  • we are growing several varieties of thornless blackberries in USDA growing zone 9B in the Arizona desert! Here in this video we describe how we successfully have been growing these berries for many years on our property just outside of Phoenix Arizona.
    Blackberries can grow in containers or in the ground, and they prefer well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Here are some tips for growing blackberries in containers:
    Use a potting mix
    Use a mix with some added compost, and use larger particles in larger pots. Don't use soil from your garden.
    Water
    Add soil in layers so it settles evenly at the base, and water the container.
    Increase the size
    Canes grow larger in larger containers, but you should gradually increase the size over several years.
    Protect from winter weather
    If you have harsh winter weather, you can insulate the plant or move the container to a garage or basement. Keep containers inside until the last frost has passed, and keep the soil moist but not soaked.
    Here are some general tips for growing blackberries:
    Plant in fall or winter
    Space plants 3-4 feet apart
    Mulch with pine straw or shredded pine bark
    Prune old canes after fruiting
    Clear the site of weeds before planting
    Blackberries can tolerate some afternoon shade
    Blackberries can grow in most soil types, but you can take a soil sample to determine the current pH, phosphorous (P), and potassium (K) conditions. You can use agricultural limestone to raise the pH or soil sulfur to lower it.

    I love what you did with the clay pots! I must try that with all my empties. My Prime Ark Freedom did great this past month.

      Yeah I'm done with clay pots, they just can't handle our hot, dry, and windy summers. Which is the most important time of the year to keep things hydrated.. 🔥😎

    your collection is inspiring! I'm in zone 8a. Just picked up a big triple crown with blooms and tiny baby prime ark freedoms. I realize mulch with be my friend in the high desert. I don't have compost yet, but I do have peat to mix in. Do you think a little sulphur is ok to bring down the PH?

    • @AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
      @AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Both Primark freedom and Triple crown blackberries are some of the best varieties out there! Congrats on finding those treasures! They have a fibrous root system so they don't like to be dry for too long. If you have a soil meter that can check pH do it first before you add any other supplements to increase or lower your ph. Most blackberry varieties like a pH of around 6.0

      I didn't realize how potent granular sulfur is, less was better in our case.. next time if we use sulfur we will definitely be careful, lesson learned!

    • @AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
      @AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Pete is great, it holds a lot of moisture and it also is a little bit lower in ph, usually around 6.0. we use 50% native soil and 50% peat mix for all of our pots. And then any kind of mulch, leaves, broken up sticks, what have you will work as a mulch.

    I have my thornless Prime Ark blackberries growing in 15 gallon pots. I water mine twice a day for 6 minutes each time. I think they’d be dead if I didn’t.
    Won’t your in ground blackberries be invasive? I may decide to put some in ground next year but wondering if I should use bamboo barrier to keep them contained. Blackberries are all new to me.

      Do you use mulch on top of soil in your 15 gallon pots?

      At this point, our blackberries are doing good so far. They only grow where there is water, and we have them all on drip line. We haven't had them spread very far yet, I know it sounds silly but I hope they do become everywhere! LOL

    Appreciate your videos and knowledge share! I just picked up a Triple Crown from one of the big box stores and brought it home only to have it get really crispy and curl on me! I had originally thought I could place it on my patio by my hot tub, but maybe it got too hot there? Will it bounce back? I have since repotted into a larger container and placed in a grass/dirt area. I have about 2-3 inches of mulch at the top. Any tips and advice would be much appreciated. The plant has lots of berries and I was hoping to have a harvest! Thanks!

      If you are growing here in the Phoenix area and it looks really bad. I would bring the pot on the Northside of your home and keep it out of the sun.

      Your BlackBerry plant is now in recovery mode and needs to be out of the sun for the rest of the growing season. It will get plenty of reflective atmospheric sunlight. When it starts to show signs of recovery with new canes and or lateral growth then you can reintroduce it back to the morning sun only.

      @@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard I think it just got too hot from reflected heat from the hot tub and patio bricks. It was still in the 'black' pot from the store. I have moved it more into shade and was thinking about repotting with the pot in pot method. I think I saw that on your channel? I had a similar problem with the dwarf peach tree we brought home the same day. So I am hoping that this will help revitalize it for the summer. Is it too late to put the blackberry into the ground? That was a consideration also.

      @EdnaSmith that's a great idea, yeah we just sent out a video explaining that the terracotta pots are hard to keep the roots happy, they wick and dry out the dirt so much faster than the plastic pots. And the mulch as an insulation layer to keep the roots from cooking!

    I already had a 130 ft long wild patch bordering the west side of my yard when I moved here in 2022. There appears to be at least 5 types...all different in size, taste, and sweetness. The worst tasting, oddly enough, are the most vigorous and I battle their attempts to spread and take over each year. I wish I could stop them before they smother the rest. They`re tiny and bitter unless extremely ripe and even then they`re not great and very hard to pick. New canes grow way up into the air and hide the berries below. I need to chop them down but how? They`re 15 feet high right now and growing up up up.

      Where are you growing? I've seen professionals mow them over with a high performance weed Wacker with a metal blade. When they are still dormant early spring. I believe they were in the Pacific Northwest.

    I planted my first Prime Ark blackberries in 15 gallon pots and water 6 minutes twice each day, full sun. Just the pots are shaded. I think they’d die if I didn’t water every day.

      I actually have my blackberries in 20 gallon pots. The pots are behind a stone ledge so they stay shaded but the plants themselves are in full sun. My potting medium is 6 parts Peat Moss, 1.5 parts Perlite, and 1 part Sand. Mulch on top. [Enlightenment Garden] Already produced berries this past Spring.
      This will be their first full summer. So I’ve been watering short bursts but daily and frequently. Currently, both pots are getting 6 minutes twice a day and so far look very healthy. That’s how I am watering everything, short but frequent throughout each day. This will be my first full summer trying out this method of watering. Gary’s Best Gardening & Enlightenment Garden have some TH-cam videos talking about this technique.
      Will adjust length of time and frequency as needed since everyone’s drip lines are different. This coming winter I plan to change out some drip heads as needed but will save that digging for cooler temps.
      My pots are in plastic but they’re never in the sun.
      But for this method to work you also need well draining soil.

    • @AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
      @AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a great potting mixture, we've been using Gary's concept mixture this year as well and see awesome results, we use the expensive mix-4-mix at home depot, I'm starting to see it at Lowe's as well. And then we use our Sandy native soil, with Mulch on top as well! We haven't seen much production but definitely a lot of rapid growth. I can only imagine how the roots are feeling inside LOL

      We use half gallon an hour drip emitters and water every third day. I stick my finger in the soil underneath the mulch layer constantly throughout the week and it always seems moist which is a good thing, fibrous Roots don't like to dry out.
