    We entered this matchup into our blind sample pool because they're both sought after bottles from the Buffalo Trace distillery. At suggested retail prices, Elmer T Lee sells for $43 and Eagle Rare sells for $33. Often times Eagle Rare is marked up to $60-100 by price gougers and Elmer T Lee is marked up to $300. We wanted to see if either struck us as anything special when tasted totally double blind.

    Admittedly we had an excessive amount of outtakes, tangents, and hot button topics in the bloopers at the end of this video. We’d apologize, but we’re not sorry. 😂 Be sure to weigh in on some of the discussion points here in the comments.

      I always watch the bloopers! One day I'm going to have to keep a bottle of Eagle Rare for myself and give my Dad something else, LOL. I do have a Weller SR I haven't opened, so maybe I'll give him that next time. I finally opened the Henry McKenna and it was much much better than I expected. It was like liquid honey and I really enjoyed it. Did you ever watch the Community clip I posted?

    My wife and I have only been drinking whiskey for about 3 weeks and today I found a 375 ml bottle of Eagle Rare 10 yr for 21 dollars and I grabbed it because I have not seen it anywhere else around us. We tasted it tonight and OMG!! it was awesome and we are still noobs but are starting to really smell and taste stuff cannot wait till we are even better at it. I have a question, people compare Eagle Rare with Russel's reserve 10 yr. Am I right that Russel's is a Wild Turkey distillate and a higher Rye mash than Eagle Rare?

    • @exjw8623
      @exjw8623 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I answered my own question, lol. Wild Turkey is 13% and Eagle Rare is 6% so not a huge difference but due to our noobness we prob notice it more.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got it! Wild Turkey is a higher rye mashbill than Eagle Rare, but we don’t get too hung up on mashbills. Even folks who have been tasting for years can’t tell the difference between a high rye mashbill vs a wheated mashbill in a blind tasting most of the time. The details on paper are interesting to consider, but can unduly influence you if you’re not careful. That’s why we’re such huge advocates for doing blind tastings to remove any bias from the equation and let you focus in on what you truly prefer (plus they’re a ton of fun). All that said, welcome to the hobby! It’s a wonderful community of people and we appreciate you tuning in!
      If you like Eagle Rare, we’d definitely recommend grabbing a Tin Cup 10 Year, Bulleit 10 Year, Russell’s 10 Year, and a bottle or two with a little less age like Evan Williams 1783 and Four Roses Small Batch. Then grab a pack of 2 oz Boston round glass jars from Amazon, sticker the bottom of the jars with what you pour into them, mix them up, and randomly draw a sample to taste blind over the course of a night (or a few nights). Make some notes and then find out what each pour was at the very end. It’s a blast!

    Eagle Rare is really good, better than many other BT hype bottles especially the lower proof ones (looking at your Blanton's). I have a place locally that I see ER occasionally at 60 and I just bought my 3rd bottle. I think I'm good with 3 and won't buy a 4th until I finish the first one. I save that and my Blanton's for special occasions, because of how hard they are to get.

    Agree with your review on both of these. Hard to beat ER at retail for a 90 proof 10 year bourbon; RR10 is about the only other thing I can think of and it falls short or ER. It’s wild for sure. We’ve tried four different bottles and always been drastically underwhelmed. We’ve also given out half a dozen double blind flights with Elmer in them and it never places well. All anecdotal of course but pretty overwhelmingly consistent underperformance. We never see anyone try it double blind and it’s hard not to wonder if it would be as lauded as it is if people tastes it blind before knowing what they’re drinking.

    In short? Yes. Both are overrated. For them to not be overrated, they'd have to be readily available everywhere for retail. That they are not is why they are overrated.

    In UK Eagle Rare is about $41, but I can buy it every day. It is the same as in US, unlike BT which is everywhere in UK, but is reduced to 80 proof!

      I found out the hard way that both the 90 and 80 proof BT are sold in Japan. The 80 proof is terrible compared to the 90 proof, it was shocking the difference between the two bottles.

    I'm lucky - with an average price of around $37 my sub $40 bourbon is Wild Turkey Rare Breed. I might try Eagle Rare in a bar but I'm not going to go out of my way to find it. There are simply so many affordable and tasty choices out there that trying to find that FOMO bottle often isn't worth. There are a few I want to taste but I'm not going to spend multiple hours each week driving to liquor stores to find them.

    Talking about VALUE.. under $40, Eagle Rare is a special poor. On the positive side of thing, probably the most findable Buffalo Trace "Special" product. I have found it without even looking for it. Elmer T. ...... never seen it!

    Hi guys. First, bloopers are great. I love your practical outlook.
    My problem is this. The tv series, Justified, featured BT products. The whole line. BTAC, Elmer, Blantons,etc. btw, the show itself was 👍👍. Loved it. But, imo, that show may have helped generate some hype (FUMO). I’m guilty myself of overpaying for Elmer personally. Elmer, Eagle Rare, and Blanton’s, especially had a very high influence on that show. The prices for those bottles now are a waste of money. They’re not that good. Shit really. Spend $60 for a Knob creek Barrel proof. Or $45 for Rare Breed. I’m sorry, talking about Eagle Rare being so good, for the new prices, is just dumb. Here in Michigan, it’s a hundo for a 750 of Eagle Rare. $300 for Brandon’s.
    Plz don’t hate on me. But, BT is way over hyped. I appreciate the history. But, their shit isn’t that good.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  ปีที่แล้ว

      No hate here. We're pretty much in the same boat with BT products being way overhyped. There are a few we like alright, but by and large they're not really a fit for either of our profiles. And great point on Justified. Boyd was always reaching for Elmer, and Raylan and Art held Blanton's in pretty high regard.

      Fair point Paul. We leave some in if they’re part of making points during the video, but do tend to put the extra behind the scenes stuff where we’re not directly addressing the camera at the end. We appreciate you watching and commenting!
