This video could be seen as a spiritual follow up to the Black Escapism video. It covers a lot of the blowback The Boondocks received for daring to attempt a direct commentary on race relations and how many shows prior to it helped pave the way for its existence.
It serves as a reminder of where the show/strip came from, and a question regarding whether our policing of black media by black voices necessarily helps facilitate the prospect of anything surpassing it.
    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    SECRET MESSAGE:
► We should allow black voices to speak whatever reality is their own, because we have no idea what will stick and no idea will ultimately has us push things forward in terms of entertainment media.

Bet they'd find Living Single "pandering".
I don't hate whites but the sheer ignorance I hear from them while hearing their apologetics on America that minorities shouldn't have passion projects about themselves for themselves in their perspective of America as minorities to the mainstream audience; because it doesn't involve the mainstream audience, is tiring to say the least.
"Not everything is about you", white folks.
I know whites who make ignorant comments yet claim they're "down", who pander to me but, never show any sign of humility or curiousity for to tell us to our own stories.
Or ones who pair us up with other black people like just because we're black that we're automatically compatible.
Its always some "allow me to explain for you why your take on racism", kind of pandering.
So, ironically whites pander all the time. They just do it for their own people.
They're just projecting that whenever someone else seems to do it.

It's interesting to be old enough to remember watching and reading Boondocks as an adult. I remember the Jar Jar jokes (and also the shade folks threw at Aaron for working on RedTails)
But now it seems almost tame instead of radical

    • @TheStorytellerAJ
      @TheStorytellerAJ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +122

      Didn't Red Tails flop?
Anywho, The Boondocks isn't as progressive as it once was, but I think it comparatively was for the time period. It's just... looking back, I think it fell victim to ""some"" of the problems with comedy/satire in that time period. I forget the interview, but Aaron pretty much gave up on radicalism out of nihilism around late S2-3, and it's reflected in the whole Huey retirement arc of Season 3.
In some ways, I think it makes Boondocks interesting to study. It's essentially the story of a radical giving way to nihilism and giving up on trying to change the world around him. In that sense, I think there's a lot of value to be extracted from the series as a whole on an intertextual level.

Rodney Barnes seemed to jokingly attribute some of it to him finally making it "big" in Hollywood, but I think naturally over time the older generation slowly just grows nihilistic to the whole prospect of any real change happening, because they begin perceive life's happenings as an endless loop as opposed to a upward spiral of sorts.
I imagine he has a lot of regrets, but I think fondly of his blunt honesty back in the late 90s to early 00s. It inspired me to think in ways that he probably has no idea about. It's like what Kendrick said about how once you turn 25, you kind of just start to lose your passion for that stuff. For a guy who was in their early 30s, I commend Aaron's dedication. He gave black kids a progressive "superhero" to project and aspire to be like in Huey. A radical alter ego. Healthy or not, that part of his legacy is something nobody will ever be able to take away from him.

For the first time, many of them were confronted with the pain and reality of addiction. I am sure some people were horrified that Pryor did this; others were transfixed by his amazing talent. Entertainment is supposed to make us forget these realities exist. Satire puts reality in a context that entertains by making us think.

the whole point of the show was to SHOW how we as a people perpetuate a lot of the stereotypes our race has been loaded with. It pokes fun at in a way that is lowkey hilarious but depressing at the same time because it was meant to open EYES. I don't think people that are not black will GET some of the intricacies or the points he was trying to prove. I also don't think this show was meant to be for EVERYBODY tbh. He tackled a lot of subjects that the black community struggles to seriously address in a way that we could digest it and not feel "offended". A lot of the subjects were spot on. EVERY episode had a message in it (at least in the first 2 seasons). He showed the many different types of black people that are in our communities. In reference to the women he showed and the light he decided to show them in was the perfect examples of stereotypes that black women are often put in BUT it also opened eyes to the problem we have in the black community with some women. I've met women like that in the black community, its real lol. The only woman that was truly respected was granddads wife who passed. They made it seem like it was hard for granddad to find TRUE love again in the times that we live in. Yall act like the men weren't held in the same regard hence the show wasn't supposed to make you feel COMFORTABLE ( gangstalicious, thugnificent, Tom, Uncle Ruckus, Grandad, Hewey, Riley, they all represented real types of personalities in our culture). It was meant to make you THINK and step outside your own bubble and look at what's happening around you in our communities. The chicken shit HAPPENED. The gay rappers in the music industry HAPPENED. The way rappers dress like women HAPPENED. The eating bad food from slavery shit is ACCURATE. If all the things he tackled in the show were lies then it would've been a whole different subject. This show was not meant to be understood by everybody that's the thing I don't think people get lol. As a black man, the show touched me in a way that no show EVER has cause it was unapologetic and honestly made me see the errors in how I viewed certain things in life and as a black man. Seeing certain stereotypes play out in front of you although it may be hilarious, it changes your perspective. The "nigga moment" episode is a prime example of that. WE DO THAT SHIT to a certain extent. It made me approach interacting with my fellow black people different and be AWARE of certain things when they start to play out. The best truth is raw and unfiltered and I think he did a great job showcasing subjects that we as a community refuse to address. I also think that's why this show has a deep cult following. When the third and fourth season came out, things started to drastically change. It went from being what I fore mentioned to making FUN of religion, race, and people, but that was around the time that Aaron wasn't that much involved with the series anymore. If you dont know a lot about black culture of course some of the content would seem distasteful, but Aaron was truly ahead of his time with the comic strip and the show.

