They don’t really do series anymore. They do sonic, mario, and Zelda games. Then if a new game comes out they play it for 5-6 episodes. They do that because they see that views drop off around episode 5.
somewhat entertainment Mario Maker doesn't require paying attention to any kind of story or w/e and has more opportunities for rage/humour and that kind of stuff. These types of games usually just don't lend themselves very well to the GG formula.
I think he was making fun of it for the same reason videogame dunkey made fun of the Arkham games where you can literally just keep tapping a single button to defeat many/most enemies.
Not saying it’s bad, but it seems similar to JonTron’s criticism of Aquaman: there are so many combos with so many buttons but the standard attack gets so much done. Similarly, the Castlevania IV criticism Arin had, where they had situations meant for the trove of specialties but the standard whip was just as good or better. I will say that they’re cutting it close on some of these fights so switching it up will reveal itself to be necessary as the difficulty rises.

I can't wait for him to complain about the controls and shit when he literally started ignoring the tutorial and the very first mission within seconds of the game handing him the controls for the first time. Like, I love these guys, but I literally just went back and checked how long it took. When Arin starts ignoring the tutorial within 12 seconds of being handed the controls (if anyone wants to check, he gets control at 3:33), it makes me very concerned. He enjoyed being Spider-Man as intended for 12 seconds before standing on cars and gradually walking out of the mission area. I wouldn't be saying this if he did this at any point after the first mission ended. But he started being stupid and refusing to play the game within 12 goddamn seconds. All I wanted was for them to do like a normal-length episode worth of gameplay before Arin started doing this so he wouldn't give up in 5 episodes because "I don't know what to do! This is so hard! This game is so bad!" I really hope Arin proves me wrong and makes me look like a gigantic asshole. I seriously do, more than anything. This game is so fantastic and I think they'd enjoy it as long as they pay attention enough during missions to know what they are doing before going back to fucking around.

Well in fairness he's addressing the fact he can spam square and still win, and that all the controls are sort of given to you as instructions one after the other instead of having time to learn and get used to each ability
Yet if the game just taught him so much stuff over a long period of time, he would complain that the game doesn't let you do everything right off the bat and that it makes it too restrictive.
But thats you just projecting what he might do, i think you just have an issue with Arin yourself. Game design is a fine balance, games can be restrictive and games can be overwhelming, it's hard to get into that Goldilocks zone, theres no harm in pointing things like this out, i think its quite interesting to get raw feedback on how someones feeling about a game.

TBH This is just God Of War all over again. Arin isn't a fan of these cinematic/story driven/action games that are coming out more and more as of late. It's kinda disappointing because this game is really fun. He's still funny, but I feel like with these games he should spend like an hour before hand playing them on his own before filming, save time with trying to figure out what to do and how to play, and will also stop everyone (me included) from foaming at the mouth screaming for him to just play the game. In the end, it was us the fans who were the real Game Grumps.
Eeh, it would both help and not. Remember Breath of the Wild, Arin was decent at playing it cause he played at home beforehand, but because of that, he spoiled every thing for Dan and we didn't get the nice reactions most people would've wanted. It really is like a double edged sword.

I'd say it's hard to both play a game and make good commentary; but they've been doing this as a job for almost five years now. If they can't do both to a decent extent by now, they never will.
I do agree on some levels, but it should be known be now that the Grumps are more ahead in commentary than they are gameplay. In all honesty, I don't know why they would bother to play a big triple-A story game like this if they know they won't get anywhere far in it. I feel like dumb-fun games are more within their line of work.

Wait there’s waypoints in the game? Something that is genuinely useful and allows you to not look at the map multiple times to make sure you get to your destination and also allows you to deviate from your path and still get back on it? Does it also allow you to remember where your going and for all these reasons is incredibly useful? Well it’s in every other spider man gam. Waypoints are one of the key components of open world games. It’s like saying oh there’s combat. Just like every other Zelda game.
You have to remember, his dumbass ludological perspective is pretty much the opposite of this game. I love this game, because I care more about what's happening in it than most brainless Nintendo games.

