    VW just confirmed that they aren't getting rid of the Beetle. A spokeswoman said so in an official email.

      Craig Zorzy I saw that since filming this! Sure hope it's true.

      They actually built a small handful of AWD, higher horsepower Beetles back in the run of the previous New Beetle. Needless to say those cars were expensive when new, so expensive they were never marketed outside Europe.

    Great review I truly love this car and hope to get to drive it one day but since I live in an area with unpaved roads it will be a long time before I get one so for now i'm sticking to my jeep wrangler

    Great review Mike and such a nostalgia inducing car that despite packaging compromises adds some much needed flair to staid VW range. Engine tech interesting - in Oz our mark 2 new Beetle range had twin charge 1.4 and discontinuation very quietly undertaken although sales not great neither was supply or marketing.

    Another great review! You spoil us.
    I'm sorry to see the Bug go. Maybe it will return some day. My first car memory is being in the "pocket" behind the back seat in our family's '61 model. We didn't need no stinkin' seatbelts!

    • @MikeDPerkins
      @MikeDPerkins 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hell, you didn't even have the OPTION of seatbelts, if I remember correctly!

    • @speecher1959
      @speecher1959 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right. Not an option. Besides, why would one need seatbelts if a parent's arm in the chest could do?

      Kevin Johnson I also rode on the pocket of my Dads 61 beetle. I was 2 years old then no child seats in the 60s. Yesterday I purchased a white 2018 Beetle S with the apppearance and convenience package for $20K plus tax for my 13 year old , she won’t start driving for 2 years yet but according to VW they are building the last this year and sell them as limited edition. Even last year dealer allocation was very scarce.

    Why would they git rid of such a historic icon? Such a shame it hasn't been selling well the design isnt that bad.

      @TheLifeOnHigh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @venictos - yeah, the later models are definitely more masculine looking and less embarrassing to be seen in 👌🏽

    Those back seats were never made for us tall guys...and having big feet...almost impossible to contort your way out of there...but...nothing like being in the driver’s seat/front passenger seat!

    Amazing video!!! Since I want to buy a Volkswagen Beetle for my first car should I buy a old year Volkswagen Beetle or a new year Volkswagen Beetle?

    I wish they'd have kept the R-line in the United States...I can't find an R-line in a 2017...they should have kept a manual transmission as an option as well

    The Memminger speedster is the direction VW should have went..........it didn't forget what made the VW beetle appealing to so many.....while moving forward technology-wise

    There has always been just a hint of the Porsche 911 hiding inside of all Beetles.I keep wishing VW would just smush and stretch the Beetle a little bit to make a sort of VW "Audi TT" or VW "Porsche 911" LITE. They used to at least have the Scirocco and Coronado (they're both unavailable in the USA,) but a step further to a poor man's Porsche "sports car" (think Miata territory) would be brilliant.

    • @MikeDPerkins
      @MikeDPerkins 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And isn't it a shame that we don't get the Scirocco or Coronado? A friend of mine used to race the old Scirocco in SCCA and killed with it! But you're absolutely right - a "poor man's Porsche" like the old VW Type 2 fastbacks would be killer.

    The problem and counter to this vehicle is the Golf. In convertible form it really is the only affordable 4 seat convertible other than a Mini Cooper. Crazy how little choice there is for convertibles under 30k

    I plan to buy a 2018 "S" convertible in about 2 years, from a private seller, to avoid the initial 30% depreciation, sales tax, and dealer fees. Hopefully this new engine is not a lemon. If so, hopefully I find out before buying one. I definitely want the smallest wheels available. I'm not into the GHETTO thing.

    VW Missed the mark when they built the Dune without AWD, Quattro or 4motion , and even offering it on any of the Beetles. It was a serious Miss and well as the ability to turn off Traction Control. I hope someone at VW reads this because I am not the only one that feels this way. Their Engineers have lost there way in my opinion. Just my take on it. BTW I own a 2012 Turbo Beetle and Love it.

    2 miles per gallon extra??? Wowww! What a waste of engineering. Should have taken it upto 300 BHP and sod the fuel consumption.
