Very interesting to see this opened up. My friends from high school and I have played A&A together since middle school. Every time we get the chance to meet up since college, we play some version of A&A. We're so used to playing against each other and know regular strategies, that we usually try strange things in our games to see if they'll work. Even after a little over 10 years of playing with them, I still have fun every time.
Even though I don't collect A&A, the collector in me was squirming when you unwrapped the box! That being said, it was really cool to see such a piece of gaming history opened up and to see where it all began for this legendary series. Fascinating.
Would love a full play-through (with strategy sessions (throughout; hidden from the other team) and analysis (before, after, and during everything:)- as well as a review or recap thoughts on it. Really cool to see. Can we play that copy with the owner if we go to that shop (I can dictate without touching if needed;)? :-)
I have a complete how to play for 1942.2 (th-cam.com/video/IKyWaC0vrtM/w-d-xo.html) and 96.3% of the rules transfer over. I think would be easier and faster to produce is a "difference" video. "So, you know how to play 1942.2? This is what you need to know to play 1940." Lay out the rules differences without rehashing everything in the 42.2 video. Would that be helpful?
I still have my original 1981 copy. It's not in mint original condition because I opened it and played it as a teenager, but all the pieces are there. I never saw it in a store. I only knew about the game because I saw it advertised in a brochure from another Avalon Hill bookcase game. You had to order it by mail, which took a few weeks. It is made of Acid paper, so unlike paper products made today from Alkaline, it will "Yellow" over time once unsealed. It's crazy to see this original game being sold on Ebay on rare occasions for $1,000. Best of luck with your game.
I got that game new in the mid 80s, and by then they had graduated to plastic pieces that you had to separate. The little fighters were kind of cute, I must say. And the bombers were huge by comparison.
@@BoardGameNation I remember the game, because I played it quite extensively with neighborhood friends. I also remember it was the most expensive board game that I ever purchased -- like $59 or so new. That was pretty expensive back in the mid 80s. Especially for something that had no electronics. I figure what...15% costs to produce, and 85% intellectual property profit margin? I wonder what the store paid for it before marking it up to $59? And you're right. The molded plastic pieces looked of the same type used in models that you glue together. They had really good detail for their size.
I am not sure how the costs are broken out. I imagine that the designing and printing of all the plastic units wasn't cheap. Either way, I think it was worth every penny! :)
I love the game pieces! Instead of making plastic pieces, they could have really made unique looking illustrations of vehicles and units in subsequent editions.
Sure. That could have been cool, but I had to keep reminding myself that at the time this was just a startup independent game. When I think about it that way, this is actually a really good first effort. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! I'm glad you like them. I'll be back in the studio in a couple of weeks. We will see what I come up with! There will definitely be some A&A content in there along with some other fun games. Thanks for watching!
This is really neat. I was surprised to see Spain and Sweden considered pro-German neutrals, and it appears Iraq and Iran are pro-British, with Mexico and some others as pro-American neutrals given the shading. Here I thought it was an innovative and creative new system added in the 1940 games, but apparently it was one of Larry's original ideas that just got left by the wayside until he brought it back.
I dug a little into this version and I discovered that sheets were printed for French and Chinese units as well, but Nova evidently sold out before it could publish any additional rules for incorporating these nations into the game. It seems that was another early idea of Larry's that was finally seen in the newer versions.
@@BoardGameNation no we had later editions. honestly can't remember which one but the board was solid and lots of plastic pieces. this was in the late 80s
I have a question if u can answer If there is an amphibious assault along with cruiser in a sea zone thag already contains enemy warships and defender scrambles fighters then in sea combat if all the warships are killed from both the sides except the transport then offloading troops (amphibious assault ) will happen at that time only or in next round
If the sea combat ends with the sea zone classified as "friendly" to the attackers, the transports lands, offloads the troops, and they conduct combat. The types of troops or their origins don't matter. Hope this helps!

I have been thinking about making a difference video for AA50 and Europe/Pacific 1940. I'm not sure I have played AA50 enough to make strategy videos for it at this point, but I'll give it some thought. I'll be back in the studio in a couple of weeks. We will see what I can figure out! Thanks!
hey did you ever end up recording the axis and allies game at the convention? me and my friends really wanna see how you play a full game. it’s so much nicer to watch people play in person on a game board than watching them play strangers online
I did record the finals of the Global 42 event in June. It was 232GB of video of 9 hours of play! It is going to take me some time to sort it out. I'm at GenCon now, but we couldn't get permission to set up all of our equipment to record a game. We are going to try again next year. Thanks for watching!
The original rules were better. There are 2 major differences. 1. All combat took place before movement. 2. Also, I don't think there were capitols, just factories.
A few initial observations: Germany uses the Swatiska, which has been banned in Germany since Allied Occupied IRL. This is an interesting choice considering the size of the German board gaming community, and the American Forces in Germany at the time of publication. Also, what is going on with French territories in edition? Are they impassable or neutral?
