We’ve reached the point where a 50 megapixel camera on a smartphone can be considered “standard issue”. That’s just incredible to me. Does anyone remember the Nokia Lumia 1020? It’s been over ten years since its release now, but I still remember all the craze and hype around its 41 megapixel camera upon release. Now, a smartphone with a 50 megapixel camera costs a mere $200 USD! It’s incredible how technology continues to advance!
After reading the video title, I thought it would be about all the good things that we miss about older smartphones. And the first thing I was expecting from that was the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone.
@@alattice You should. I moved on from a similar phone to one which has an onscreen fingerprint sensor and now I miss my old phone every time I touch my phone.
Hey marques, if you suffer from eye strain, like i did. What causes brutal eye strain is using your phone or monitor in darkness. Always use a bedside lamp at night. Also need ambient lighting behind your monitor or tv. Watching in total darkness gives painful eye strain. Hopefully this helps a somone.
I've used antiglare screen protectors on my old iPhone before and I remember how everything looked fuzzy and less sharp. It's a cool thing to use for a while but the effect of it will get tiring because you'd be missing out a lot on image quality.
If some company took this and gave it a 1440p, brighter screen I'd fully consider it. For normal everyday use I think this could be really good. The few times I watch video on my phone, it really doesn't have to look perfect or anything otherwise I'd be watching it on a tv or monitor. Maybe it could be annoying as a viewfinder for taking photos and video but tbh as long as it looks decent I'm really not that bothered.
@@mowglimermaid is that a recommendation? Not spending that much for features I don't need and a phone way bigger than I'd like. I'd likely get the s24 or get the FE when that comes out this summer though
Actually this would be a fantastic phone for my dad. I can see older folks who need a smartphone but don't really care about camera quality, refresh rates and outside brightness, loving this.
well, the fact that it feels like a reader does not mean that it really has the same effect. in readers, the backlight is circled on the screen, but here it is as it was, it’s just more diffused but still shines directly into the eyes... so yes, for such a feeling, just get yourself a frosted protective glass for a couple bucks, and if you get bored, you can can be replaced at any time (but I haven’t had enough in 3 years and I will also install matte glass on the next phones)
I would buy one (if I wasnt on Verizon) I read a lot off of my phone and so losing that contrast/sharpness for less eye strain wouldn't bother me one bit. I do love that paper feel screen too! I have a paper feel screen protector on my old Z Flip 3.
All three issues can be fixed by a better display under the glass. I’ve thought about getting a matte screen protector for mine cuz this privacy display is annoying constant reflections
I'm a beta tester of a TCL tablet that has this display, it's friggin awesome! Best thing so far: fingerprints are virtually invisible. Don't have to constantly clean the screen. And YES the screen just feels amazing. Haven't used the stylus yet.
Every time i see a commentary like this, I wonder if I'm the only person who thinks our phones are too bright. Give me a phone that cuts light, reduces eye strain, and beats glare. I don't want a crazy bright phone; give me that battery back and the ability to use in a dim environment without hurting my eyes
I think this is pretty much like TVs. Hence, I noticed one thing: this is an LCD display, of the IPS type. The majority of the TVs are LCD, and have pretty good filters on them, to absorve reflections, as, typically, TVs are placed in well light rooms, e.g., a living room. On OLED TVs, due to the way the light comes out of the LEDs themselves, those same filters are not well suited, as OLEDs would be quite dim, to the point where users would reject it. This is a disadvantage of OLED TVs, and why OLED TVs are not recommended in rooms with big windows, especially when facing the TV directly - like my own living room. I think TCL is bringing this up to save money on cheap phones, while offering something useful. To be honest, i prefer the contrast advantages of an OLED when outside, to the advantages of filtering light of this solution. But hey, maybe it is just my use-case.
It is literally just a matte screen protector. I've used them on all my devices for years. Has all the things you described and you can slap them on ANY flagship devices.
Besides fast charging this is maybe the only feature I'v e seen in new phones that actually interests me. I don't care about processing power, screen size or camera quality. I want a functional phone that is easy to look at. Most of the time I am either using it to make calls, listen to audio or read. Most of my phones have been replaced due to battery age or software updates and generally there's been nothing particularly exciting about getting a new phone for me. This is a feature that would actually make using my phone more pleasurable and at 200 dollars I would honestly not even care if it were that much more delicate because I could replace it multiple times for the same cost as a flagship phone.
You can totally make a matte and bright OLED screen. PC monitors do this. We have 1000 nit oled HDR monitors. The steam deck OLED 1TB has an anti glare matte finish on its glass too. It's cheaper not to do this and glossy does make things pop more so that's the only reason I can think of for why it's not done on phones. I'd rather take a screen that doesn't kill my eyes or has tons of reflection over that little extra pop.
I like this. I'm actually glad that someone is thinking about humanities eyes. My eye doctor has told me that he engages with people in their mid 20s, with the eyes of a 65 year old.
