Why are we doing it Food For Thought.
It’s Brian Travers Birthday on Feb 7th and this song was
Mine and many others introduction to saxophone and reggae music.
1. I personally owe a huge debt of gratitude to Ub40-the first time I heard them as a teenager in 1980 wow the combination of the Campbells brothers Ali and Robin extraordinary voices with that fabulous groove simply blew me away-they became the most successful reggae band of all time selling over 70 million records !
2. Bob Marley No Woman No Cry was then short step behind and there was born my lifelong love of reggae.
the song which has Christmas overtones is in C Sharp minor for alto 4 sharps and f sharp minor for tenor so run up and down the keys -remember too to have the left hand little finger down when you have the right hand down.
3. The Food for thought opening hook by Brian Travers captures you immediately
As it adheres to kiss keep it simple. It can be played on alto or tenor - Brian played it on tenor so I will and he opens it up with a tongued B followed by 2 wahs then f sharp slurred followed by 2 wahs - then a little trill then slurred and 3 more As concluding it with an E.- if you fit and well you can do this in one huge gulp / if you prefer have a sneaky breath after the first F sharp.I tend to play it low first time round
4.then when playing along with Ali’s singing remember the sneaky D No thumb on and you can just get to the first solo after the vocal.
5.Again like the hook line Brian Travers makes an entrance glissing up to the top D and the finale is a slow top D to C sharp trill which overlaps the returning vocal so join back in Second phrase of verse 2.
6.
You have to leave the last vocal phrase The second solo starts on a bottom C sharp running up the scale then the second part is much like the first
7.the final time you play the massive hook go high and for me keep playing it all the way to the end of the track.
8.Enjoy this tune it really is a cracker
The sax features heavily and check out Brian on King and One in 10- the early UB40 albums I truly loved.

Nice sound.
I bought my son a cheap Alto July 2020 thinking I'd be selling it on in no time.
Cut to 4th October 2021 and he's on stage with me playing this song at the Brian Travers Memorial Event at the Hare & Hounds in Brum with a couple of UB members in attendance and hard-core fans. 🎷