I love this game, and I'm excited for them to play it, but Arin is the *wrong* member of the team to play it. If he's not paying attention, Dan tends to follow suit, and Dan can't depend on prior knowledge of Spoder-Min (that he doesn't have) to fill in gaps. Dan's at least willing to give things an honest shot on the show without playing in his free time, so it'd give some hope that they'd get somewhere in the game without pulling teeth or tons of complaining. Doesn't listen to the mission prompt, wonders how Pete knows what he's doing. This... Is gonna be frustrating.
I don't necessarily mind them not paying attention, but the fact that Arin says with such authority, "How does he know it's Fisk?!" like there's no possible way that information could have come up earlier, is what kills me.

A bunch of little moments tend to stack up because Arin isn't paying much attention to what's on screen or coming out of the speakers, and before you know it, he's frustrated and blaming the game for it or sarcastically blaming how stupid he must be for not getting something. Real frustration is entertaining. Easily avoided, authoritative badgering is draining to watch. He might do that, he might not. His track record isn't the greatest in that regard.
"Next time on Game Grups, we'll play this for 6 more episodes and never touch it again!" I love these guys but I just Arin to really try at this game and play it through to its fullest, or at least the main missions and leave side quests off camera, i think if actually continued Arin would enjoy it and of course Dan would fall in love with it. Its the same issue I had with God of War, such an incredible game that they wont fully experience. That's just my 2 cents and i know some people wont agree with me, and i really hope people watch this series so they have enough incentive to continue it.
Well I'm 90% sure Sony is paying them for this playthrough like they did for GoW (Arin acknowledged that much for GoW in a different series and talked about how he hated it). Arin just doesn't seem to like this genre of game (3d brawler would probably be the best classification?). Or maybe even it isn't that, since he is playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma and seems to be enjoying it and played Bayonetta as well. It seems to be more towards first/second party titles by Sony or Microsoft in general, since he basically never chooses to play any of those. What annoyed me for this video is what annoyed me for GoW, and that is that you can immediately tell Arin is phoning it in and doesn't actually give a shit.

It was a new direction for the series and it made a ton of changes from the original while also keeping the core aspects and bringing some past stories with it. I loved the story, gameplay, the open world was fun (though I didn't play much after beating the main story), and the new characters were intriguing enough. I was super skeptical because the original trilogy is one of my favorite game series of all time but it surpassed all if my expectations. Its a great game imo.

I like how Arin got mad that there was a waypoint telling him where to go, as if Arin was going to find it on his own in Manhattan and the game took that from him, despite the fact he wasn't even paying attention so he had no idea what he was doing to begin with. I can already tell this is going to be a frustrating play through.
Selecko Exactly! He talked about how you didn’t need to set waypoints in BOTW and he loved that but still ended up relying on them. If he wasn’t complaining, he would’ve seen cool details like the helicopters and police cars leading him to the scene.

All you do in that game and dark souls too is roll anyway. Why is it a problem when he uses an OP move to beat a really hard game? It honestly isn't even that overpowered, either!! He can't use it against bosses, so he just uses it to help him not die so often during the fodder of the game.

