- In this video I show you a basic setup of the Donner Starrypad, including how to connect to the editor software and start controlling things in your DAW.
For the editor software please use the following links:
MAC: drive.google.c...
WIN: drive.google.c...
9:28 the reason it's quiet is because of your velocity settings for the midi controller. By default it's a diagonal line of slope 1, meaning the loudness is directly proportional to how physically hard you press the midi pad. But personally i'm not a big fan of this feature, I prefer to have all the pads at full volume no matter how hard i press them, so to achieve this I had to go into the midi controller settings in my DAW and change the velocity graph to a straight horizontal line at maximum height from start to finish. Might be helpful for some people
Thank you! Glad you said this because I use at full velocity too. Still, the pad sensitivity on the starrypad isn’t great compared to others. Thanks for watching!!
@@sonusaurelius6576 in retrospect i guess it's even easier to just press the "full level" button on the Starrypad. That way you can essentially have the on/off switch for velocity sensitivity easily accessible. But yeah, personally i don't think this feature is for me at all. If i want to change the volume of a note i'd rather just do it in the DAW - doing it manually/physically and getting it just right would require a whole new dimension of skill that i do not have lol
Depending on the type of vst you use for the controller you can even set anything above a certain velocity to give full volume and anything below that value can be another sample all together. Example: everything above a value can be a snare and anything below that value can be a rim shot and/or have less effect. I use FPC on fl studio.
2:07 in the video before this section, you were talking about the “send to device” and “get from device” sections being greyed out because of not being saved to the applications folder. Well the starry application is in that folder, so I’m not seeing how I would save it if it’s already there
Yeah sorry, that part wasn’t clear. there’s too reasons 1) not saved to applications 2) the application hasn’t been connected to the starrypad.
For connection, go to options and device setup and make sure you select the starrypad as the device you want to control/edit. If it doesn’t show in device setup, unplug it and plug it back in to the computer. Hope that helps.
So, I dont see or have any of the send to device options? what should I do?
ive been trying to set this up for fl studio for the past few days and im having quite some trouble.would you ever do a video for fl as well?
Hi Twuan, I don’t own or use FL Studio. Try this (copy and paste it into your browser); www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/app_wiz5.htm
Also have a look at Alex moukala’s youtube channel. I know he uses FL Studios for his productions and he may have some tutorials on MIDI programming in FL.
i ended up messing around with some of the channel settings and that did the trick. Thanks! @@sonusaurelius6576
for some reason i am unable to "send to device". I have tried unplugging device like previous comment mentioned as well as changing the file location (Win10) and to no avail. Wondering if the poster of the video knows the answer or if any other viewers have had this problem.
Did you try to connect to the device? In the editor software select options and then device setup and make sure that the starrypad is selected in both midi in and midi out. Might look a bit different in Win software, but needs to be done for the starrypad to speak to the editor.
Can you connect the Donner Starrypad to an external synth like the Roland mc101, with the "midi out" from the Starrypad into the "midi in" port of the Roland?
Can the two devices communicate with each other, and will the pad controller trigger sounds from the synth? Is there any particular configuration in the settings to adjust in order to make this two devices work together? Thanks.
Hi Barbara, it’s technically possible. I’m not familiar with the mc101, but would say that you’ll be able to configure the starrypad to trigger its sounds and functions. You might just need to review the manual of the MC101 first and see if they provide a MIDI guide. Also Perhaps get on forums etc and see what other people are using and has worked for them. In my opinion if you’re looking for a midi controller for external synths and drum machines. I’d say take a look at the Arturia range. Hope that helps.
didn’t even tell us how to change the application when im using windows instead of a mac.
Thanks molly. Unfortunately I don’t use PC for music production. The principles would be the same though. Do you have a specific problem you’d like troubleshoot?
