Omg! You have no idea how much I appreciate this video. I just got some Nanoleaf essential matter bulbs. I tried for hours and hours to get them to connect to Google home and Apple home and it wouldn’t work. I googled it and it really didn’t explain it well so I couldn’t get it to work. So I looked it up on TH-cam and I found your video. With your help I was finally able to figure it out and get them working on both platforms. Thank you so much for doing these videos. Very much appreciated!

Can I control my lights with Siri (from my iPhone with my voice) or from my iPhone/iPad/Macbook with the HomeKit App? Also, can 2 people who are living together with their own devices (iPhone/iPad/Macbook) control at the same time and Sync the HomeKit app? Thank you so much! 🙏🏻

Hoping all this gets where I dream of it in the next 5 or so years. Plan to build my retirement home, and I’d like it to matter. Sorry, but seriously, every outlet and switch being smart and thread, compatible with any system I want. Every door hardwired with contact sensors so no battery changes. House takes care of itself so I can enjoy retirement. That’s what I’m looking for. And it’s getting close. Looking forward to the rest of this decade, and planning my retirement home.
Hello, philips hue has now released official matter update'. Any video coming about it? I have high hopes about it, as regards the alexa limitation with one hue bridge. Will matter solve this ? Muliple hue bridges is now possible with alexa with matter update ? Thx
Still trying to understand Matter... but one thing no-one talks about is device updates. Let's say I have aqara windows sensor directly on Samsung Smartthings, or an Ikea led controller on Philips HUE. Will the devices paired on other brands be updated or will it only happens if you have the bridge/hub etc. from each brand?
I hope these are better than the Kasa smart plugs. I am CONSTANTLY having to unplug them and plug them back in because they are not responding. Incredibly frustrating.
I got the Tappo Matter Smart Plug and the setup was smooth just I had the same problem as you did add it to Google Home the device wouldnt work I had to add it to the tappo app (which I was trying to avoid all along) but that got it to work that way I just figured because I had the Google Home preview they are working some kinks out and matter is still very new, IDK
I looked at Amazon's support for adding Matter devices. I see it says nothing about using a QR code. It's kind of vague. I'm guessing you have to do the add device option in the Alexa app. I'm not really surprised.
It is not clear what the device manufacturers agreed on then, if the socket is defined differently in different systems and different properties are available. It is hard to believe in the future of this idea.
Hi. Lets say i have an amazon echo 4th gen that is thread border ready. But i prefer smartthings. Does that mean i can now setup and control echo from smartthings. No ryt ? 😅 Also since matter works in LAN and smartthings is cloud based does that mean when my phone is connected to the home router then i can control devices on my smartthings via LAN and does that mean using my mobile data or outside wifi i cannot control matter via WAN on smartthings ?

I dont get why so many youtubers think it's some kind of magic bullet, it's just yet another standard that companies will abuse until it's as broken as all the others

Ok the standard thing, watching this video it appears that each manufacturer is already messing with it, did each manufacturer just work or was there a different process to connecting to each of them and did they all offer the same features? I have an Echo Show 5 which got Matter support (no thread). I bought a Wiz bulb which just received Matter support. Guess what? Alexa adds the device but says “There is a problem”. It adds as a normal device but has problems over Matter. It also duplicates the device, one normal and one Matter. Smart home!!!

One thing I noticed is that you were adding devices directly to SmartThings or Google, but not into the device app like Kasa. This was preventing you from adding to another service until you found the multi-admin feature. Does Matter take out the need to put the device in the device maker app, like Kasa first? When I add devices to Kasa, it then automatically adds them to the Google Home and SmartThings app, since they were trusted and I have my login with them.

