Goalkeepers will go up for attacking freekicks and corners late in a game if the team is losing by one goal or sometimes if they are drawing in very important games. They do it in order to just get more people in the box and hopefully draw a defender away from someone else, very rarely the goalkeepers actually get on the end of one of the set pieces and on the even rarer occasion, they actually manage to score! It is one of my favourite things to see on a football pitch!
The Scorpion kick by the Colombian keeper was a mistake, he thought the England player had infrindged or was off-side and just did it for the crowd, only to realise it was still live play! A lucky boy.
your wrong my boy...he trained it many times before and waited for the perfect moment to do it, and that moment was in that match. Also it was a friendly match, who cares XD Higuita is just a legend
@@smey02 He may well have practised it m8 but he genuinely thought the whistle had gone and had no idea play was still live, did it for entertainment, watch afterwards as he looked confused. I read about it when I was living in South America. Shame to spoil everyone's thoughts about it but that time he didn't mean it.
The curve on balls is down to the Magnus effect. As it spins it creates a pressure differential across the ball so it moves towards its rotation i.e. If it's rotating clockwise it will move right, anticlockwise it will move left. The same thing applies in any direction you can get it to spin, so backspin makes it rise and topspin makes it dip. If you can hit it like a knuckleball and keep it from rotating then it's at the mercy of the air it moves through and kinda wobbles unpredictably. It's actually really difficult to kick a football without it curving because your foot usually comes at the ball on an angle which will inevitably cause it to spin in the air. The trick is getting it to spin how you want it to, and as much as you want it to.
All the types of spin/curve/dip: The curve on the Roberto Carlos freekick, is from spin. You can put side spin on the ball by striking across the ball with the upper/outside of the foot (which is what was done by Carlos) , this creates a violent arc in the ball flight but can hard to do accurately. Juninho also was a master of this technique The other way is with the instep and a "wrapping" motion of the foot as you strike through the ball, this causes the rotation and is easier to gain accuracy, but is harder to do from distance. David Beckham was a master of these There is another way to apply spin and that is vertically so , forward or back spin, Top/Forward spin creates dip, is hard to apply to a shot from the ground, and is more commonly seen on shots from volley, back spin creates a "pitched" style ball flight and stunts the roll of the ball as it lands (commonly used for passing). You might see both vertical types of spin on passes and shots , but back spin is more common on passes, and top sin on shots. Some good examples: Passes: Steven Gerrard - lots of great great top spin passes, Andre Pirlo - great back spin passes, Shots: Zinadine Zidane- back spin penalty goal , great example, Wayne Rooney - many top spin volleys scored, Gheorgi Hagi - could create top spin from the floor, the best dip and curve I have seen on freekicks, Juninho and Hagi the 2 best freekick takers I have ever seen, There is also another way to create ball movement and that is using no spin at all but causing the ball to deform in certain ways. The most famous way is the "Knuckle ball" which Cristiano Ronaldo does quite a lot, and other players (this creates curl and dip from the ground) This technique is about striking through the ball as true as possible but making contact with the ball with the knuckle of the big toe, causing deforimation at the point of impact, which causes the curve and dip , and sometimes it will change direction in the air. Knuckle ball is pretty much always used on shooting free kicks only. Cristiano Ronaldo and Juninho masters of this Lool that was pretty indepth
Similar to a curveball in baseball for these mericans.. I think spinning it sideways makes the air pass by faster on one side than the other and the result is the arc, however it can be helped or hurt by the wind too ofcause..
@@Validboy You've described the phenomenon precisely. Just for reference, It's called Magnus Effect, a consequence of the Bernoulli's equation in fluid dynamics.
Yes but they don't usually go outside the box, other than for last minute corners or fc's if they're losing or drawing, like the bicycle kick, but where Adrian ran out to score that was a testimonial, it was the same team playing against each otger
At the first goal Roberto Carlos kicked the ball with his left foot by giving it a contraclockwise spin..that´s why that ball had that kind of curve..he had to hit the ball with his instep exactly at the center in order to give the ball that power/velocity which it had but with a leg-movement from left to right in order to give the ball that contraclockwise spin..that´s how he had done it..and giving the ball spin with the instep is technical highest level. He also could have hit the ball with his outside of the foot (that´s how it is usually done) that would had made the same curve direction (even a way more extreme curve) but then the ball wouldn´t had been that fast..He probably would have done that when he wouldn´t had been that far away from the goal...when he would have played the ball with the inside of the foot the curve would have had an clockwise spin curving in the opposite direction...but for kicking the ball in the right corner of the goal while kicking the ball with the iside of the foot he would had to let the ball passing the human wall at the left side instead of the right side. For the right foot that all happens vice versa = hit the ball with the inside of the foot = contraclockwise spin = ball is curving to the left/outside of the foot = clockwise spin = ball curving to the right....straight shots are done with the instep hitting the ball at the center.