Great video dude!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello, I see they keypad starry Donner but the background screen you have e, maybe the synthesizer, I don’t see that
Hello! There are two similarly named editors. There’s starrykey and starrypad. Be sure to download the starrypad editor. The link is in the description. Just copy and paste it to your browser.
the links are cut off, cant find website.not very help full please fix =(
Hello, thanks for watching. You're right, the links don't work when you click on them from youtube, but you can copy and paste them into your browser and they will work. Or you can go to the donner website, as per the video and downoad it from there.
Is there another editor for starrypads?
Hello! That’s a good question. I don’t know if other editors might work with the starrypad. Generally companies make editor software for specific devices or only for their own range of products. You could try another editor software like akai mpd pad software editor, but I would surprised if it worked with the starrypad.
Why are you asking?
I was asking because i coundnt download it because it just sent me to a google drive (i have windows) and i when i tried to download the google drive but it just downloaded me a winraw and i dont pay for winraw
But ill try your recommendations, thank you!
Ah i see... try using 7Zip for win. it's free and unzips almost anything. www.7-zip.org
how do I get to what page you're on in the beginning ? I downloaded what you have but mine looks so diff and still has no sound or anything when I have it hooked up to Mac
Hi Miranda. I don’t know why they make it so difficult to find the editor software. Try the below links. Hopefully that works for you. Thanks

Windows: drive.google.com/file/d/1PLJ7gZ09TUI_gGtBvyDdsZgL1fCInKzc/view?usp=sharing
Is there a video on how to get the sound to work I followed all the steps but hear no sound
I don’t think there is but I might be able to help. What are trying to control?
How can I assign keyboard shortcuts to the pads ?
So you mean for your operating system or functions in your daw?
@@sonusaurelius6576 "Ctrl 4" "Shift +P"
Hi, thanks for the video! I got the Starrypad today and I try to install the software but the buttons "Send to device" and "Get from device" are disabled although I moved it into Applications and used Terminal.
Any idea why?
Glad you found the video helpful :) Sounds like you've done everything. Although , wonder if you managed to connect the software with the device in options and device setup?
@@sonusaurelius6576 I was able to solve it. Was exactly this the problem but I had to unplug and plug back in the Starrypad. Many thanks :)
Great job!!
can somebody give me the link to the software pls??
Hello! The links are in the description. Just copy and paste them into your browser.
Where I can find registration code for donner site to claim melodics and cubase le?
To my knowledge the starrypad doesn’t come with Cubase LE or any sounds. If you’re looking for free DAWs, sounds and plug-ins try bedroomproducersblog.com.
Can you sample a sound and use it somehow?
Starrypad is a midi controller so it plays beats on your computer or midi capable drum machines. The device itself doesn’t hold memory. If you want something with that feature perhaps look at Native Instruments or Akai drum machines.
Or do you want me to make a video showing how to sample something and use the starrypad to play it?
@sonusaurelius6576 Any video on that would be cool yes.
Ok so do you need a computer bc I'm trying to use my phone and I also have a tablet
Hi! You can use the starrypad on an iPad or iPhone you just need to feed it power somehow, because the smart device won’t give it the 5v it needs to work. There are videos online explaining this. And you might need to get a powered USB hub with a lightning connection.
@@sonusaurelius6576 I don't have any apple products and no computer I'm also trying to become a young artist in the music category and I don't know if you need to buy any other parts for it
@@sonusaurelius6576 I don't have any apple products or a computer I'm also a young artist trying to make beats and do you have to buy any other parts for the beat maker
Didn’t work.
You’re welcome to put more info here to help you troubleshoot.
Why can't you just plug it in and it plays for us computer dum dum
Yeah it can be frustrating.
Lol
Don’t work…things a pos
that, it is...
I have windows and we don’t have an application folder. My send to ect is greyed out. What do I do?
Make sure your device is connected. Go to options (I think) and then select the dinner starrypad, if it’s not there unplug and plug back in.
Hi will get back to you…I’m about to set starrypad with Reaper in windows q0 👍
