Phil is locked into a pattern of behavior that impoverishes his business, either completely unaware of his role in his own failure or unwilling to confront that truth. He sees the symptoms - dead chat, weak support - but can’t connect the dots. He’d make a great lab rat for some sort of blacksite off-the-books clandestine psychological experiment. They could just simulate his current life and observe him under controlled conditions, measure his motor responses to external stimuli like landscapers and dead ants. The poor bastard would just sit there completely oblivious to reality, wondering why his own chat finds him dull and wanting of value, never questioning the narrow confines of the lab environment.