Honestly, I hate that most monitors come with the matte coating. I know most people prefer it, but I really like the vibrant colors and the matte coatings/protectors really dull them and reduce the overall image quality. They do feel great on tablets though.
for someone like me who only use phone for communication and professional work, example calling, texting, email and web browsing, this could be an amazing choice to make, I use my laptop for watching media like youtube and other, and I also have a desktop with big screen that I use for Movie and netflix and also for gaming in that case a smartphone like this to give a comfortable experience is really amazing but again it depends how everyone else prefer to utilize what they have.
Thats why i always use a mate screen-protector! I love the aesthetics and i know the colors are a little bit washed out with a 2nd layer bc of the protector, but i do think its nuts!!
Making this in a tablet would make more sense. But if they had an iPhone mini equivalent with this screen I would go for. It’s just too big and slow for it to be my next phone.
This type of screen could make sense in a high-end tablet since if anyone wants into vector art of basically any form of digital drawing could make use of these types of screens without feeling the way that they are drawing on a glass. A good stylis could also make the process of drawing make like you are drawing on sheet of paper which could greatly improve their work.
I used to always use a Matte screen protector but these are rare and difficult to get today for all the different phones. I never understood the gloss finish on screen protectors. Not only do you get the benefits of less reflections and glare, it doesn't get as many fingerprints on the screen as well.
This very interesting. I have had pc monitors like this for years, but for some reason having the same on a phone never occurred to me. Now, I WANT this
Same as the new release Huawei Tab.. I thinks some years ago they invented a matte screen protector before the prime of aome tempered glass and I'm using it to make my thumb smoother when navigating the screen..
Or we can use a matte finish screen protector and it'll have the same effect on any phone plus protecting the screen. I've used it for many years, the screen is smooth with no light reflection and anti fingerprint but the display loses the sharpness a bit.
Get the best of both worlds and put this on a fold. Matte display on the outside (brighter/higher res of course) and have your crisper, higher contrast (and obviously bigger) display on the inside.
I definitely wouldn’t wanna phone that I couldn’t put a screen protector on but I also prefer the glossy look I feel like a lot of glossy screens have been good at becoming anti-reflective so even on my iPad I got a glossy screen protector and not a paper light
Im really interested in this phone.the screen size, screen tech and price makes it extremely appealing. Add the battery size and even design makes it a near pull. If it has the 5g and LTE radios for US then this would kill in sales. Especially partnering with MVNO's
there’s already matte protective film tht acts like tht.. iphone screens are strong enuff, you no longer needs tempered glass screen protection.. so i just use this matte film which is actually easier to my eyes
If this is just layers over the screen, why not sell screen protectors that achieve the same thing? Apple could even make their own proprietary screen protectors that change the way the screen acts when the phone detects it
Well i don’t think smartphones need this kind of screen already built into them because you can easily get a screen protector that will give you essentially the same matte like effect so if you want something like this just get a screen protector.
I don't get the craze over the higher camera resolution by the tech reviewers/companies alike. Is it comparable to a 1080p screen if you're using it in 1440p mode? I remember the time I used one and it even distorted the color when you look closely so I'm wondering if it's any better now
@@sandysan4191 I think a 1080p screen without a matte protector still looks sharper than a 2k screen with matte protector. The matte protector makes light diffuse that's great for sun light but it also applies for its light that comes from its oled panel.
They already make screen protectors that are Matt finish ...which look exactly like that display
I have had my POCO X3 for 3 years now, and since the day I got it, I've been using Matte Screen Protectors on it, and boy oh boy is it a beautiful experience. My brother has the same phone and uses a normal Tempered Glass Protector, but if I compare our phones, mine always looks better. It's actually significantly cheaper too, than a tempered glass. it does offer almost the same protection, if not better. I have dropped my phone face-first on the ground from my hands, on my own height, A LOT of times. And it has never cracked. All in all, it's a beautiful experience. At least for me.
I think I'd like a matte screen, but I'd need to get my hands on it to be sure... I keep trying to get a matte screen protector but they seem to be rare
not really rare maybe where you are but they are pretty cheap where i am
Holding on to my note 9 as long as it's sw life allows because the fingerprint reader is on the back 👌
@@alattice You should.
S24 ultra
Always greatful to the Android world for pretty much around 98% of the smartphone innovations.
I would buy one (if I wasnt on Verizon) I read a lot off of my phone and so losing that contrast/sharpness for less eye strain wouldn't bother me one bit. I do love that paper feel screen too! I have a paper feel screen protector on my old Z Flip 3.
I really like that flat look. It was the first thing I noticed as you held the phone up.
Digital artists who use the IPad will often use a textured screen “protector” like Paperlike it has a far nicer feel than the slippy glass
This tech would be excellent for digital photo frames
All three issues can be fixed by a better display under the glass. I’ve thought about getting a matte screen protector for mine cuz this privacy display is annoying constant reflections
You can buy a protective film with this effect for almost any smartphone.
Wonder how many new smart phones come out with this type of screen now that MKBHD has brought it to everyone's attention.
Its just matt finish glass protector on the screen ..
If the phone is off, this technically falls under Matte Black Everything. Which, I am all about.
