    • Bass Fishing Offshore ...
    I'm hoping that this will answer some of the questions you guys have had about finding and catching bass on offshore structure. There are lots of ways to catch them, but here I show a few of my favorite techniques that I have caught fish on at a variety of lakes. If you have a big high dollar graph or a small cheapo, learning what fish look like on your electronics is critical for knowing if you are in the right place to catch fish.
    If you are having trouble understanding what you are staring at on your graph, I recommend taking a day and studying your graph, and stopping to fish when you think you see some good cover, structure, of fish. That is the best way to learn how to translate what is on the graph to what you feel underwater.

    I actually do use the same rod a lot of times for both. I really like the Dobyns 784 extreme, I can really cast a long ways with the c rig and the flutter spoon with those and it is easier to take up more line on the hook sets with the longer rod

  • @scottcrumpler4028

    Great video and very informative. That last bass with the hook coming out of it is proof that catch & release works and that sometimes it is better to cut the line on a gut-hooked bass rather than to try to wrench the hook out and tear up its stomach. As long as the hook has no stainless steel weed guard (and no SS in the hook itself), the bass has a very high probability of being able to pass or digest the hook. In those cases, cut the line as close to the hook as you can without injuring the bass further, and throw him back. It can be his best shot at surviving a gut-hook situation-- and that bass was proof. He lived to be caught and released again!

    I'm letting out line to let the lure drop more straight down rather than swing in towards me on that long cast.

    Those fish can be tough to catch, but I like to use a 5" or 6" flutter spoon, a Storm Wildeye swimbait, a 3/4 or 1oz white jig, or an A Rig. If they are sticking to one spot on a hump or offshore point and there isn't much bait around I will also get right on top of them and drop a drop shot down to where I see them and shake it in front of them.

    That's a good place to start looking for deeper fish but it's not the magic depth by any means. I have caught bass out to 45-50 foot before. It just depends on where the oxygen levels and the baitfish and hanging out. It could be as shallow as 10-15. I like to look at my graph for signs of life, if you look closely you will find groups of plankton and baitfish in certain depths

    I live here on lake marion in santee sc and have guys coming by fishing near my dock everyday... catching very little... I tell them that 95 percent of the fish are behind them... but that just shake their head... because they dont know what to do..... they should watch this video... its a great one... keep them coming.

    I like how your using different baits in the same spot. Looks pretty windy to. Curious what water temps and clarity are. i would like to see more video on the spoon. Never had any luck with those.

    just got an ascend kayak, and went to a local lake where the water is only 4 to 5 feet in the deepest spot. weeds and alge grow to the surface of the water all around the lake and the edges of the lake are lily pads. caught a 6 pounder here. My next trip will be in deeper water and your videos have given me some very good tips. great vids and awesome fishing!

  • @LakeForkGuy
    @LakeForkGuy  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, pretty much the same as a crig rod. I like to use something over 7'6" foot with a fast tip and medium heavy action. Dobyns Extreme 784 what i use most of the time

  • @LakeForkGuy
    @LakeForkGuy  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like at least a 7 foot med/heavy rod, my choice is a Dobyns 784 champion extreme for flutter spoons. Then deepinding on water clarity, I will throw 15-20lb copolymer line. I like a little stretch so I won't snatch it away from the fish.

    I do like to use flukes in deep water, one of my first experiences of catching lots of bass off one deep spot was with a C rig fluke. A later found a bait called the Magic Shad by Lake Fork Trophy lures that has a different fall than a fluke. It's great in the post spawn

    @LakeForkGuy  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    On the big 4"+ spoons I like a rod that is a little longer than 7'. My favorite rod is a 7'8" rod made by Dobyns. More distance, easier to cast and work that big spoon and take up the line when they smash it. 15-20lb fluoro

  • @LakeForkGuy
    @LakeForkGuy  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can either put in right on top of where you see them( this will scare fish off sometimes) or you can put it off to one side. I usually idle past the fish a few boats lengths and then toss it. Just remember the angle you came in at and try to use other visual cues if there are other objects around

    You don't have to use a baitcaster to catch fish but they have more leverage and take up line faster than spinner rods as well as hold larger line diameters. For someone starting out, adjust your brakes on your reel to the max setting and practice casting until you get the feel for when to release your thumb off the reel when you cast. For an overhand cast, you should be letting your thumb off about when you reach the 2 olcock position with your rod.

    This has got to be the best video I have found on offshore structure. Would like to see a follow up video on a bit more of the electronics, and how to interpret it. Of course following up with actually catching the fish is what maeks this video so good. Keep up the good work!

  • @LakeForkGuy
    @LakeForkGuy  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    you can find fish with any graph, the more expensive ones just make it a little easier. I always tell people that getting to know YOUR electronics is the most important thing. If you know how to read everything on what particular unit you are using, then you are good to go.
