There actually was a woman king. Jadwig, or Hedwig, in Medieval Poland, around the time of the Northern Crusades. Legally, the ruler of Poland had to be a king, so the king said his female heir, Hedwig, would be the 'king'. Pretty sure she's also acknowledged as a Saint by the Catholic Church.

I can’t tell you how encouraging it is to be on the receiving end of something like this. About two years ago I was 350 pounds and wanted to take control of my weight and my health. I liked lifting but wasn’t as strong as most of the guys in there, and I would actively watch where I walked because I was embarrassed to end up on someone’s instagram or something.
One day while working out this jacked dude came up and introduced himself. Said he’d seen me coming in more regularly and wanted to encourage me to keep up the good work and to not worry about all the other people in there then gave me some workout advice. William Wallace killed a sheriff, fought the English for independence, eventually lost, and was drawn and quartered. All the stuff in the middle - the love interests and some of the politicking, as well as the wildly non-period costuming - is just good storytelling.
I've read a good bit about William Wallace since I'm Scottish, love the movie, and the guy stayed at my families castle (Dundas Keep, Edenborough) on his way to invade England, and accounts of the details, well, they differ wildly depending on the source. It was ~700 years ago, record keeping wasn't at its finest, and after all, the victors write the history books.
That all said, and without even watching the woman king, I can tell you which flick is better.

The Northern part of Africa and the Middle East and Asia was well known for the slave trading. The main difference between slavery in the US versus there is that it wasn't solely based on race and dehumanization of others. It wasn't taken away your future possibilities of being free. Their tribe's purpose was about survival and striking fear into their enemies as a way to protect themselves. And it worked for a good while. They were outcast making a name for themselves. It’s a bit similar to Braveheart in the rewriting. The Scots in that movie are depicted as savages running full tilt into English forces wearing nothing but plaid kilts and leather, when in reality they wore plates/chainmail armor and had very disciplined battle formations. I like Braveheart as an entertaining movie, but it had zero basis in historical reality other than the fact that William Wallace was defeated and executed. I will at least give Mel Gibson credit for addressing the horrid practice of primae noctis, though.

I feel like we didn't watch the same movie. In the whole film there is only one white man as the main character, unfortunately he is also the only kind of racist. The rest of the characters are not racist just extremely tribalist. When she confronts the whites at the end of the film, it's not because she hates them, but because she wants revenge for her daughter and her friend. She's totally indifferent to white people most of the time, and she doesn't lie when she talks about their intentions.

Europeans for the most part (except the Portuguese) were not going into the heart of Africa or even past the coastal areas to capture slaves. A European was expected to live less than a year in Sub-saharan Africa because of disease. This was even the case with the Niger Expedition in 1841 which saw 130 of the 150 people come down with disease. 55 of them died.
