The US Marine Corps operates air assets (F/A-18, F-35B , AV-8B, UH-1Y, AH-1Z, MV-22B) to support its ground forces during combat operations. These aircraft perform close air support, air assault force insertion/extraction, search and rescue. The USAF primarily supports ground forces of the US Army. This goes back to USAAF being part of the Army and then the establishment of independent service in 1947. The Marine Corps is part of the department of the Navy
