    Thanks for covering the show in detail. I couldn’t make it this year, but you got around most of what I wanted to see. I wanted to ask all of the exhibitors selling metal machines if they could 3d print plastic injection moulds.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The answer would probably be yes, if with some surface finishing. Machines like that from Sodick (which 3D prints in metal, then offers CNC milling) may be best for this purpose.

      I am an old guy but here are some pearls of wisdom on your thoughts. Look at the vid again and concider 3DP-Platform. They have a model "3DP-Platform #400 that has a workbed 58" on "X"axis x 39"wide on "Y"axis x 27&3/4"hieght on "Z"axis. I am assuming your still young enough to get on a life choise plan. First look at "SolidProfessor"(Solidworks teaching tutorial) they give out free a few lessons to give you exposesure to Solidworks 3D design. You can put your designs into files that can be loaded in that 3DP400 . Picture this: print plastic cores of body or frame components(even if they are longer than your printers workbed) that are light&ridiged. Read a book on wood joinery. Then you can give up 3" of of two printings in a sandwich/finger joints, and even though a Mustangs quarter panel might be longer than one printing by itself. By designing in mating holes in the corners of your printing by using Solidworks, you can bond two printings with Lamello Invis (invisable detachable joining) store.swissinvis.com/ . Even in putting two printings that have multiple curved surface geometry these connectors(8mm.,12mm.,and 30mm.) will pull all of your body panel core together at 260kgs. of pull(12mm. 9/16ths"). Once you have your body panel then use carbon fiber(colored or not) to wrap with epoxy for finished products. Note some eight graders have achieved CSWP or CSWA licences where taught in some school systems. Certified SolidWorks Professionals(3.2 million world wide). Next step is learning "rendering" softwares to show your customers various near life-like views of their finished autos. I just gave you a view of your family's sucess if you get curious enough to search the web. The Lamello Invis is a little(probably no one knows) trade secrate.

      You could. And using a 3D printing bureau service -- such as i.materialise -- you could do so in a range of materials, including metals! Nice things to print pens -- potentially intricate, but small, so not too expensive to print.

  • @Ponk_80
    @Ponk_80 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    why don't they make an extrusion plane, instead of just a tiny nozzle, a flexible plane that by flexing opens up holes, where the plastic materials can me extruded simultaneously, controlled by a computer that sends the 3D slice data to the sheet, and that way prints faster. Just an idea.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A very neat idea. This happens in resin-based printers. It also happens in so-termed DOD "drop on demand" extrusion models, that kind of spray hot plastic.

    You changed the intro again!

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The intro has not changed (well, it was tweaked very slightly back in July 2017). There are lots of 3D printers for $50K or less. You could, for example, get a couple of the large 3D Platform models for that, one of the non-colour Polyjet printers, and just about a Desktop Metal system.

  • @skyhacker6
    @skyhacker6 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Metal parts are not really usable straight out of the printer because the material they are made of is very porous and needs several treatment to be able to use them as real metal parts !

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is simply not true. DMLS, electron beam melting and laser cusing are now being used to manufacture aerospace, medical and other final parts with minimal finishing required (and no post processing). Certainly there are additive manufacturing processes that produce relatively porous metal parts (like those from ExOne and Desktop Metal). But don't judge an industry by one technology alone (something I see happen repeatedly in 3D printing). GE did not invest $1.4bn in direct metal 3D printing to make parts that do not at least meet the properties of those made by casting or machining. :)