I think some people in the comments don't quite understand what people are mad about here. We aren't mad because Arin isn't foaming at the mouth with excitement over this game, he can mock certain things, he can make jokes, call out perceived flaws, no game is perfect. The problem is his tone and his way of playing that turns people off of this video. From the minute this video started I got the vibe that Arin gave no shits about this game from minute 1. He seems entirely focused on his own jokes and doesn't seem to care about the game at all which is annoying for most people. He also is ignoring dialogue and then starts mocking the game for shit it already explained. "How does he know its Fisk?" Because literally 2 seconds in the game it showed that the police were after Fisk and Peter was eager to take him down. Its one thing to mock an actual flaw with the story or gameplay if its valid but acting like something stupid happened when it didn't just makes you look like a dumbass. I don't speak for everyone obviously so if someone has different qualms with this video feel free to correct me, but from what I gathered from the comments and my own viewing, the problem isn't that he doesn't care enough, the problem is he doesn't seem to care at all and I see people going "Well he's the Grump, its Game Grumps", okay, and the other half is GAME, so shouldn't the game also be in focus along with the grumpiness instead of Arin just fucking around and ignoring everything? Not really, one of my favorite lps of theirs was when they played the PUnch Out games. They both clearly cared about the game and paid attention to it, making great jokes along with playing the game in an enjoyable manner as opposed to this video where they make jokes at the expense of the game and don't seem to care at all. I fell in love with the channel when they seemed really interested in the game and wanted to play it, shit in this video is a new and unwelcome change because it seems like they'd rather be somewhere else and that feeling is contagious, making me feel like I'd rather be somewhere else than watching their content.
LET DAN PLAY PLEASE I really loved this game when I first got it, and I like to see other people and their experience with it so I'd like to keep watching. But just hearing arin complain about stuff that could be solved by simple listening and paying attention and just ignoring the game (standing on the car) will kill the mood and the gameplay, just like with skyward sword. Dan seems to like the game, so I don't know, maybe he would actually have something to say about it? Maybe he'll actually pay attention, and learn about it, see that it's not that complicated?
Can we just let Danny play these types of games? He seems like he goes into them with a way more open mind and Arin just goes in and insults it and makes complaints that don't make sense. You don't need to like anything but if you're going to go into any new mainstream game with that attitude then you know fine well it isn't fun to watch. I really hoped to watch this and get what I usually get from Game Grumps and maybe have them talk about comic books or something and maybe it could have been something fun, but the energy is just way off. Danny to his credit has gone in like he does with anything else but Arin has gone in with a tone that sounds like a friend from school is forcing him to look at his Sonic fanart or something. Have any opinion you'd like on the game, it can be fun seeing Arin dislike a game, but the energy is just fucked this entire episode.
Incredible. A team of amazing, experienced game devs can create a ridiculously intuitive method of webswinging around a full-scale New York, and Arin manages to fuck up literally three swings in and waste a full minute and a half standing around.
I've never gotten actually mad at Arin's unfounded and biased snarkiness against modern gaming... until now. This game is super well designed and this tutorial level is damn near perfect. It teaches you everything you need to know with remarkably little hand holding. It tells you the very basics and let's you figure out the rest yourself through gameplay and experimentation. Yeah... I think I'll pass on this series. And yes, I know that's Arin's thing. I'm not new here. I don't hold it against him or anything. Rather than make a huge deal out of it I'll express my disagreement and just not watch this particular series. I'll stick with Ninja Gaiden.

On a hand-holding scale of 1-10, this tutorial level is around 8. And let's not mention how the game is nowhere close to being "super well designed". It has ubisoft tower mechanics ffs, and the (repetitive and sometimes trivial) optional quests are bog-standards for an open world game. And personally, the combat just doesn't feel as good as the Arkham games for me. The rhythm just isn't there. Still flashy and fun tho. I do agree that they've done the traversing to be so simple and yet also super fun, and Insomniac has perfected the boss fights designs that older spiderman and whatever freerunning-with-superpower game devs has thought of in the past. So hats off to them for that. But please, stop saying like this game is the 2nd coming of Christ. It's really not.

I adore that the game set up this great feel of flow and freedom. Making the intro of the game have movement, and then Arin IMMEDIATELY stops everything abruptly to say hi to strangers for a few mins.
Egoraptor and Arin are different people. Egoraptor gushes about minute details in games. He is observant and willing to experiment. Arin doesn't know what games are.
For games like this they really need to just let dan play. Arin’s commentary is cynical but still funny. But the way he plays this games in infuriating to watch. This game looks so much better and is more entertaining to watch when somebody plays it like they want to be there.

