- The original Sardaukar chant track is written by Hans Zimmer and Michael Geiger, whose vocals you hear in the Dune soudtrack. Shout-outs to you for such a great work!
Hello, guys, my name is Dmitry Tarakanov. I'm a violin maker and throat singer from Moscow, Russia. When I saw the Sardaukar chant scene in Dune, I knew I was going to make a cover of it. Hans Zimmer is using absolutely brilliantly the bagpipes and throat singing in the Dune soundtrack, completely out of cultural context to create a really original and otherworldly sound. If you listen attentively, you can hear that the original track of throat singing is chopped, mixed from several pieces. So probably it can be called more of a piece of sound art. My intention was to create the same track, preserving the original sometimes chopped rhythm, but with a natural voice with minimum effects.
On this channel I will post more really cool throat singing stuff soon, please like and subscribe if you are interested.

"We are the Sardaukar. The Emperor's blades.
Those who stand against us fall."
Just so. Three battalions, as agreed.
Except against Fremen.
@@juanguerrero9128 They cheated.
In the book , just 3 fremen can kill 20 sardaukar easly
@@juanguerrero9128 Except they couldnt beat even the Harkonnens as stated in the movie. It was Paul and his tactics that turned the tide.
I love the different interpretations this chant is spawning
Sure thing, me too. Let a hundred flowers blossom.
I've always found throat singing terrifying. Like, it sounds inhuman. But it's also really cool. And you KILLED that my dude!
Thank you very much. Yeah, that's exactly why I've fallen in love with this piece, throat singing is eerie and inhuman enough by itself. But then it's a constructed alien language, and then it's this weird rhythm. Ohh, so good, had to make this cover.
@@kanvaux I saw a sardaukar clip with the Actual guy who did the chant. He was talking about how Hans zimmer and him talked about how this piece was supposed to go. I'm not sure of what exactly is being said but I'd say you nailed it.
Inhuman and something like primal creation / destruction song. When done well gives your goosebumps gooebumps.
I am both amused, confused and terrified
That's real talent right there
Thank you very much, glad to hear, that my creation can get such emotions from the human being, it's inspiring.
You have me convinced. Your are the Emperor's blades
Thank you, sir, da best compliment.
Finally someone who listens to the original work and literally COVERS it. Your work is outstanding. Very difficult, yet you managed to come out of it nicely. Great job! NA'A SADUKAR... KIUU'NKA BAADE. SAKUZ'AKINSTA... FA'ADE!
Hell yeah, thank you, my friend, your comment feels me with joy.
Great interpretation with the sacred ambience it deserves. Looks like the start of an ancient tribal, druid guided spiritual experience.
"Dreams are messages from the deep..." I'll never forget feeling that first line in my chest at the beginning, even before the corp titles.
So alien, eerie, majestic and powerful way to kickstart an audiovisual masterpiece. We all knew we were in for a ride.
Thank you, Bruno, I've felt just the same!
Agreed.
Best attempt at that I’ve seen by far!!! You actually managed to get the phonetics nearly spot on! One slight improvement could be the use of more guttural stops especially at the “gingir” sounding part, but on the whole that’s an outstanding effort!
Thank you very much for your comment!
I heard Zimmer used compression to really punch up those stops.
@@GetOutsideYourself that would make sense. I do think it is possible to get the stops naturally if you seal off your nose and mouth with the skin at the back of your throat then suddenly let in air through your nose without using your diaphragm and instead using the static pressure difference to make a kinda click sound. It’s hard to explain via words however I managed to do it with my normal vocal tone very well however you have to have some serious control over your throat singing to get the deep tone instantly back after you have done this. I haven’t been able to get it perfect but I’m getting there.
@@GetOutsideYourself yeah in the behind the scenes video he mentioned that he chopped it up somewhat and then compressed it so you'd have to do that manually