I have apple everything but I was looking for a second phone and this one is absolutely perfect
It is literally just a matte screen protector. I've used them on all my devices for years. Has all the things you described and you can slap them on ANY flagship devices.
Este canal es NEXT LEVEL tiene para escuchar hasta 3 tipos de idiomas en un video, además la review es muy buena y objetiva
Matte protective glass is pretty similar. With less downside I believe
This is a feature that would actually make using my phone more pleasurable and at 200 dollars I would honestly not even care if it were that much more delicate because I could replace it multiple times for the same cost as a flagship phone.
gracias a este video, me lo compre al tcl 40 nxt paper. me llega en 4 dias aprox. todo lo negativo que dijiste, a mi me resulta positivo
That sandpaper like sound you made touching that screen gave me straight up goosebumps I hate it.
Honestly, I hate that most monitors come with the matte coating. I know most people prefer it, but I really like the vibrant colors and the matte coatings/protectors really dull them and reduce the overall image quality. They do feel great on tablets though.
Thanks Marques, thanks to you and this video, i am sure we will see someone implement this tech on 2024/5 smartphones.
for someone like me who only use phone for communication and professional work, example calling, texting, email and web browsing, this could be an amazing choice to make, I use my laptop for watching media like youtube and other, and I also have a desktop with big screen that I use for Movie and netflix and also for gaming in that case a smartphone like this to give a comfortable experience is really amazing but again it depends how everyone else prefer to utilize what they have.
I just noticed yesterday you are on the cover of fast company magazine. Congratulations!
Cool idea. What does it feel like? Like the back glass of an iPhone for instance?
This type of screen could make sense in a high-end tablet since if anyone wants into vector art of basically any form of digital drawing could make use of these types of screens without feeling the way that they are drawing on a glass. A good stylis could also make the process of drawing make like you are drawing on sheet of paper which could greatly improve their work.
I used to always use a Matte screen protector but these are rare and difficult to get today for all the different phones. I never understood the gloss finish on screen protectors. Not only do you get the benefits of less reflections and glare, it doesn't get as many fingerprints on the screen as well.
Glossy users want the screen protection without the blurry wash-out of a matte finish.
You ever figure out what that upside down sticker on the original iPhone was about? Just watched the unboxing video. Haven’t seen any updates yet
This very interesting. I have had pc monitors like this for years, but for some reason having the same on a phone never occurred to me.
Now, I WANT this
Maybe In time they'll develop a glass that can switch between matte and gloss possibly by running a small charge through the glass
There is a screen protector that does this, helps with eye strains too
Same as the new release Huawei Tab..
I thinks some years ago they invented a matte screen protector before the prime of aome tempered glass and I'm using it to make my thumb smoother when navigating the screen..
You can do pretty much the same thing with a screen protector
Or we can use a matte finish screen protector and it'll have the same effect on any phone plus protecting the screen. I've used it for many years, the screen is smooth with no light reflection and anti fingerprint but the display loses the sharpness a bit.
Though not a wide spread feature would definitely love to see more smartphones doing this cus boi does the glare really wear out ones eyes
I have been using a matt textured screen protector for ages now for the same purpose
The way of explaining is just awesome ❤
Dear MKBHD there is a thing called matt screen protector . I used to have it on phone years back . Not a new tech .
Glossy displays drive me nuts, when i got my Tesla literally the first thing i did to it was put on a matte screen protector..
not yet available in Canada or US
Actually its just like tempered glass..use one that mate, its call privacy
When you use matt display it blocks the heat so OLED burning will occur after few years
Bro's wifi is called "MKBHQ" 😂
there’s already matte protective film tht acts like tht..
iphone screens are strong enuff, you no longer needs tempered glass screen protection.. so i just use this matte film which is actually easier to my eyes
If this is just layers over the screen, why not sell screen protectors that achieve the same thing? Apple could even make their own proprietary screen protectors that change the way the screen acts when the phone detects it
Couldn't you get a screen cover that does this if its just textured glass
Why not just offer a matt screen like you can get with some monitors, especially professional photography ones? I'd be into that...
This could be used for car infotainment screens ..... would be perfect 🤔
I guarantee you this is perfect for a fair bit of people. Some people just need a phone
Now all we need is Jerry to rig up this pjone and tell us the actual reasons
Would be a great option for the elderly, people with problem eyesight or with work cases where they spend a lot of time looking at the screen.
the majority of smart phones are glossy. I wish more monitors were glossy. Things just look significantly better, shaper more vibrant with gloss.
Well i don’t think smartphones need this kind of screen already built into them because you can easily get a screen protector that will give you essentially the same matte like effect so if you want something like this just get a screen protector.
There are matt screen protectors, you should try it
well it's called 'Hydrogen glass' here in Nepal.
I don't get the craze over the higher camera resolution by the tech reviewers/companies alike.
The higher the resolution, the bigger the file size, the more validated it is to get a phone with more storage.
have you tried uploading a receipt you snapped on phone to some other app for work/claim purpose?