Asher Mack honestly I love Aron and dan but they need to take some time lately in everything he has been playing including skyward sword and as far back as Mario odyssey he just seems depressed annoyed and miserable, and that in turn affects Sam to make him the same way damaging the quality of the video, compare the energy from a game grumps vid form 2013-15 and compare to like skyward sword episode 4

They don’t really do series anymore. They do sonic, mario, and Zelda games. Then if a new game comes out they play it for 5-6 episodes. They do that because they see that views drop off around episode 5.
somewhat entertainment Mario Maker doesn't require paying attention to any kind of story or w/e and has more opportunities for rage/humour and that kind of stuff. These types of games usually just don't lend themselves very well to the GG formula.

I think he was making fun of it for the same reason videogame dunkey made fun of the Arkham games where you can literally just keep tapping a single button to defeat many/most enemies.
Not saying it’s bad, but it seems similar to JonTron’s criticism of Aquaman: there are so many combos with so many buttons but the standard attack gets so much done. Similarly, the Castlevania IV criticism Arin had, where they had situations meant for the trove of specialties but the standard whip was just as good or better.
I will say that they’re cutting it close on some of these fights so switching it up will reveal itself to be necessary as the difficulty rises.

I can't wait for him to complain about the controls and shit when he literally started ignoring the tutorial and the very first mission within seconds of the game handing him the controls for the first time.
Like, I love these guys, but I literally just went back and checked how long it took. When Arin starts ignoring the tutorial within 12 seconds of being handed the controls (if anyone wants to check, he gets control at 3:33), it makes me very concerned. He enjoyed being Spider-Man as intended for 12 seconds before standing on cars and gradually walking out of the mission area. I wouldn't be saying this if he did this at any point after the first mission ended. But he started being stupid and refusing to play the game within 12 goddamn seconds. All I wanted was for them to do like a normal-length episode worth of gameplay before Arin started doing this so he wouldn't give up in 5 episodes because "I don't know what to do! This is so hard! This game is so bad!"
I really hope Arin proves me wrong and makes me look like a gigantic asshole. I seriously do, more than anything. This game is so fantastic and I think they'd enjoy it as long as they pay attention enough during missions to know what they are doing before going back to fucking around.

Well in fairness he's addressing the fact he can spam square and still win, and that all the controls are sort of given to you as instructions one after the other instead of having time to learn and get used to each ability
Yet if the game just taught him so much stuff over a long period of time, he would complain that the game doesn't let you do everything right off the bat and that it makes it too restrictive.
But thats you just projecting what he might do, i think you just have an issue with Arin yourself.
Game design is a fine balance, games can be restrictive and games can be overwhelming,
it's hard to get into that Goldilocks zone, theres no harm in pointing things like this out,
i think its quite interesting to get raw feedback on how someones feeling about a game.

This is just God Of War all over again. Arin isn't a fan of these cinematic/story driven/action games that are coming out more and more as of late. It's kinda disappointing because this game is really fun. He's still funny, but I feel like with these games he should spend like an hour before hand playing them on his own before filming, save time with trying to figure out what to do and how to play, and will also stop everyone (me included) from foaming at the mouth screaming for him to just play the game.
In the end, it was us the fans who were the real Game Grumps.
Eeh, it would both help and not. Remember Breath of the Wild, Arin was decent at playing it cause he played at home beforehand, but because of that, he spoiled every thing for Dan and we didn't get the nice reactions most people would've wanted. It really is like a double edged sword.

I'd say it's hard to both play a game and make good commentary; but they've been doing this as a job for almost five years now. If they can't do both to a decent extent by now, they never will.
I do agree on some levels, but it should be known be now that the Grumps are more ahead in commentary than they are gameplay. In all honesty, I don't know why they would bother to play a big triple-A story game like this if they know they won't get anywhere far in it. I feel like dumb-fun games are more within their line of work.

