ramsey P.T.O. Winch. But the coolest thing to the then 16 year old me was for whatever reason they put in the dash on the left side an altimeter from a PBY Catalina Flying Boat. We went the highest mountain in the area where we lived the forestry dept. had a fire tower there with an elevation marker and it matched the altimeter perfectly. That was the vech. that I learned to drive a manual trans. on and it's also what I took my driver's lic. test in to get my very first lic. and was lucky enough to score 100%.

    Nice thanks for the cruise and demo. I am aware of the OD system and have not convinced myself that I'll need it. Just putting in the seats now on my 58 CJ5. She runs and I drove it a couple times. Hope to be road testing it in spring. OD will be on my mind.

      I have the same setup in this CJ-5 and 55mph is comfortable, i have gotten it up to 65 but it unstable. Remember they weigh less than 2600 pounds and have a poor stock steering setup. Happy Jeeping.

    ..... Thanks, as I needed the insight on the Warn OD ...
    ..... I've been driving my '88 Comanche 4x4, 5 speed, 4.0, long bed for years...
    ..... And just bought a '65 CJ Jeep Willy's, 4 Speed, Warn OD.... So I wasn't sure about using the OD... I was just thinking using it like a 5th gear... But now, I see, using it in all gears, makes the availability to select as many as 8 gears ... Wow, that will help the 283 SBC get the best MPG ... Wow... I'm feeling less anxiety about this new Jeep already... Regards.....

      They are useful, just try not to downshift with it. Or accelerate hard while it is engaged, remember it was designed to be behind a 4/6 cyl not a small block V8. Happy Jeeping.

      @@southernjeepand4x481 Thank you for the insight... So, I will make a point, to place the splitter in 'direct' before accelerating hard or before down shifting... Yikes I think I can get used to the 'plan', as at 69 y/old I am not driving wildly or abusing my vehicles.....

      @@larryg.9187 These overdrives are pretty tough, I think you'll find the transmission is the 'fuse'.

    In this CJ-5 I suppose you can do all transfer box functions with just the one lever, as military version MB-38 and Flat Fender had 2 levers for that. The lever further back I guess is for the PTO winch.

    • @southernjeepand4x481
      @southernjeepand4x481  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This has the two lever Dana-18 transfer case, warn overdrive, and the lever farthest back is for the PTO.
      Thanks for watching.

      @@southernjeepand4x481 Thanks for the reply but still makes no sense. I can identify the gearshift lever, the OD lever, the PTO lever at the back, and one short lever which must be the transfer case SINGLE lever. Where is the 2 lever Dana-18 arrangement?

    Question , I have the same gauges you have under your dash except mine are right square in the middle of the shifter. If I installed the overdrive would I have to reshape the lever as to not hit the gauges or do you think it would clear them?