The goalkeeper in the 3rd clip is René Higuita from Colombia, NOT Columbia, Colombia, people call/called him "El loco Higuita" (The crazy Higuita) and if I'm not mistaken, that was indeed a friendly matc against England, but he used to do cary stuff even in important games, even in the World Cup
Spin, like in pool or snooker. Teams often have an informal agreement that their goalie is going to get to score a goal two or three times in a season. So they'll arrange a play whereby he comes out from their goal to go for it. And of course if games have to be decided by penalty, goalies can also volunteer for a penalty kick.
British Kids went through a period of calling it both football and soccer in the 1980s when Pele and other overseas stars joined New York Cosmos and American style sports language emigrated to Britain...
Indeed but play had been stopped further up the pitch so it was never classed as a save... it was just before the days where you'd get booked for kicking the ball away
The scorpion kick was in a friendly in 1995. That keeper was good friends with Escobar in Colombia and I think has been in jail for extortion amongst other things. A full on butter. Rene Higuita
The goalie who scored was at a testimonial match. At these matches it is usually a fun game for someone who has served a LOT of time at a certain club or is maybe retiring. These games contain current and ex players of the club and are for the long serving player and the fans. This particular game, not sure who it was for but is definitely my team West Ham Utd!!! East London's finest....even though I am from North West England
I remember watching the 04:00 Zlatan goal live on TV and thinking "surely not" after the keeper hit it out. He did, it went in, probably his best ever goal.
U asked in of the Ultras videos who is Zlatan, bcoz they chanted that his nose is off-side (indeed it is). 3:48 - This is Zlatan, a legend. Extremly talented, bold, rude and the ultimate troll for his team mates and enemies (there Zlatan Ibrahimowic compilations how he trolls other players, refs and fans hahah). In short: Zlatan is the biggest (boldest) football personality that ever existed.

Love Ronaldinho’s skill. I so miss playing football. I remember once when I was the only female on the pitch and one of the other guys kept asking if I would cry if I was tackled or if I fell. When I scored the first goal in under a minute these taunts changed to “mark the girl, mark the girl” 😂
When I was school. I was in the football team. And, that Matt LeTissier goal I once copied to win us the championship. I was about 13 at the time. From then on, as my name is Lee, I was affectionately called 'Lee Tissier'... I took all free kicks and penalty kicks. Much later in life I was at a charity event. We had world class England goal keeper in the goal. And I think you paid £5 for 3 penalty kicks against him. If you scored a goal you got a prize of some description. I scored everyone of my kicks. I got approached by a football scout asking if I played for any club. I told him to fook off. I was a bit drunk and thought it was a joke. Turns out he was a scout for Manchester City. I could have had a shot at being a footballer . hahaha. Oh life is cruel... lol
Rene Higuita was a showboat keeper, I also remember he fucked up showboating against Cameroon in the 1990 World Cup, when Roger Milla took the ball from him and scored. Funny as fuck.
LOL, 2:12 is Rene Higuita. Columbia goalkeeper who was mates with Pablo Escobar. Also, the video yous watched was a bit shit tbh, some strange clips in there. Much better football highlights around.

Also 7:45 Goalkeeper sometimes do that, when it is a very important game, and they absolutely have to score a goal, if not they are out of the tournament or whatever. Then when they get a corner in the last seconds of the game, they just run infront of goal to help to score, because if they score they are safe, and if they lose the ball it doesnt matter anyway because they just lose, because they did not score a goal
You guys should wait until the result tomorrow in the England game and then react to its coming home live with Frank skinner in preparation for the final 😉
Curving the ball is one of the skills we learn as children, you learn to kick the ball with the inside or the outside of the foot which imparts spin to the ball
Renée Higuita's scorpion kick is perhaps the most legendary "save" of all time. And yeah, it wasn't a really important game, it was a friendly between England and Colombia, plus the referee had already stopped the game. Not sure if Higuita actually was aware of the referee's decision. And ... You said if it's an important game, you don't fuck around ... Lol, you surely don't know anything about Higuita, the man was crazy and famous for his antics. Costed Colombia a vital goal in 1990's round of 16 match against Cameroon. Higuita thoyght he could mess around and dribble attackers, lost the ball to Roger Milla and bam, Colombia out of the world cup. Dude is still loved in South America !
