I actually do use the same rod a lot of times for both. I really like the Dobyns 784 extreme, I can really cast a long ways with the c rig and the flutter spoon with those and it is easier to take up more line on the hook sets with the longer rod
Great video and very informative. That last bass with the hook coming out of it is proof that catch & release works and that sometimes it is better to cut the line on a gut-hooked bass rather than to try to wrench the hook out and tear up its stomach. As long as the hook has no stainless steel weed guard (and no SS in the hook itself), the bass has a very high probability of being able to pass or digest the hook. In those cases, cut the line as close to the hook as you can without injuring the bass further, and throw him back. It can be his best shot at surviving a gut-hook situation-- and that bass was proof. He lived to be caught and released again!
Those fish can be tough to catch, but I like to use a 5" or 6" flutter spoon, a Storm Wildeye swimbait, a 3/4 or 1oz white jig, or an A Rig. If they are sticking to one spot on a hump or offshore point and there isn't much bait around I will also get right on top of them and drop a drop shot down to where I see them and shake it in front of them.
Yes, pretty much the same as a crig rod. I like to use something over 7'6" foot with a fast tip and medium heavy action. Dobyns Extreme 784 what i use most of the time
That's a good place to start looking for deeper fish but it's not the magic depth by any means. I have caught bass out to 45-50 foot before. It just depends on where the oxygen levels and the baitfish and hanging out. It could be as shallow as 10-15. I like to look at my graph for signs of life, if you look closely you will find groups of plankton and baitfish in certain depths
This has got to be the best video I have found on offshore structure. Would like to see a follow up video on a bit more of the electronics, and how to interpret it. Of course following up with actually catching the fish is what maeks this video so good. Keep up the good work!
just got an ascend kayak, and went to a local lake where the water is only 4 to 5 feet in the deepest spot. weeds and alge grow to the surface of the water all around the lake and the edges of the lake are lily pads. caught a 6 pounder here. My next trip will be in deeper water and your videos have given me some very good tips. great vids and awesome fishing!
I watch your channel all the time you are so young in this video but I had to do a search for a deep water fishing and yours was the first one of them thank you Justin
You can either put in right on top of where you see them( this will scare fish off sometimes) or you can put it off to one side. I usually idle past the fish a few boats lengths and then toss it. Just remember the angle you came in at and try to use other visual cues if there are other objects around
I like at least a 7 foot med/heavy rod, my choice is a Dobyns 784 champion extreme for flutter spoons. Then deepinding on water clarity, I will throw 15-20lb copolymer line. I like a little stretch so I won't snatch it away from the fish.
You don't have to use a baitcaster to catch fish but they have more leverage and take up line faster than spinner rods as well as hold larger line diameters. For someone starting out, adjust your brakes on your reel to the max setting and practice casting until you get the feel for when to release your thumb off the reel when you cast. For an overhand cast, you should be letting your thumb off about when you reach the 2 olcock position with your rod.
On the big 4"+ spoons I like a rod that is a little longer than 7'. My favorite rod is a 7'8" rod made by Dobyns. More distance, easier to cast and work that big spoon and take up the line when they smash it. 15-20lb fluoro
I like how your using different baits in the same spot. Looks pretty windy to. Curious what water temps and clarity are. i would like to see more video on the spoon. Never had any luck with those. Good job! You really seem to be having a great time.
Man I have been fishing since I was a youngin and I've never seen anyone fish like you. I'm 14 and you are defensively my role model. I went out to fork 3 weeks ago and caught my pr at 7 pounds on a drop shot. Love the vids, you inspire me so thanks brother. GIGEM DAMMIT!!
I live here on lake marion in santee sc and have guys coming by fishing near my dock everyday... catching very little... I tell them that 95 percent of the fish are behind them... but that just shake their head... because they dont know what to do..... they should watch this video... its a great one... keep them coming.