I agree that the inclusion of the swastika while accurate may have hurt sales opportunities. I'm not sure about the specific rules. We haven't had a chance to play it yet. Thanks for watching!
While the Swastika isn't used on the roundels in the classic Milton Bradley version, it IS depicted on the box in what appears to be a Kriegsmarine flag. I'm not sure what the laws in Germany permit but the Milton Bradley version might have been banned too, or they might have had to make a special box without the Swastika for sale in that country.
I am working on that now. I'm hoping to arrange an interview with someone on their team answering that exact question. When we get that done, we will make an announcement. What I have heard so far is that they are making a straight reprint of a number of A&A games. They are also rumored to be developing a new version. I'll share more when I can.
Ok So u can make differences but will u explain large things in detail like convoy disruptions scrambling major industrial minor industrial complex air base naval base kamikaze ??
Exactly. It will show any changes from the 1942.2 (ie, Carrier take two hits) and all the new stuff (At War, Mongolian Rule, etc). Everything else folks can find in the 1942.2 video. So, for example, if a viewer doesn't understand the idea of Offshore Bombardments. The difference video won't explain that because the rules are the same between the two games. They will need to go to the 1942.2 or other more specific video we have made on the topic. Does that make sense?
No shame in opening it either. Couldn't have gone to a better gamer! We need to know if it's any good! I bet we could make a print n play version given the components.
The only official rules that I know of that included an Atomic Bomb is the Nova Games version. I think you can find the rules with a Google search. Good hunting! Thanks for watching!
We are nearly finished with our other projects. I am hoping to have a new video out in the next two or three weeks. I have a bunch of unboxings to shoot and then edit. I'll be starting with a great game I found at GenCon called Paco Sako. Then, I'll tackle A&A Europe and Pacific 1940.
Board game nation can i do that in axis allies g40 version I start game in 1939 with each round meaning 6 months of actual time ipcs will be based on ipc value of land territory of nations and instead of following setup nations will start with no army on board they can buy and place armies anywhere in their home nation no non combat move and no mobilization before going to war but after going to war units can be placed only in territories with factories and then non combat and mobilization will be allowed Is this good idea Love from India
First, you bought the game. You can do whatever you'd like as long as everyone playing agrees to the same rules. Starting with no units on the board creates an entirely new dynamic to the game. I would be curious how that would play out. I'm guessing there are some strategies that might break the game if a player could buy whatever they want and declare war whenever they want. Considering the IPC generation starts in the Axis favor, I would imagine giving them several turns of Collect Income phases before any combat was declared would also be an issue. Interesting idea! With a few tweaks, it might be fun! Here is another idea along those lines: Add up the value of all the units on the starting cards and give that many IPCs to the corresponding player. Players then take turns placing units in their territories or adjacent sea zones until they run out. Then, start the game as normal. Have fun!
Renegade Games has recently announced that they are reprinting both of these games. I think I'm going to hold off until I can get copies of the new versions and then do a compare and contrast video. What do you think? Do you any specific questions about the 1940 games I can answer in the meantime?
Actually i have seen 1942 edition that u made but players who have only axis allies global edition they would only Like to learn about global not 1942 I know it is difficult job for u But u are an amazing explainer That's why I request to do full axis allies global 1940 rules explanation 😀
I appreciate your confidence. Here's the trick: nearly everything in the 1942.2 rules video will transfer over to Global. A "difference" video would be much shorter (and easier to produce) if it can refer players back to the giant rules video for 1942.2. It took months to make that video and it the idea of re-making all the examples and explanations for a game that has the same basic rules makes me want to pull out what is left of my hair. :) I'm traveling to a A&A event this weekend, hoping to come how with a ton of Global content. We will see how it all shakes out.
Well, for the past few weeks I have been totally occupied with a different project (home renovation). I'm going to have that completed in the next three weeks or so. However, I did just get a copy of Europe and Pacific. So, I'll probably start with an unboxing video for each. That will make it much easier to build out from there. Probably not what you were hoping to hear, but some progress in that direction. :)
It was good. I learned a lot. I don't have the right equipment to record a full size global game well. I'll be making something out of the 250Gb worth of videos and pictures, but it is going to take some time.
I appreciate that! We are definitely giving that some thought. Do you feel comfortable with 1942 Second Edition? If so, made a video explaining the differences would be helpful. What do you think?
I'm hoping to start publishing more content in September. I am also planning a new interview with Larry Harris in mid-August that we try to put out as quickly as possible. Lots great stuff in the hopper... but first, I have to finish up the renovation so that I have a place to live!
We move into the new place in 15 days... no matter what! I did get brand copies of Europe & Pacific. They are ready for unboxing videos when I get back to the studio. Thanks for checking on me! We are getting there!