Wait there’s waypoints in the game? Something that is genuinely useful and allows you to not look at the map multiple times to make sure you get to your destination and also allows you to deviate from your path and still get back on it? Does it also allow you to remember where your going and for all these reasons is incredibly useful? Well it’s in every other spider man gam. Waypoints are one of the key components of open world games. It’s like saying oh there’s combat. Just like every other Zelda game.

I love this game, and I'm excited for them to play it, but Arin is the *wrong* member of the team to play it. If he's not paying attention, Dan tends to follow suit, and Dan can't depend on prior knowledge of Spoder-Min (that he doesn't have) to fill in gaps. Dan's at least willing to give things an honest shot on the show without playing in his free time, so it'd give some hope that they'd get somewhere in the game without pulling teeth or tons of complaining.

I don't necessarily mind them not paying attention, but the fact that Arin says with such authority, "How does he know it's Fisk?!" like there's no possible way that information could have come up earlier, is what kills me.

A bunch of little moments tend to stack up because Arin isn't paying much attention to what's on screen or coming out of the speakers, and before you know it, he's frustrated and blaming the game for it or sarcastically blaming how stupid he must be for not getting something. Real frustration is entertaining. Easily avoided, authoritative badgering is draining to watch.

I love these guys but I just Arin to really try at this game and play it through to its fullest, or at least the main missions and leave side quests off camera, i think if actually continued Arin would enjoy it and of course Dan would fall in love with it. Its the same issue I had with God of War, such an incredible game that they wont fully experience. That's just my 2 cents and i know some people wont agree with me, and i really hope people watch this series so they have enough incentive to continue it.
Well I'm 90% sure Sony is paying them for this playthrough like they did for GoW (Arin acknowledged that much for GoW in a different series and talked about how he hated it). Arin just doesn't seem to like this genre of game (3d brawler would probably be the best classification?). Or maybe even it isn't that, since he is playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma and seems to be enjoying it and played Bayonetta as well. It seems to be more towards first/second party titles by Sony or Microsoft in general, since he basically never chooses to play any of those.
What annoyed me for this video is what annoyed me for GoW, and that is that you can immediately tell Arin is phoning it in and doesn't actually give a shit.

It was a new direction for the series and it made a ton of changes from the original while also keeping the core aspects and bringing some past stories with it. I loved the story, gameplay, the open world was fun (though I didn't play much after beating the main story), and the new characters were intriguing enough. I was super skeptical because the original trilogy is one of my favorite game series of all time but it surpassed all if my expectations. Its a great game imo.

Don't misunderstand me it's still very possible (and likely) that Arin will suck at this game, I just think the original commenter's jumping the gun by saying Arin is the worst at this game after he's played for literally 5 minutes. I feel like we should wait at least a few episodes before making that claim. Especially since it's within the realm of unlikely possibility that Arin might even get the hang of it and become somewhat good at the game. I just wanna give him the benefit of the doubt.

I can already tell this is going to be a frustrating play through.

Arin says he's hitting square a bunch, but when I go to look at the Bloodborne playthrough, all he chooses to press is R1 WITH THE SAW CLEAVER.
All you do in that game and dark souls too is roll anyway. Why is it a problem when he uses an OP move to beat a really hard game? It honestly isn't even that overpowered, either!! He can't use it against bosses, so he just uses it to help him not die so often during the fodder of the game.