I subscribed because of this video....very very well done...loved that you showed the contour lines of what you were fishing and examples...prolly took a little bit of work to put this video together but worth it....more videos like this please!
You really should have you own fishing show on TV. Maybe you and the G-man. I would really like to see you come down here to south Louisiana and get into some trout and redfish action! Keep up the nice work!
I do like to use flukes in deep water, one of my first experiences of catching lots of bass off one deep spot was with a C rig fluke. A later found a bait called the Magic Shad by Lake Fork Trophy lures that has a different fall than a fluke. It's great in the post spawn
This video pretty much helped me alot knowledge wise for deep lake fishing. Been out of the game for 8+ years and relearning and learning new things. Also different from Bass Peacock that I was use to in Miami compared to Texas. Thanks for making the videos.
Just listened to hook and arrow pod cast about catching big bass and then 4 year old gem popped on my TH-cam. I too shall now join the share lunker hunt. Just grabbed me some big spoons from tacklewarehouse. Good video. You crack me up
you can find fish with any graph, the more expensive ones just make it a little easier. I always tell people that getting to know YOUR electronics is the most important thing. If you know how to read everything on what particular unit you are using, then you are good to go.
I fish at briery creek farmville va. And every cast has the possibility of catching a bass of a lifetime. Also a heavily pressured fishery. Love the info on a brand new style of fishing.going now to try. Thanx 👍👍
This really helps me!! I have been getting into this off shore fishing kick. Mainly cause I just want to catch bigger fish on Loudoun.. Awesome vid, Thanks again for the info!!!
great video. I fish a a lake that is generally regarded as a shallow water lake, but i am going to take these tactics to the water and see what happens!
Justin, dude you sure make this Polar Vortex alot more painful (in a good way!) I'am changing my tactics this year for my tournament fishing. I'm going to target deep offshore structure w/football heads. This video puts forth alot of good information to help. Keep putting these great vids up! Tks man.
LakeForkGuy Justin, I'm over here on the east coast (MD). I tournament fish a 1500acre man-made reservoir (Prettyboy, GOOGLE Earth if you have a chance?). It's very deep right off the shoreline, no grass, very little offshore structure due to 100yrs of sediment. Could you suggest some ways that I would go about targeting offshore bass and what to look for? I have decent electonics-Hbird 998. Tks in advance.
I love how did you are in this video is awesome I'm learning deep water fishing and I've come across a few schools but you are definitely in a good one I love it have a great one you did an awesome job explain things man thanks so much for the video keep up the good work love it
Are the angles on your cast important at times after you drop your marker. I saw how your boat was positioned at times with that standing timber to your left?
+Larry White I'm trying to figure out the deep bite too, a little early right now in central tx. I think differing angles would help since some bass like to suspend in schools facing different directions
Love videos like these please do more! I would like to suggest to show all your equipment including rod and lures! I'm new to fishing so I have no idea what you say when you talk about other stuff
oh my gosh man you're hilarious! definitely learned a lot and had a great laugh the whole time. he had a hook coming out of his *bleeeeeep* hahaha. good vid man. I like to watch your old videos when there isn't any new ones i haven't seen.
I love the double screen on your fish finder. Same brand name as mine but probably different model? I would love to have a map on my finder, instead of the paper one.
I'd love to see you do a video on winter deep water fishing. What baits do you use? How do you change your presentation and do the fish use different deep water haunts than in summer?
winter fishing is a lot slower presentation. when water temps get about 58* and under bass are very lethargic. this is when you want to transition to jigs ....slow...slow...slow