10:51 shouldnt count cuz you have to do the penalty in one flow, ur not allowed to stop your motion after u started moving. the goalies go to the front f.e. if its last attack of the match and you are losing anyway, so this lets your goal open, which doesnt change much. u lose anyways if u dont score now, so the goalies( which are all tall af) are an extra large person in the front. common tactic. but a goalie walking through the whole field is reaaaaally rare

It's actually really difficult to kick a football without it curving because your foot usually comes at the ball on an angle which will inevitably cause it to spin in the air. The trick is getting it to spin how you want it to, and as much as you want it to.
All the types of spin/curve/dip:

First goal, is what was called (back in my day), a 'Banana' shot, where you bend it around the wall of men. If you kick the ball just to the right of the centre, it will bend to the left, or to bend it right, kick it just left of the centre.
i remember as a 10 years old kid trying to imitate roberto carlos' free kick, all the children in my school tried it, i hated when argentina faced that brazil, but even then it was a pleasure to see that southamerican derby.
First goal, Roberto Carlos, Brazilian legend!!
Still the best goal i've ever seen
Shame this goal was in le tournoi warm up before France 98, if it was in an actual world Cup game against France would be talked about even more than it already is
@@yiepie for sure, pal
The scorpion kick was an international, 2 good teams but he didn’t realise the game was still in play. Crazy
Wasn't it in a world cup game?
Nice one lads, there are countless football moments to see, especially if you go back in time ! I wouldn't even know where to start !! Most of the ones you saw here were contemporary really, some a little while back. I was at the game where the Colombian goalkeeper did the back flip thing, it goes down as one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in an international match ! Yes it was a friendly against England, if I remember he spent a lot of time dribbling the ball around too ! a real character ! Great to see that again ! Keep up the good work !!!!
That Roberto Carlos free kick at the World Cup (98?) shocked the world, he got so mush swerve on it, it was literally heading miles past the post and just bends perfectly into the net.
It wasn't the World Cup it was a tournament the year prior called LeTournoi which only had 4 teams in it.
Don't worry about calling it Soccer, it doesn't bother most British people.....it's your language.....calling it Soccer is fine. Great vids guys.....we appreciate you taking time me to learn about our National game. I was same learning American football......have a new appreciation for it......love watching the highly we get on Sun.nights, even though it's on at about 12.:30 at night!
Subbed, two really down to earth guys. Lee from UK.
2:15 that is Higuita, legendary Colombian goalkeeper, and it was a World Cup game! 😂😂
the goal keeper save with the back of his feet is called the scorpion save and was england vs colubia
Indeed but play had been stopped further up the pitch so it was never classed as a save... it was just before the days where you'd get booked for kicking the ball away
Heguita or something is his name
Rene Higuita was the Colombian goalkeeper doing the scorpion kick
Against England, it was the ultimate flip the bird moment. Loved it.
The goalkeeper kicking the ball Scorpion kick style was actually in a World Cup Match Colombia vs England
I feel as if there was an offside or something, so he knew Columbia had a free kick and it wouldn’t be a goal if it went in
@A A Correct
The scorpion kick was in a friendly in 1995. That keeper was good friends with Escobar in Colombia and I think has been in jail for extortion amongst other things. A full on butter. Rene Higuita
*nutter
8:35. How about it would be like the goal keeper in hockey running all the way
The goalie who scored was at a testimonial match.
Mark Noble’s testimonial…
I remember watching the 04:00 Zlatan goal live on TV and thinking "surely not" after the keeper hit it out. He did, it went in, probably his best ever goal.
2:50
Best thing is: This dude has pulled it off several times in his career, including important national games.
You need to watch a video of Ronaldinho. What a player he was! His level of skill was unreal at times
Best goalie goal ever.....even for a charity match!
Italy-Spain in 30 mins and England-Denmark same time tomorrow.
Loving these football reactions, keep them up! Definitely check out a Ronaldinho compilation that guy is insane!
Hopefully you can react to the best last minute goals in football the reaction from the fans is great
It's a funny one. In the US you have your sports unique to you that no one else plays really. And yet football is the worlds number one sport in the US it's only in recent years got more popular
Jose Chilavert used to score goals a lot and he was a goalie, free kicks and penalties, but he did manage a free kick goal from his own half once LOOL
Brazil 1982- gratest team ever(video).
