No, not really Frisk is helpful but its not necessary. What Frisk does is notify you if a Chinchou is holding a DeepSeaScale but you can still capture Chinchous that have DeepSeaScales without Frisk.

Tip, yanma also has the ability compound eye so u dont need to use butterfree. (It also has frisk as its hidden ability I think)

You shouldn't catch them if the pokemon who has Frisk didn't Frisk a Deep Sea Scale. Only catch the Chinchous when a Deep Sea Scale was frisked