great video, I would like to see more graph reading, different time of year, and different water clarity on your next one. hopefully we will see more to come. as far as releasing of the fish I see no problem, their not gently brought in so no need to gently release they be alright.
Great video. Could you go in to depth on off shore fishing on deep lakes that most points are steep drop offs? I know the bigger fish are deep because I can see them on the graph, but can’t seem to catch them. Our lake is extremely overfished for its size as well so deep offshore fishing is critical for big ones.
what an awesome instructional video. Thanks for making this. I've always wanted to learn to fish deep. when you drop the water buoy do you drop it the moment you see the school of fish? I'm assuming that dropping the buoy on top of them doesn't "spook" them?
good video......glad you shared the knowledge with us........keep your lines tight......fish on....and keep setting those hogs loose so others can enjoy fishing for them.
Hey man, enjoying trying to learn to fish deeper. Up here in western PA, I fish a lot of lakes that are up to 20-25 feet. Just starting Carolina Rigging the ring fry! Hope you're doing well man, beat the crap out of that tumor bro!
I really like your videos and I'm really new to fishing. Could you do one where you go through a lot of set ups like Carolina rig, Texas rig, etc. thanks
Great video... Much needed info... Just a quick question are a pro and if so how did you get started.. Because I'm looking to try fish professionally and see where it might take me
Very informative video. Any deep water tips are greatly appreciated. would you change anything about these baits if the fish were in 40-50 ft of water instead 25?
lol....loved the song at the end...only laughing cause I didnt expect it....great info on off shore deep fishing....I have a hard time knowing when to set the hook on a football rig....I can feel the bite but fish never there....I feel the bump bump and reel down and set the hook, what am I doing wrong...got to where I dont want to fish it at all.....great video thanks for sharing.
I had the same problem when I started fishing jigs... was getting so aggravated ! What I started to do was instead of having the slack in my line waiting for the bump I would basically have my line tight all the time but still on the bottom, and when I felt the bump I didn't reel down I just jerked straight up and try to jam that hook in the top of mouth HARD. I still miss some but I have begun to catch more and more over the years doing this.. I feel like while I was reeling down to them they were dropping the lure.. I was missing my window
Great video. When u drop the buoy, does that position your boat? And then the fish is relevant to boat position... or are you actually marking the fish? Thank you!
Lots of time fishing great, good helpful tips, try to mention the names of the lakes these fish are being caught in, also appreciate the catch and release attitude.
Bring back the oldies!!!! Crackin big ones, showing techniques. No challenges, no show business. Just straight fishing the moment.
Yeah you did great on that one I want to do that but I have not figured out how but I will
I actually do use the same rod a lot of times for both. I really like the Dobyns 784 extreme, I can really cast a long ways with the c rig and the flutter spoon with those and it is easier to take up more line on the hook sets with the longer rod
Watching this in 2020 my guy. Dude you’ve been a 🐐 salute to you dude and I definitely caught that solo at the end😂
Great video and very informative. That last bass with the hook coming out of it is proof that catch & release works and that sometimes it is better to cut the line on a gut-hooked bass rather than to try to wrench the hook out and tear up its stomach. Your deep water videos really help me out. offshore is my weak point and i can use all the help i can get.
Justin has great touch and a good nose for the fish and setting the hook. It is a joy to watch this young man kick bass.
I'm letting out line to let the lure drop more straight down rather than swing in towards me on that long cast.
You by far have the best video's on youtube. Information and the delivery are just perfect.
Yes, pretty much the same as a crig rod. I like to use something over 7'6" foot with a fast tip and medium heavy action. Dobyns Extreme 784 what i use most of the time
Best video I've seen on the use of the electronics, deepwater fishing and just over all personality of this angler. Thanks. I Liked and subscribing...

