I have found that dressed office casual and carrying a clip board can get you nearly anywhere as well. Also, wearing a jacket or shirt which says security in large letters works well, too.

While the ladder does probably help, it's mostly confidence. It's common during pentesting (Testing the security of a business) that the guys just walk in there, either announcing to front desk there are here to fix (insert generic thing) and ask for directions or they don't even announce it and just walk like they belong. You wouldn't believe how seldom they get stopped or even questioned. They could just walk in, do some shit in the serverroom and be out.

The military even calls them Carbines. Because they are tools, not weapons until they are used as such in a combat situation. Look it up in the TM, front page...Or any piece of military regulation regarding the firearms.

You're missing my point...What I'm trying to say is: the word "assault" shouldn't be added to a rifle. It makes people afraid of something that's designed to protect the person behind it. Firearms were designed to defend the shooter the easiest way possible.
Swords are the same way, they were designed primarily for the military so the person wielding the sword could defend himself against someone else with a sword trying to kill him. But you never here the media call them "assault swords" or "assault knives" because the government wants you to be afraid of firearms so they take your 2nd amendment away and then THEY will have all the power.
Think about it, if you take firearms away from law abiding citizens and the criminals still get them illegally, what are we supposed to do? Fight back with knivis? Good luck and don't count on the police, they often show up after people are dead.
