I so appreciate when someone says 'here's a simple exercise' and follows through with a genuinely simple exercise. Thank you! This one should be really helpful. 👍
Theres a not quite 5 minute video in the course but yeah would be a very helpful practice tool. I'll think about how to incorporate something like that in the future though! Thanms for watching the video
That is a whole other kettle of fish! Do you play open handed or on a lefty kit? In college one of my classmates played open on the hats but then also the ride cymbal to his right so basically switched at will!
I just started drumming self-taught over the last few months, something that helped me was taping masking tape near the top of my left stick to give it a bit more weight because my left hand felt oblivious to the stick, unlike my right which has full consciousness of it because it's my naturally dominant hand. Also using left for hi-hat to make sure it's getting a lot more practice, which also gives a right hand the tricky job of doing snare patterns while keeping rhythm on the left which is going to further help me down the line
@@ethanwasme4307 grats on self taught, takes a lot of discipline, I'm a member of that drum journey club as well. Great idea, however, make sure you practice regularly with your "regular" sticks, I did the heavier left stick but found things felt different or found they went flying out of my hands more when I went back to my normal ones. Found it can cause unforseen issues in my self taught drumming experience, same as using a pillow for strength practicing, the physical dynamic change a lot. Found both great if used "correctly" if you will. Keep it up enjoy your journey.
Playing open-handed helped me overcome my weaker hand. The so-called weaker hand can perform some things even better because it uses rebound better almost automatically.
@@Eddie_da_head_ play the copy cat game as well. Play pattern with hands, replicate with feet and do the same thing simultaneously with hand and feet, really helps a lot, don't forget technique, especially ankle in my experience. Enjoy your journey.
Definitely a good exercise but the one I posted wears you out a bit more and will build Strength and speed Quicker... Still both are good and this is another great exercise I recommend. I gave you a sub.
My weak hand could not make paradiddle in quicker tempo. After 10 minutes of this exercise it just moves so much better. A miracle? I dont know, but this exercise really works
@@mysteryperson6168 no idea. My speed and your speed could be wildly different and so just choose a tempo that feels a little challenging while also being manageable. I do exercises like this for a max of 5 mins and then move on. Within those 5, increase the tempo if you feel you can and make sure to track your tempos and the ones you achieved in a practice diary 👊
Couple of options could be to program a click or snare pattern in groove scribe.com Or set your metronome to have no accent and just play a single sound. I use the app tempo and it's great but most will do it.
I've been playing for over 30 years and I finally came out of the closet......I admitted that my left hand was super bad. I'll give this a go every day for 5 min sessions 3x a day. Busy life here
@@joetroutt7425 don't sweat that. Takes time. It'll come, I struggled with speed for a long time, still do depending how much ilimb independence I need to use on the patterns. you gotta be able to play slow for fast to sound good anyway.

You are welcome!
I also love the fact he's not one of those teachers that just show off how fast they are. Very humble with his skills. Excellent.
@JO-ti5zp too kind 👊❤️
@@DaveMajor you're welcome. 🍻
If there is a definition of criminally under rated, it's this channel.
Every video is masterfully produced/taught/played and unbelievably helpful!
Too kind my man.
Couldn’t agree more
Thanks mate 👊
Maybe I'm tapped out, but that medium felt sooo FAST!! Love the exercise. Loving your content keep it up!
I always say to my students...my tempo...your tempo. Do the tempo that you can do and build up to faster speeds
perfect page for beginners
You playing this excercise for 5 minutes would be a great video to play allang to!

Awesome mate! Glad to hear it. Make sure you grab the course too for a few more killer exercises
Being a left handed drummer is also hard very awkward lol

Im trying to do that but on the kick to make my double bass better
@@totogroove you are so lucky, I'm jealous haha. My left hand was/can be/does still struggle with rebound.

Maybe this will actually help. We'll find out when I get some new sticks.
Thanking you from Nigeria just started drum classed yesterday. This is helpful too
Happy to help!
I do something similar to this with taps and accents and have the exact same practice pad as you
Awesome. The Blue lightning is a great pad

Cool! I know this pattern from the Middle East )))
What’s the tempo on the slow, medium and fast ones?

let me know how you get on
Is this exercise good for a lefty who want’s to be righty?
Absolutely! Just flip the sticking
Clocks by coldplay is the perfect song to practice this with
Agreed! Then use youtubes playback speed option to push the tempo!

Tempo is relative. My tempo might be wildly different from yours. Play at a speed that is challenging but you still can play for 5 minutes.
Add drum or drummer to your title, for peeps who are searching...
TH-cams algorithm is great at knowing what the video is about and what kind of channel I have so itll probably show up anyway.
🤔 Chris Elliott might stop by
with his strong hand! 💪😂👍
fortunately it appeared for me
Is he playing the kick wrong or am I crazy