Going back in the old vids for some knowledge thanks for all you do buddy hope you guys are staying safe with all this mess going on in the world.
Just got a bass boat, needed some advice on this exact type of fishing. Your videos are great, keep them coming!
One of the most informational videos on bass fishing ever seen. Thankyou

@duckman399 I have, the work pretty well on those deeper schools but it gets hung up a lot around the deep trees
You don't have to use a baitcaster to catch fish but they have more leverage and take up line faster than spinner rods as well as hold larger line diameters. Absolutely just what I needed. I'm learning deep water fishing and this just explained it perfectly. Thanks so much.
Congrats and thanks for watching!
great video. deep water is not my comfort zone. hoping this helps me find fish deep this season.
neither is it my "comfort zone" the "pressure" is too much.
wow, you should do more videos like this, this is the most informative fishing videos Ive seen in a while...

Great info brother . Been watching you for years love these type videos
this video is way more helpful then most other deep fishing vids ive seen
Thx brother you definitely opened my eyed to alot of info i needed. Never used a flutter spoon but im goin to losd up on them asap

@tracyclark002 I just drag it until I hit some cover and then shake it or hop it like a craw. Ring fry on the c rig
I love how did you are in this video is awesome I'm learning deep water fishing and I've come across a few schools but you are definitely in a good one I love it have a great one you did an awesome job explain things man thanks so much for the video keep up the good work love it
Great info, I'm on lay lake and have stared using your techniques and tips. Do more on where to start looking for those humps and ledges, keep it up 👍
Flutter down to the bottom.....lol! Love this channel Justin!
You are a master of your craft. I have learned allot from your vids! Thank you!
I wish you still did videos like this.
This was extremely helpful for me I'm trying to get better fishing deep offshore. It can be intimidating at times when your just getting into it.
That's what I'm here for, thanks for watching and glad it helped!

That backlash tactic is deadly. Works everytime!
@stevennieto91 I normally use fluoro on the spoons but if I used braid, I would probably use 20-30 lb no leader
Looks easy when you have electronics with screens that big. :P - Great video!!
oh my gosh man you're hilarious! definitely learned a lot and had a great laugh the whole time. he had a hook coming out of his *bleeeeeep* hahaha. good vid man. I like to watch your old videos when there isn't any new ones i haven't seen.
I wish you would do more teaching videos like this one. DO MORE OF THIS IN 2018 PLEASE!!!
@jfishhall I will break out the crank if I can reach the cover like some gravel or brush piles less than 20'
Great vid. I just recently bought a new Elite 7 TI2 and hoping to get into the deep water structure fishing.
Good video and good job on the different baits in deep water.
Great video man. Planning a trip to Fork next year for my annual fishing trip.
Love your enthusiasm. Gonna try the flutterspoon and do some deep bassin'
Its easy to watch all 20 minutes of this. Good shit haha
@DAMITBANDIT The 5". I typically stick to the 4 and 5
Thanks for the tips, I’ve yet to figure out the whole deep water thing so I’m pretty much stuck to early morning fishing in the summer
man your awesome this vid is really helpful for someone like me just starting this off shore game!
There is a weight that attaches to the string to it does not float away
Love your videos. Great information. Always learn something new. Thanks
I love the double screen on your fish finder. Same brand name as mine but probably different model? I would love to have a map on my finder, instead of the paper one.
what a great video. What about using your side imaging? Will you make a video about it, it would be great.
I'd love to see you do a video on winter deep water fishing. What baits do you use? How do you change your presentation and do the fish use different deep water haunts than in summer?

I learn about thermocline concept from you. Thats good man.
good video bud, what mic and video gear are you using?
Wow, nice fishin'. You really found a good spot there. Thanks for the tips :)
I like to make a waypoint and then throw a buoy out somewhere past or to the side of where the spot is I want to fish.
Amazing video I’m learning and can’t wait use these techniques!
Justin, great video!! I'm new to Deepwater bassin. What color jig and trailer and what color worm for Carolina should be used. Thank you!! Gary

hahaha, I like your little one liners when you hook a fish. "he did it, he went and hit that jig".
what an awesome instructional video. Thanks for making this. I've always wanted to learn to fish deep. when you drop the water buoy do you drop it the moment you see the school of fish? I'm assuming that dropping the buoy on top of them doesn't "spook" them?
I'd really appreciate more on using the 2d sonar and the downscan to find these type fish. Thanks - I really like your videos.
fun video! all 20 minutes.. thanks! I'm just learning to hunt bass, and in deeper waters up here in the NW... subbed.. :)
good video......glad you shared the knowledge with us........keep your lines tight......fish on....and keep setting those hogs loose so others can enjoy fishing for them.
Could you do one where you go through a lot of set ups like Carolina rig, Texas rig, etc.
thanks
@MamasBoy930 Lol, dont forget 360 imaging! That's a negative
I learned lots man! Thanks
I will use these tactics when I get out on the water :)
Great video... Much needed info... Just a quick question are a pro and if so how did you get started.. Because I'm looking to try fish professionally and see where it might take me
Just made it up, I tend to do that when I'm fishing sometimes
Thanks man love this video! Going to use this Saturday!

Lots of time fishing great, good helpful tips, try to mention the names of the lakes these fish are being caught in, also appreciate the catch and release attitude.