I think some people in the comments don't quite understand what people are mad about here. We aren't mad because Arin isn't foaming at the mouth with excitement over this game, he can mock certain things, he can make jokes, call out perceived flaws, no game is perfect. The problem is his tone and his way of playing that turns people off of this video. From the minute this video started I got the vibe that Arin gave no shits about this game from minute 1. He seems entirely focused on his own jokes and doesn't seem to care about the game at all which is annoying for most people. He also is ignoring dialogue and then starts mocking the game for shit it already explained.
"How does he know its Fisk?" Because literally 2 seconds in the game it showed that the police were after Fisk and Peter was eager to take him down. Its one thing to mock an actual flaw with the story or gameplay if its valid but acting like something stupid happened when it didn't just makes you look like a dumbass.
I don't speak for everyone obviously so if someone has different qualms with this video feel free to correct me, but from what I gathered from the comments and my own viewing, the problem isn't that he doesn't care enough, the problem is he doesn't seem to care at all and I see people going "Well he's the Grump, its Game Grumps", okay, and the other half is GAME, so shouldn't the game also be in focus along with the grumpiness instead of Arin just fucking around and ignoring everything? Not really, one of my favorite lps of theirs was when they played the PUnch Out games. They both clearly cared about the game and paid attention to it, making great jokes along with playing the game in an enjoyable manner as opposed to this video where they make jokes at the expense of the game and don't seem to care at all. I fell in love with the channel when they seemed really interested in the game and wanted to play it, shit in this video is a new and unwelcome change because it seems like they'd rather be somewhere else and that feeling is contagious, making me feel like I'd rather be somewhere else than watching their content.
I remember how people were FURIOUS about this playthrough.
LET DAN PLAY PLEASE I really loved this game when I first got it, and I like to see other people and their experience with it so I'd like to keep watching. But just hearing arin complain about stuff that could be solved by simple listening and paying attention and just ignoring the game (standing on the car) will kill the mood and the gameplay, just like with skyward sword. Dan seems to like the game, so I don't know, maybe he would actually have something to say about it? Maybe he'll actually pay attention, and learn about it, see that it's not that complicated?

Can we just let Danny play these types of games? He seems like he goes into them with a way more open mind and Arin just goes in and insults it and makes complaints that don't make sense. You don't need to like anything but if you're going to go into any new mainstream game with that attitude then you know fine well it isn't fun to watch. I really hoped to watch this and get what I usually get from Game Grumps and maybe have them talk about comic books or something and maybe it could have been something fun, but the energy is just way off. Danny to his credit has gone in like he does with anything else but Arin has gone in with a tone that sounds like a friend from school is forcing him to look at his Sonic fanart or something. Have any opinion you'd like on the game, it can be fun seeing Arin dislike a game, but the energy is just fucked this entire episode.

Incredible. A team of amazing, experienced game devs can create a ridiculously intuitive method of webswinging around a full-scale New York, and Arin manages to fuck up literally three swings in and waste a full minute and a half standing around.

I've never gotten actually mad at Arin's unfounded and biased snarkiness against modern gaming... until now. This game is super well designed and this tutorial level is damn near perfect. It teaches you everything you need to know with remarkably little hand holding. It tells you the very basics and let's you figure out the rest yourself through gameplay and experimentation. Yeah... I think I'll pass on this series.
And yes, I know that's Arin's thing. I'm not new here. I don't hold it against him or anything. Rather than make a huge deal out of it I'll express my disagreement and just not watch this particular series. I'll stick with Ninja Gaiden.

*sigh*. The game literally slows down to a crawl and tells you what buttons to press. On a hand-holding scale of 1-10, this tutorial level is around 8.
And let's not mention how the game is nowhere close to being "super well designed". It has ubisoft tower mechanics ffs, and the (repetitive and sometimes trivial) optional quests are bog-standards for an open world game.
And personally, the combat just doesn't feel as good as the Arkham games for me. The rhythm just isn't there. Still flashy and fun tho.
I do agree that they've done the traversing to be so simple and yet also super fun, and Insomniac has perfected the boss fights designs that older spiderman and whatever freerunning-with-superpower game devs has thought of in the past. So hats off to them for that.
But please, stop saying like this game is the 2nd coming of Christ. It's really not.

I adore that the game set up this great feel of flow and freedom. Making the intro of the game have movement, and then Arin IMMEDIATELY stops everything abruptly to say hi to strangers for a few mins.