Great video and explanation, it’s worth noting you may have to turn off 5Ghz on your router in order to get the Meross plug to connect. The eve plug is great for Apple Home, thanks for the tip about multi-admin!
Thanks Brandon! I saw chatter about turning off 5Ghz for the Meross plug but it connected just fine with Apple and SmartThings when I tried it so I'm not sure if I was just getting lucky or what.
it will take a while until matter supports most types of devices and we get rid of the old stuff. For sure simple smart plugs are the best type to replace first.
That's a good question, I haven't tried that out yet but I will. My guess is that it doesn't require the first border router to stay online but I could be wrong.
I have been waiting like everyone else for matter to arrive. Amazon haven’t updated the Echo devices with it yet here in the UK,it is supposed to be next month. Great video Reed, keep up the fab work. 👍🏻👍🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

@@SmartHomeSolver It looks like you had been testing the Meross ms115 which is actually Matter over WiFi. I have been able to get this device working directly in Home Assistant as a native Matter device. The only issue I had was I need to set up iPv6 on the host that has HA and I need IPv6 enabled on my network, firewall and router. It shows up as a simple on/off swtich with Smart Plug Mini by Meross Firmware: 9.3.26 Hardware: 9.0. I do not have any Thread devices in my network.
Okay I was wrong, SkyConnect can support Thread and I made a video about it plus testing Matter devices in Home Assistant th-cam.com/video/T_Q2cwTgPd8/w-d-xo.html

Is Matter backwards compatible? Doesn't seem practical to buy all new smart home devices just to get Matter to work. Seems the entire purpose was to make items compatible so we wouldn't need to buy new things
There are existing devices that will get firmware updates to work with Matter. Many of those already work with the majority of systems so I would say Matter applies more to new devices going forward. You don't need to replace your existing devices with Matter ones though.
I use Amazon Alexa, have for years, not sure why I should even care about Matter. I have a multitude of options to choose, great prices, and the Alexa app is so much better than Google Home app or Apple's Home app, which is just god-awful. And, yay, now all Matter devices have a hideous QR Code on them, thanks Apple 🤮

Think one of the biggest disadvantages are for people who already have a ton of perfectly functioning non-Matter devices set up on their smart home eco system. I have over 50 Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Wifi devices all setup in my Smart Home that has been built out over the years. Pretty big financial investment to get it setup the way I have over the years, and really not sure if I want to swap all my devices to Matter now.
Why so nit picky with home kit? That monitoring for Eve plugs was never a feature in HomeKit before. It’s definitely not something I would’ve expected to show up just because it’s working via matter. Matter is what we need and deserve. Matter combined with thread solves the two problems smart homes had. Compatibility and fast reliable communication. I would also realistically expect some bugs, especially now, and I fully expect them to be fixed while seeing more/better functionality.
I think everything worked great with Apple. I was being nit picky about them missing the auto detect feature which is small and not a big deal. Besides that it works great. The Eve plug was not a HomeKit issue but something lacking with Matter right now. SmartThings has the support for energy monitoring in their system so it would have been nice to have that available.
This is really poor start and implementation. Hate when companies realize trash that doesn’t work half baked. I miss Howard Hughes so bad need to clone this man and make him CEO and decision making of all things tech.
@The next Kanzler Watch the video. If you wanted that devices energy use details then you'll need the manufacturers app. If you have 10 brands of devices you will still end up with 10 apps. Matter doesn't matter and has zero value for me.
@@lewiskelly14 Well need is not really true for the basic functions. The Matter CEO was asked when matter was announced: Why only so few devices and functions? He said if they won’t start somewhere they won’t ever start. It’s a evolving standard and that was HomeKit and so on at the start as well.
@1997Banane is right that Matter has to start somewhere. I'm showing the current shortcomings of Matter in the video so you can be aware of them. However, Matter is going to get more features with releases scheduled every quarter I believe. So after some time we will probably get those features added. Getting all the companies to agree how something should work requires a lot of effort and time.

