Blackmagic Design Smart Videohub 40x40 - Overview & Thoughts

  • Overview of the Blackmagic Design Smart Videohub 40x40.
    This is a 40-input, 40-output SDI video routing switcher, which allows redirection of any video source to any video destination, and supports SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, and 6G-SDI.
    I didn't make it clear in the video, but my one wish for the SVH is that it could allow you to see video sources without routing them. Currently, to view a video source it has to be output to a destination, and you choose that destination to view it. In my mind it makes at least as much sense to have the option to view by source as well.

    Hey Doug, quick question for you. I have an esports center and want to get this device to switch between different PCs. Will I be able to access the video feed through OBS software so I can stream the content to twitch, TH-cam, etc.? Is each source accessible in OBS? Thanks for your time.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd need video capture devices to get video into the computer so OBS can see it. Since the Videohubs use SDI, you'd probably want to find an SDI capture device like the UltraStudio Mini Recorder 3G (which requires Thunderbolt), or you'd have to use converters to get the SDI signal into an HDMI input.

    Can you put labels on a output destination? I definitely would need 2 cause I would want to run everything thru it and each camera would need 4 destinations

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can label the destinations.
      But if you're going to always send the same sources to the same destinations, a video distribution amplifier might be a better choice.

    Great and informative video on the BMD Smart hub 40x40. Your new setup looks more or less like the way we are wanting to go building a 4K rack…
    Is there any possibility please of you making a diagram/flow chart of the wiring setup you have used in your updated 4k rack system?
    I would be extremely grateful if you would be so kind if it is at all possible?

      You can infer how everything is connecting from the list of inputs and outputs as seen in the video starting at 6:25. The 'Converter' inputs/outputs go to Decimator MD-HXs, Optical go to a BMD Optical Fiber converter, and anything else referenced (Aux In/Out, TV/Projector/Engineer/Director outputs, etc.) just go to a 48 BNC patch panel on the back.

    • @bradhotdog
      @bradhotdog 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Johnson Productions so do you just need to have the software running? Or do you need to load the software and load the presets? We use a production truck for sports and I'm just now realizing that every time we go for a shoot, I now have to re-Route every single cable every single time we turn the truck back on.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Two things:
      (1) The videohub always remembers its last state when powered up, so if you're doing the same event over and over again you wouldn't have to load any presets or re-patch. It would just remember how it was last configured before it was powered down.
      (2) Storing a preset it is done by loading the PC/Mac software, clicking a button to save the preset to a file. Recalling that preset is done by loading the software, then opening the file you saved previously. After you've saved or recalled the preset the software doesn't have to continue running.

    • @WarriorNetwork
      @WarriorNetwork ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djp_video I've noticed that saving and loading a preset actually doesn't do anything at all. Is there a reason for this? HyperDecks don't lock to timecode. With the newest models you can connect a timecode source and it will embed that in the metadata of the file, but that's all it does -- it doesn't alter timing of the device in any way so they can still go out of sync.