Considering that they edited together the sounds Michael provided its quite amazing it can actually be sung. Hans Zimmer and his team sure are good at what they do. =)
A whole fandom for a 0:30 scene. I love it.
Yeah. Though, if you take the length of the throat singing scene, it's 65 seconds. Sorry, fans are scrupulous.

that gives me the chills
I like it! :D Really good interpretation! One thing that would imo add a lot to it, would be making the consonants feel more 'punchy'. I love the extra effort to give it some dark, atmospheric scenery ❤

this is so dope

Nice idea, bro. Though, during drone throat singing, I guess, everybody will fall in half sleep.
when i watched the scene at the cinema i felt so bad and very ill... this chant made me very sick and feeling something horrible will happen to me....

Fucking nailed it
Hell yeah, thanks!
I absolutely love this! You've inspired me to give throat singing a try!
My question is, how are you sliding the tone down after a phrase? Are you dropping your larynx, or is it a vocal tone?
Thank you! Well, good question. More relaxation, and making your throat wider I guess. With the singing on the false cords you make the tonal adjustments by squeezing or relaxing your larynx muscles and by adjusting the amount of air that you are pushing through.
Sound good. Video too vanilla
AND a lightning storm in a distance? 5/5 cover

Okay. Pretty good! Original track by Hans Zimmer and...?
Thank you. Well, and team, I guess, I don't know, what do you mean?
@@kanvaux co-written by Hans Zimmer and Michael Geiger. ;)
@@michaelgeiger4043 wow, thank you very much for reaching me out, it's an honor. I've tried to search for as much information on the Sardaukar chant as I could, I've read every article and watched every interview about the sound of Dune. I wanted to know who's voice is that, was pretty sure, that they've recorded some tibetan monk. Now, knowing your name, I've found all the info. Thank you so much one more time, I'm not sure if I can change the end credits, I'm really sorry for that. But I'll write about you in the description and in the title of the video. I would love to listen to more of your works and to know more details about the Sardaukar chant. I think, it's really an avantgarde, and great piece of work.
@@michaelgeiger4043 and also the moment in the movie, where Lady Jessica receives the crysknife from the servant and the music is drone throat singing with arabic harmonies above, aw it's so good. That's something that I've been wanting to do all the time. Listening to the soundtrack in the cinema was a pure pleasure to me. And plenty of throat singing was a special treat. My deepest bows and thank you one more time.
yo its the man himself
Cool but the Sardaukar chant in Dune is a recorded sound but it is worked on. The sound is acculay so heavly edited that anyone can sound like that after the same edit
I think its even darker than original.Cool

@@kanvaux are there actuall vocals or are there only noises?
@@schattenseele66 sorry, do you mean in the original track? Or by 'vocals' you mean actual lyrics?
@@kanvaux yes lyrics i mean!
@@schattenseele66 yeah, there were actual words (sardaukar language kind of), improvised by Michael Geiger and then Zimmer's team mixed the chant from it with some editing.
Don't forget to credit David J. Peterson, who created the language/lyrics!
Good point, thanks for bringing that up! But not quite. While David J. Peterson really did work at languages for Dune, the Sardaukar chant is fully improvised by Michael Geiger and mixed by Hans Zimmer and his team.
@@kanvaux Ahhhh that makes sense! The chant is vastly different from the script version. I assumed it was just rewritten by Peterson or Villeneuve in a later draft. Have you seen the Sardaukar language notes? They're really cool. I've tried speaking it myself and I always choke on my spit.

I sound exactly like that after I eat spicy food. All this time I thought it was acid and gas build up, not a talent for singing. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
nice voice pitch but you could at least try to imitate lyrics
No!
The nonsense words aren't much, it's the setting and the way the start and end of each sound are cut away to make it seem non-human and stentorian. Zimmer has worked hard to use sound to create atmosphere, something terribly lacking in modern cinema.
I’ve heard better dubbing on old Chinese Kung Fu movies.
Haha, a good one.