Okay I was wrong, SkyConnect can support Thread and I made a video about it plus testing Matter devices in Home Assistant th-cam.com/video/T_Q2cwTgPd8/w-d-xo.html
honestly beyond like a 900 square foot apartment, thread is not very ideal yet, has a long way to go before its really ready for prime time IMO. have had an epic nightmare with it in my home.
No Home assistant sky connect??? 😭 Not YET anyways 🙃 Mine is set up and ready to go though!
I probably should have included Home Assistant in the video but there was a lot to go over. I just made a full video adding Matter devices to Home Assistant, including Thread devices using SkyConnect. Check it out here th-cam.com/video/T_Q2cwTgPd8/w-d-xo.html
@@SmartHomeSolver haha it’s ok dude! I knew a TON of people would be complaining about home assistant not being in the video and so I had to join in on the fun! Love your content and I appreciate the newer channel as well! Keep up the good work! Your videos are literally what got me to move to Home Assistant. I can’t believe I stayed with smartthings for so many years! I think it’s because it was so bad, I was just defeated and gave up 😂🤣.
Goo 🤣 Well done 👏
FOR that MATTER!
The only thing that "matters" is that all devices sold will work with Apple or Android platforms. Amazon... well, to me who cares as they do not make phones so make your products work with both Apple and Android.
Great video for us Matter noobs!
Cant wait for the matter plugs with the qr code besides the pins, unable to connect it without taking a picture first to scan it once its plugged in
I think most will have an included card with the Matter QR code on it so it's more convienet. But I agree, terrible spot to try and scan on the plug.
What a guy!
I wouldn't describe smart things as rocky. Yes they have been transitioning the back, but my experience has been anything but.
what about home assistant?

Is Matter backwards compatible? Doesn't seem practical to buy all new smart home devices just to get Matter to work. Seems the entire purpose was to make items compatible so we wouldn't need to buy new things
There are existing devices that will get firmware updates to work with Matter. Many of those already work with the majority of systems so I would say Matter applies more to new devices going forward.
You don't need to replace your existing devices with Matter ones though.
I know it doesn't "matter" , but the word matter was mentioned 37 times 😂😂😂
What's a 5 speakers out of 5 speakers when the speaker doesn't exist?
I use Amazon Alexa, have for years, not sure why I should even care about Matter. I have a multitude of options to choose, great prices, and the Alexa app is so much better than Google Home app or Apple's Home app, which is just god-awful. And, yay, now all Matter devices have a hideous QR Code on them, thanks Apple 🤮
Just use the smartthings skill on Alexa the you can use matter with Alexa
I'll stick with zwave and zigbee
Not a Home Assistant fan?

doesn't help that amazon laid off half the alexa team

@@SmartHomeSolver thank you
Think one of the biggest disadvantages are for people who already have a ton of perfectly functioning non-Matter devices set up on their smart home eco system. I have over 50 Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Wifi devices all setup in my Smart Home that has been built out over the years. Pretty big financial investment to get it setup the way I have over the years, and really not sure if I want to swap all my devices to Matter now.
Why would you have to swap everything out? As opposed to just slowly migrating?
@@SethTaylor1 - Whether I switch them quickly or slowly, the point is why would I have to do it at all, if all my current devices are functioning?
@@ONI1013. you don't! Matter works alongside your old devices.
@@SethTaylor1 Understood. But if I don’t need any NEW devices to be added, then what is the incentive to swap any of my old devices?
I have been phasing out all of my Alexa devices anyway.
somebody count how many times he says "matter"
dude, the eyebrows bro
No Apple, no party
We are almost in november and matter is still not implemented at large scale. Its BS as always
This is really poor start and implementation. Hate when companies realize trash that doesn’t work half baked. I miss Howard Hughes so bad need to clone this man and make him CEO and decision making of all things tech.
Bah, "extremely new" is not a legit reason for products, that they're taking money for, to barely work.
Apple is terrible. Getting worse with age.
Amazing video, but the dad of humor at the end was cringe enough to almost make me dislike. Still gave a like. But the feeling was still there.
early 😃
🏆
Miss A and Mr G still use the cloud in the background to register what you bought and how they can send you more advertising, thats why it fails.
The fact you'll still need multiple apps, and now this thread thing... just a last of bollocks to me
You dont?
