The One That Got Away - Nazaré [Drone] [Big Wave]

  • A Surfer briefly hesitates and decides not to charge a wave in Nazaré, Portugal, during the infamous monster Swell of November 8, 2017, otherwise known as the “Big Wednesday”.
This Drone Footage was captured just minutes before British Big Wave surfer Andrew Cotton caught the famous wave that broke his back and ultimately sent him to the Hospital. The wave on this video was recorded as one of the Biggest of the Session, and the surfer probably did the right thing as it would be difficult to outrun this specific wave and ride it successfully, a rescue would've been extremely difficult on that specific area of Praia do Norte.
“The Big Wednesday”, November 8, 2017 is still the Biggest day on record during the current big wave season in Portugal, it is expected that other major swells will hit the coast of Portugal before the season ends in mid March 2018.
Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous for huge waves since Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a then record in 2011 for the largest wave ever surfed when he rode a 78-foot wave. Since then, the place has attracted many daredevils from a great variety of extreme sports.

The crash of a thousand liquid freight trains - that wave is really beyond words but certainly one that would inspire the myths with its essence shattering ebb and flow, dynamic with deadly allure . Beautiful capture! One of the greatest things I've ever seen.

I cant stop watching it! I dont surf but I love the ocean and just watching it with its full power if shape of waves makes me feel alive. Been to Nazaré twice, can't forget I was stuck there, in the lighthouse, watching the ocean, the waves, stunned and amazed... I am now in Australia and every once and then I need to go back there and watch videos from there.
The music and the scene here are the perfect mix to be able to observe the magnificence of what power is.
    I love it.
    Obrigada :)

The person or people responsible for this should definitely get recognition big time.
The choice of music underscores just how incredibly massive this whole production truly is.
I also think that the Universe should get an Academy Award for it's Performance.
It's such an amazing time in history to be alive.
    Thank you for making this.
    With respect and admiration.

surfing is absolutely no joke. even if you snowboard....picture snowboarding as the mountain is constantly forming beneath you....that is if you are able to be above the board when it happens......and afterwards too lol. not only that, if you fall off, your board is tethered to your ankle, and with the whipping waters, that crap can shoot right back in your face, or your neck. You are literally instructed to put your hands up to shield your head WHENEVER you fall, which no matter how talented you are, you will...and if you get knocked out somehow on the ski slopes, you're resting unconscious on the snow somewhere, if you get knocked out in the waves and you're not by the shore?? you're lying down unconscious alright, while sinking into a watery crypt because you are now unconsciously taking in water and noone knows where tf you are!!..........but have fun out there sport *smile* *wink* :D

That was a very wise choice not to drop in on that wave. If you took the typical path down the face of that wave and set up your line, you would have been smashed by the white water from behind. It was basically a huge peak that all broke at the same time. The only safe place was high up on the shoulder. Smart choice by the surfer to pass on that wave.

I just can't imagine that power. Biggest waves I've been hit by have been a little over head height, and the power of them is enough to make me do somersaults in the water. If that crashed on you, instant death I assume before you even get a chance to drown?

    • @Nuvendil
      @Nuvendil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No, most likely you drown if you die. If you have a life vest like they do, you have good odds of surviving if someone can come get you out of there. But you can suffer really serious injury from being tossed around or worse, thrown out of the wave when it crashes. Hitting water at 40mph is like smacking concrete and can easily break bones and cause serious injury or death. But no one has yet died surfing Nazare and there's been plenty of wipe outs on big waves.
