That happens when there's no moral or sense of regret... remember everything that romans and greeks did was because the gods make them did it. The guilt came with christianity before that western civilization doesn't have that feeling. They blame the gods and everything was find... so is easy being that way when you don't feel sorry for anything.

I love how they guess at history. They are most often incorrect with every prediction. In little Yellowstone the Museum had on display (for a number of years) an early sex toy. Because it had three carved rings and a tapered hole; the Seattle scientists/ archaeologists said it was not merely an early female sex toy, but the three rings and the hole suggested it was for deflowering virgins. It took an old farmer to walk in and explain that what they really had was an old tap for a wine barrel. They had to remove the display.

Re Slave sex: I knew an old lady. She told me that one of her neighbours in Canada (Winnipeg) was basically a slave. She was allowed out of the house with money. To buy groceries. Every penny was checked. He would go on yearly vacations to warm places. She was left behind. He kept track of the bills.
She outlived him. The lady I knew helped her handle the bills and basic money management after he died. Freedom. She'd never had its hole married.
    Slavery can happen anywhere.
Didn't the Romans drink out of lead cups? That could explain a lot of mental breakdown. At least they had the aqueducts to bring water into the city. Probably the reason they were able to conquer so much of the known world: they had a leg up in everyone else because they had better access to "safer" water.

In addition the practice of freeing slaves was the norm and their kids would receive citizenship.
Many went on to make fortunes and did well enough to have the fact reported in historiography, normally citing their lack of taste as "new rich".

Saying Rome ran on slavery is wrong since 85-88% of the population of the Republic and Empire were not slaves. Half the slaves worked in many trades as tied labor and as domestics, teachers, doctors...and the rest on farms or estates. Owning a slave(s) was like owning a high end car. Industrialization and domestic appliances make slavery pointless unless you live in some parts of the world like Saudi Arabia.

Its categorized as a mental illness, classified as pedophilia, in today's society. We are a product of our culture, as another commenter said. The legal age was 12, still, we see it as unacceptable but back then it was okay and, probably, most likely, normal.

I totally agree, finally some common sense & honesty. It's so nauseatingly ridiculous to try to excuse Rome's horrible history by simply pointing out that everybody else was doing it too. Pedophilia, slavery, corruption, murder, oppression, etc. are just plain wrong no matter who, how, where or when it took place. Even in the ancient world, plenty of people were against these disgusting vices. Many died fighting against the Romans because it was offensive to human dignity & freedom. Sadly there are many idiotic Roman fanboys who can't seem to grasp this simple concept.

The virgins were off limits to all Roman men. As is evident by looking at Roman history, emperors often ignored such rules. Elagabalus, for instance, married a Vestal Virgin in an attempt to produce divine children. It didn't help his reputation any.
Faustina, the wife of emperor Marcus Aurelius, who was so aroused by gladiators her husband consulted a soothsayer about the situation. This oracle suggested Faustina have sex with a gladiator (she did), and that the gladiator in question be killed on top of her and that she bathe in his blood to satisfy, and cleanse herself of, her lust (this happened). She then had sex with Marcus Aurelius immediately afterward.

Beastiality was not only a favorite practice, but a popular form of public entertainment. Companies would train animals and human slaves to have sex with each other. The acts would be done as openers for gladiator combat and such. The animals included horses, zebras and even giraffes.

I've read some Roman writings they never dare touch upon, even in these videos about how decadent the Romans were. They were actually ten times worse. In cruelty and perversion, they had no peers. Simply abominable acts were commonplace. Whatever you were into, you could do, as long as you didn't anger someone powerful.