You can't spread the message without the fuel to do so, and the fuel in the US is money. So while I don't think the relationship between this kind of creator and his sponsors is a healthy one, I do think that we benifit overall by letting the message go further.
You could argue against this with 10 million merits, and I'd say you're correct. I just don't see an alternative that is as effective.

In human nature the projection of your self image is the result of your awareness to the influences you're exposed to and the relation it has with your concept of reality. I think one of the reasons why the boondocks gets so much mixed reviews is because of how it's not grounded material. You can base any perception you can think of on why you either hate or love it and it can still be classified as a possible reason for its purpose. The Boondocks very existence creates numerous ways to envision an outlook on art, culture, politics, and the reality of life being black regardless of whether you are black or not and whatever view you wish to see is entirely dependent on what the show itself says.

  • @R.E.E.D.

I think the main reason it was successful was because it was real.
Nobody I know watched the show thinking about the politics behind it. We didn't know, we didn't care. What we could recognize, were some of the truths it told in regards to our own culture.
Specifically, the outrageous parts of our own culture. It criticized the white man, but that was secondary to criticism of ourselves. And it was done in a light-hearted and entertaining way that made people more receptive to it.

Let it fuel discussion, but the idea that media must conform to what you believe is best for a whole group is wacky and arguably an impossible ideal.

Boondocks is a mirror into how we see ourselves and how our view of others minimizes their humanity. Mirrors reflect our good side as well as our flaws. Societal flaws need investigation to examine why we keep perpetuating them. We want to feel better than somebody, so caricatures and stereotypes fill that need. Hopefully, satire as a mirror can be a window to examine what feeds our insecurities so that we can escape lower-level thinking and evolve to more refined conscienciousness. #humane

I’m halfway through the video and something that kind of makes me uncomfortable is that Aaron seems to have largely given up on sharing his ideas, his politics.
(That being said there are obviously some questionable running threads in the show, as you mentioned in the video)
So when Boondocks comes around selling NFTs, merch, and video games it makes me wonder if what was once a critique of capitalism has now become a brand under it.
And in a way I kind of understand it, I’m pretty young so I don’t remember the early stages of the war on terror. Or how the entire United States was whipped into a patriotic fervor. But I can imagine it must have been extremely difficult to have been a leftist back then.
Though I can’t say I respect his decision, I can say I understand it.

I forget the interview, but it around when the show was coming out that he started to shy away from interviews. He did a lot of interviews back in the day cause' it was good press for his comic strip. Nowadays, he doesn't do them as much because the show had all this big advertising, and he started using the show as a vehicle to make his points.
I won't fault the man losing his interest in the limelight, but I'll openly be critical of the practices that I'm not down for like the use of NFTs and this hyper-commercialisation of The Boondocks that seems to be doing down as of late. I agree with your sentiment in that The Boondocks, what was once a scathing critique of capitalism, has become just another product consumed in profit margin discourse to be commercialised until it loses all its value.
Then there's the only discourse surrounding whether he just used radical politics as a means to an end for his come up, just to sell Boondocks out for big bucks later in life. There's all these complicated questions that we might never have answers to. At this point, all we can do is wait and look at the art for what it is...
      ...when it eventually comes out...
      ...someday...

your critique of stinkmeaner and the use of the n word gave me some validation over feeling uncomfortable over that episode...like, it's kinda funny, but in the end man, you're just creating more division between black people that we don't really need. and I honestly think this anti black women anti "nigga" undertone is what a lot of white people like about the show. it makes them feel like they can laugh at black women stereotypes and niggas without feeling bad about it... it furthers this narrative of "well some black people are okay, but those others are bad," and it's really stupid.

oh yeah, and coming from watching the kirby anime subbed (I'm a simp for it sorry lol, it's really good actually)...I really think that a lot of the reason anime gets away with being political is also because it's cute and often contains elements of fantasy. like, the plot of the kirby anime is literally about war, genocide, capitalism, feminism, authoritarianism, etc.... but most people would never notice, because it's actually fucking kirby lmao.

subjectively flawed tbh. this show wasnt supposed to tickle everyones fancy he just had a perspective and a way he wanted to say that it is what it is, political things dont have to appeal to everyone ever. political things not appealing immediately to certain groups is not a flaw of it. its real feelings exposed not masked pr moves for status quo and the cartoonish hyperbolism is actually accurate in some peoples life as you stated you cant encompass the entire black experience but the things depicted was emotionally the poetic cartoonish reality for mcgruder

