Manamadurai Pottery cooperative society
Manamadurai pottery is renowned for its exceptional quality and was
awarded a GI tag on March 31, 2023.
Manamadurai, situated between Madurai and Ramanathapuram, is part of
the Sivagangai district in Tamil Nadu.
This traditional craft has been passed down through generations.
Over 300 artisans are engaged in pottery making in Manamadurai.
These artisans are part of a society supported by the Tamil Nadu Khadi
and Village Industries Board.
The unique style and craftsmanship of Manamadurai pottery are
acclaimed worldwide.
The clay used for pottery is enriched by the Vaigai River, which flows
through the Sivagangai district.
The creation of this pottery involves the five elements: earth, water,
fire, air, and space, known as the "pancha bhoothas."
To enhance the quality of the clay, a certain quantity of sand is mixed in.
The clay for casting pots is prepared early in the morning, around 6:30-7:00 AM.
To make the pottery strong, various materials such as lead, graphite,
calcium lime, ash, sodium silicate, manganese, iron, and plasticizers
are added to the mix.
The clay is then mixed in a machine, and the shaping of the clay is
also assisted by machinery.
The skilled hands of the artisans give the pottery its shape and
grooves, working in perfect harmony to create flawless pieces.
The finished products are dried in the shade before natural colours are applied.
After colouring, the pottery is baked using wood and special coverings
to prepare it for sale.

വിസ്മയകരമായ കലാവിരുതാണ്.. ഇപ്പോൾ ജനങ്ങൾ മൺപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ മേന്മ മനസിലാക്കിത്തുടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു.. ഇതിന് പിന്നിലെ കഠിനാധ്വാനവും സമയവും ഏറെ വിലപ്പെട്ടതാണ്.. പൊങ്കാല മഹോത്സവങ്ങൾ ഇവരുടെ സാമ്പത്തിക പരാധീനത ഒരു പരിധി വരെ പരിഹരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു..
