The focus needed for big wave surfing looks so incredibly intense but the stoke released after the ride must be like no other feeling ever!

i’ve surfed/caught waves 12-15ft+ East Coast and 16-18ft plus in Hawaii, where I caught one make at Waimea...the difference in speed and steepness is like twice of tha you’re accustomed. As you know, Island waves usually have a deeper/longer swell period so they’re physically moving faster. East Coast waves of 15-18ft though are no joke, especially if out at a beach break without any channels. I had to get out of the water one day in Hawaii at Sunset Beach as well bc the swell kept getting bigger. Seeing and being out in waves pushing over 20ft faces (8-12ft @ 16 sec) really makes you reevaluate life and what’s important. The speed of the wave works 2 ways, so while more difficult to catch and make the drop, once you’re on the face, you have more speed down the line to use surfing wise. Lastly, the key to big wave survival besides breath and swimming training is having a solid big wave gun, 9’6x20x2 3/4 at least minimum length and thickness...width depends on surfers build and preference with most guns I dont think would be over 23” ...usually guns are 1-1 1/2” wider than standard shortboard, and while a 7’0 will catch a 10ft (20ft face) wave some places, true big wave “spots” really need a 9’0-10ft board with more volume too. Try finding a used semiGun like 6’8-7’0 even for the eastCoast and see how “easy” it makes surfing Hurricane Surf that’s over 10ft faces. it’s definitely a game changer...

the scariest part for me is being caught inside and paddling like crazy as the next monster approaches. When you blast off the curling top to safety as a cliff forms behind you....that's a great feeling.

@@drewfinn2 It depends on the break. I've surfed Bells at 8 foot plus and some of the wide ones actually break off the reef in deep water so the take off was actually not that heavy. Personally I find shallow, hollow waves more scary than big waves that are breaking in deep water. Looking down at a razor sharp Indonesian reef while knowing you are in the developing world is something that will make you think twice about overhead waves.

    • @Nofishnoclue

I think in general with big wave surfing if there is room on the wave and you are not getting in the way or ruining a critical section for someone else then it is fine to share waves

Biggest surf of my life was Puerto Rico on a hurricane. 10ft when we paddled out but every set got bigger and bigger, next thing I know I'm the only guy left in the lineup in 25t+ surf and a crowd of people watching on the beach. I was petrified and thankfully was able to ride the shoulder of a huge set into the beach.