It was art football. Beautiful game.
4:03 best goal ever imo, that move is so sick
that artisitc save was in the world cup in the states. he was such a crazy goalie
2.30 i think that was a world cup game.
Thats why i love football.. anything can happen
Watch the first one again and keep an eye on the ball boy a few feet to the side of the goal. He thinks it's going to hit him and ducks! 😆😆😆
Regarding the Roberto Carlos free kick, I believe he’s said before that the wind did help the ball curve more.
Rumour had it that he placed the ball with the valve in the right spot to get that curve with a fast ball.
You guys should react to Most Angriest football fans, its hilarious 🤣🤣.. 🔥
LOL, 2:12 is Rene Higuita. Columbia goalkeeper who was mates with Pablo Escobar.
Also, the video yous watched was a bit shit tbh, some strange clips in there. Much better football highlights around.
There's a very old clip of Pat Jennings as the goalkeeper of Manchester United kicking the ball out from his goal area, it bounces over the opposing keeper and goes straight into the net.
When the Goalie kicked the ball away like a Scorpion, it was in a World Cup match.
dudes i love you both so much, i love watching two dudes from the US admitting that so called soccer is the best of all. i know you dont have to say it, i can see it in your honest reactions and i am thankful for that. man i love our football and in the past i was into american football because everything from the US is the greatest and the .... whatever. i have learned that this is so far from true and you both helped a lot with bringing the truth to the people so they can see the true greatness of sport. Football, Soccer, Fussball, call it what ever you want but there will never be anything close to the beauty of the real Football and their Fans. i thank you so much for showing the dudes over seas in the US how beautiful live can be. i am so disgusted to hear on the other hand that everything is about money and nothing else. i cant believe you guys are supporting a system like that. it makes my vomit !!! but thats what you end up with if you give the power to the wrong people who only can think about profit
Some of these goals give me goosebumps
Damon Albarn was there, about the champions league final
In the vid clip, where Ronaldinho is playing by himself and kicking the ball towards the goal, did you notice that the ball came back? he was hitting the crossbar intentionaly to get the return!
Kick across the ball to spin it will generate bend on the ball,
Aerodynamics,
Similar to QB puttin spiral on ball when he throws it,
Go Pats👍
That became known as the "Scorpion kick". Rene Higuita of Colombia v England at Wembley in a friendly.
Have a look at haysel a requirim for a world cup.
As far as I can remember there has been about 10 goalkeepers who have actually scored a goal, Becker who played for Liverpool as one, and Peter Schmeichel was the other, the others I can not remember their names but the other two I mentioned I have seen.
there been alot more than 10 keeper who have scored. in fact chilavert actual took freekicks and scored 62 goals for club and country. not bad for a goalkeepr
Would be fun to see you guys compare festival end shows. EDC or Ultra Miami compared with Defqon 1 Sunday endshow
You got to watch all of Ronaldinho clips
7:22 Do you actually not know that match? Its definitely like Top 3 Story in Football in the last Century.
Ball awareness who knew how important it was 😂😂⚽⚽
You guys should wait until the result tomorrow in the England game and then react to its coming home live with Frank skinner in preparation for the final 😉
When you are off the ground when you hit it you know its good
You guys should watch England’s greatest football songs
Hahahaha 😅😂 I like how people watching for the first time react 🤣.
Curving the ball is one of the skills we learn as children, you learn to kick the ball with the inside or the outside of the foot which imparts spin to the ball
This is true, I believe it is called the Magnus effect, although I could be wrong on that
Don’t worry for the goalkeeper of the video’s first goal. One year later, he was world champion against the same player.
Ah yes the scorpion dive save lol
The Dirk Nowitzki freekick was die in a Charity match artet he made a dive. By the way the referee was Dirk Nowitzki's brother
10:51 shouldnt count cuz you have to do the penalty in one flow, ur not allowed to stop your motion after u started moving. the goalies go to the front f.e. if its last attack of the match and you are losing anyway, so this lets your goal open, which doesnt change much. u lose anyways if u dont score now, so the goalies( which are all tall af) are an extra large person in the front. common tactic. but a goalie walking through the whole field is reaaaaally rare
when the goalkeeper attacks it's better to compare it to cover 1 safety blitz you get a sack or a TD against
The ball " Arced " because carlos put right hand side on it , we used to call this skill the banana shot when i was a boy.