To each their own, but in my opinion the swastika is still a very active symbol of hate that for some is a source of pain and to others is rallying point for acts of violence. I understand that it is historically accurate in a WW2 and other feel differently, but I would rather not spend my free time playing with them. Now, if I went to a friend's place to play and he had them on the board used appropriately, I wouldn't make a big deal about. It just isn't something I would include in any game I host. Thanks for watching!
@@BoardGameNation good take and if someone I’m playing with has a problem with them I’d remove them. Rather have happy gamers then historical accuracy any day
@13:54 I think that when I watch "Wings of the Luftwaffe" or anything from 1994 and before how much saner the actual WW2 generation handled the history and symbology of the war. It seems the further we get from the war the more insane the liberals of the West like pretending anything to the right of them is Hitler and kvetching to hysterical levels. Worse our history shows are becoming more insane where if you watch one now, even if it's just about the Battle of the Bulge or El-Almein you get a 15 minute lecture on the race politics of Nazism. I get it with Russia doing it (kinda I mean as usual former leftie government) but you'd almost think the way things are now that our ancestors were the Nazis not the ones who killed them.

Here is another idea along those lines: Add up the value of all the units on the starting cards and give that many IPCs to the corresponding player. Players then take turns placing units in their territories or adjacent sea zones until they run out. Then, start the game as normal.
Have fun!
Board game nation when will axis allies global 1940 video come out
Renegade Games has recently announced that they are reprinting both of these games. I think I'm going to hold off until I can get copies of the new versions and then do a compare and contrast video.
What do you think?
Do you any specific questions about the 1940 games I can answer in the meantime?
Actually i have seen 1942 edition that u made but players who have only axis allies global edition they would only Like to learn about global not 1942
I know it is difficult job for u
But u are an amazing explainer
That's why I request to do full axis allies global 1940 rules explanation
😀
I appreciate your confidence. Here's the trick: nearly everything in the 1942.2 rules video will transfer over to Global. A "difference" video would be much shorter (and easier to produce) if it can refer players back to the giant rules video for 1942.2.
It took months to make that video and it the idea of re-making all the examples and explanations for a game that has the same basic rules makes me want to pull out what is left of my hair. :)
I'm traveling to a A&A event this weekend, hoping to come how with a ton of Global content. We will see how it all shakes out.
Board game nation any update on axis allies global??
Well, for the past few weeks I have been totally occupied with a different project (home renovation). I'm going to have that completed in the next three weeks or so.
However, I did just get a copy of Europe and Pacific. So, I'll probably start with an unboxing video for each. That will make it much easier to build out from there.
Probably not what you were hoping to hear, but some progress in that direction. :)
Well by the way do u have any idea when axis allies global video will come
Not sure. I have a lot on my plate right. Hoping to have it out in the next few months.
Thanks for watching!
How was ur axis allies event
It was good. I learned a lot. I don't have the right equipment to record a full size global game well. I'll be making something out of the 250Gb worth of videos and pictures, but it is going to take some time.
Board game nation any update on new video
Still stuck working on my other projects. I promise, no one wants more new BGN videos than me! Hoping to be back at it soon.
Board game nation love from india
Thank you!
Board game nation sorry to disturb u again and again
Do u know when will new video come out??
Working to get back in the studio asap. I have a stack a great games to share!
Pls a video on how to play axis allies global 1940 I think no one can explain this better than u
I appreciate that! We are definitely giving that some thought.
Do you feel comfortable with 1942 Second Edition? If so, made a video explaining the differences would be helpful. What do you think?
Oh when can we expect unboxing video atleast
I'm hoping to start publishing more content in September. I am also planning a new interview with Larry Harris in mid-August that we try to put out as quickly as possible.
Lots great stuff in the hopper... but first, I have to finish up the renovation so that I have a place to live!
You need the expansión, france and chinese teams.
Those versions are great, but I thought is was fun to look back at where it all began!
Thanks for watching!
like it
Thanks for watching!
Board game nation any update on your next video hope ur house renovation is done😂
We move into the new place in 15 days... no matter what!
I did get brand copies of Europe & Pacific. They are ready for unboxing videos when I get back to the studio.
Thanks for checking on me! We are getting there!
Ive never minded swasticas inn ww2 games its the flag they used so id rather it than some weird fake flag.
Rather have happy gamers then historical accuracy any day
Agree. 💯
Thanks for watching!
Tell Shannon to make an email for 901 games, so I can email him about axis and allies and some of his stock at his store, I can't call him, cus it would be long distance:( if that's possible it would be fantastic! But totally understand if not.
Hello! Here is the email for 901 Games: 901*games*memphis*@gma*il.com
I added the * to stop the bots from spamming the account. Remove them, and you should have no trouble reaching the store.
Thanks for watching!
@@BoardGameNation gotta protect from bots for sure. Thank you so much!!!
No problem. Good luck!