Hello there! When I first heard of the Boondocks, I just thought it was this vulgar edgy show, like South Park but with black people, but after I saw your videos on this series, it really opened up my eyes. I had no idea how intelligent, deep, and profound the show is, and your videos also really showed me about black issues and culture that I was practically blind to. I'm really happy that there's a show out there that black people can really relate to in such a special and unique way. Your videos made me realize how important the boondocks is for everyone, especially black people.
And similar to the boondocks, I really like how many of your videos talk from a very unique perspective that doesn't really exist in the cartoon and anime community (at least in video form I mean) and I'm happy that you're able to share it to the world!
I got into your channel through things like Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick, but I stayed for your insightful words and analyses of black cartoons and characters. Keep up the fantastic work, and I hope you make it big! :D

As someone who was growing up in a small white rural community when the Boondocks was first airing, there was definitely a mixed reaction amongst those I asked about it. Some found it unenjoyable and hard to follow because of the use of the vernacular throughout the show, or the mix of childish hood hijinks of Riley against hueys articulate and politically motivated goals with uncle ruckus in the middle of it all came off as tonal whiplash. Personally, when I was younger I had a hard time understanding it (though as a child watching a show like this it's understandable a lot went over my head,) but the things I remembered most was Jasmine being innocent and confused but wanting to believe the best of everybody. But the other part of my identifying with Huey calling out hipporacy and blatant effects of unequality, and his want to understand why the world around us is the way it is and it sparked a lot of moments of quiet reflection, and at the very least helped me to understand the world was a lot bigger scarier and more complicated than my own back yard, and contributed to my desire to do more research into understanding how prejudice and unequal rights played a major role in sculpting the America we know today.
Revisiting it as an adult I can understand a lot more of it now, and I'm more able to grasp the heavier concepts I didn't understand as a kid.
I think it's a way smarter show than most people give it credit for, although I think I can understand how the zanier aspects can put off people more interested in the intellectual aspects, and vice versa.
It's definitely a show with thought and personality put into it and that's something I can really appreciate about it.

"We have to allow an artist to be an artist, if we're ever going to create anything worth consuming."
Wondering what year that quote was made, because we've steadily progressed to a point where many artists don't dare to express themselves, and those that do are subjected to a lot more than just bad reviews. Express an opinion that someone finds objectionable today, and they'll attempt to ruin your life forever. When Salman Rushdie criticizes the times we live in concerning artists, that's saying a lot.

The next boondocks…it would probably be looking directly at reality down the apolitical stance that people have taken and the idea that races while holding on to culture and pride have folded in on the merging and deciding on race. In other words, the next boondocks would have to focus on Jasmin but not play her off as choosing one side until brought the limit like the lemonade stand. Rather be both tackling both sides. Be it up downs or how they work out but stand firm. At least thats what i see next.

Damn I'm really happy you pointed out the issue with the ways black women are represented in the boondocks. I never paid any attention to it. You said it perfectly it is centered on black male perceptions of problems in black society as opposed to strengths. I'll be honest I didn't have a take away that black women were only like what was expressed in the boondocks. I think that the reason I didn't is because as a youth I didn't interact with many people who reflected the characterizations present in the Boondocks. There was no set of people I could use to ground those representations in my immediate reality. I also wanted to say this. I don't think the Boondocks needed to go out of its way to represent every facet of black people, though those would be an interesting things to explore in adjacent media. Good things for whatever reason are rarely funny, the negative stereotypes lend themselves more to the comedic atmosphere than a signal of virtue in a female character. Taking on the current lens with which we approach representation(race/gender) in all shows would lead to the writer losing their personal perspective even if it is wrong in certain contexts. While MacGruder's "narcissism" or exclusive focus on his perceptions can be limiting it is that limited frame that allows him to generate this specific media. If he took it away the Boondocks would be something vastly different and it didn't need to be that. That is an opportunity for another aspiring black creator. I think you address many of these points, just wanted to express my thoughts. Appreciate the video.

in 17:00 you talk about the representation of black characters in media and its hindurance in regards to depiction while pushing a political narrative. (correct me if im wrong with that interpretation)
i was wondering what your opinion is on the representation of newer progressive characters and the responses by those who say the message sometimes dilutes the story. i saw alot of these conversations when it came to star wars, star trek, wonder woman, the avengers and other films, and was wondering what your opinion was on this.

I can see where you are coming from in your criticism of Stinkmeaner, it's uncomfortable to have any flamboyant critique of black people in the white gaze, even weirder when they take to it so well. I don't think it's touting the otherism you claim it is, but similar to the Chappelle Show's 'When Keeping it Real Goes Wrong' skit, I think it's a very biographical satire of blackness in the 21st century and peoples' expectations of our behavior towards perceived disrespect. The difference between the Chappelle skit and the Stinkmeaner episodes is its juxtaposition with the black Woodcrest residents like Grandpa and Tom that 'got out of the hood' are surrounded by whites and are still beholden to this weird expectation of violence they call a nigga moment in the show. Shit it may actually be a pretty interesting take on black masculinity as a whole.
