The first string -crossing you did that was legato - I was told at a young age that this was called "bariolage". Then when I was 20-something years old I was told bariolage is something completely different. Even with ricochet, the movement of the bow across four strings... would you just call it "rapid string crossing"?
Hi Liam, yes you are correct " bariolage" has to do with playing with different tone colours simultaneously , often involving an open string. However "fast ricochet" over many different strings is different than "rapid string crossings", as ricochet is off-the string stroke and fast string crossings could be on - or off - the string strokes. Another different point would be that ricochet is played with multiple notes in the same bow direction whereas fast string crossings can be played with the same bow direction or also with separated bows. In this particular excerpt of Mendelssohn concerto the bow stroke starts as fast string crossing with legato (on the string stroke) then changes into ricochet in faster tempo with off- the string stroke.
