- Today we are taking a look at our Sport Modified class, specifically the Axial SMT10. You can see a few of the modifications that are made to get it in racing shape. Thanks to Lonny Childress for loaning his Missouri Wild Thing truck to use!

That Radon motor is now discontinued... what do you run in sport mod now? Radon2? 17.5 brushless?
ordered a smt10 swb kit from ross at rh designs thx to u guys i mentioned to him i inquired about his products when i came across ur channel are u guys running stock hd gears front and back
Great, Ross is a good guy and his kit really helps the truck. I believe most of us are running the standard gears and replace to HD if they go bad. I've had good luck with my truck and no gears have stripped yet.

Trigger King, I'm becoming a huge fan of the pro-mod class and was wondering if you guys run the Tamiya TXT-2 Agrios setup at all and if so what do you think of it from a racing/freestyle aspect? Also i'm curious to know what you guys at trigger king have used the relatively new piggy back style reservoir shocks, and if you have used them at all yet what do you think of them from an efficiency and effectiveness stand point?

Yes, we have had someone run a TXT-2 in sport mod (if you've watched some of the sport mod videos, it's the yellow jeep bodied "Woodstock" truck. It just cannot compete with other racer chassis. Because of this, the owner is retiring it and building a race clod for the class.
As for the piggyback style shocks, they work fine. Several of our trucks use them. They aren't any better than standard shocks, but they sure do look cool!
Thank you for that information. So you're running a 17 turn motor, xl5 ESC from traxxas, so are you still running 2s or can that handle a 3s system with the 17 turn motor?
This video is a bit older. A lot of us are using Hobby Wing 1080 or 880. XL5 isn’t a bad option, but more adjustability on the HW. For our Sport Mod class, we do not allow 3S. You’d have to check the specs on whichever ESC you choose to see if that battery is useable.

thx for the help doug one more question iam running an axial grave digger which have the ar60 axles i was going to install beef tubes should i go with the steel or aluminum ill will be running the concepts gold thx too u by the way subed to ur channel great stuff keep it going
Thanks for the kind words Luis. You will be fine with aluminum beef tubes. All you need them for on a monster is strength versus weight (like you'd want on a crawler). I run aluminum tubes in mine (Rotten Apple truck).

An external BEC is recommended on an XL-5, yes. As for Lonny...we are about to post another TK Tech video with his trucks coming up VERY shortly! We just filmed it two days ago

Most fit great, especially if you get the extended cab versions, if available. The regular cabs can be a bit short, but like most things, it just comes down to how you want it to look.

Most guys with SMT10s are using the stock shocks. There are others though.
Do you use locked differentials in sports mod class?
No, we do not have any guys with full locked diffs in any of our classes.
Just curious.... Does anyone in your club use the Redcat Ground Pounder? Seems this is comparable to the Smt10.

Thanks for the question, but none of our guys run those. The other kits/axles that are out there are much more suited for what we do.

Not sure where you mean. Stock position is ok on this truck. If you are not bashing though, a bit softer spring would be advised.
idk if you are still answering questions on this video or not, but i got to ask, kinda nervous going to clod tires on the SMT10 due to a lot of people telling me the axles break easy with the clod tires, is there anything you guys do to the axle to make it stronger?
Do it, the truck isn't a true monster truck without them. You can see the abuse we give them on our channel and for the most part they hold up ok. Aluminum c-hubs and knuckles are good upgrades to help the axle out.
Oh yea, i know the abuse you guys put the smt10's through, that is why i'm asking lol, i'll get the C-hubs and knuckles and give it a go. My rc bucket list is to do atleast 1 event with you guys, i don't live too far away (central Indiana) but it's still quite a drive.

how fast is the radon 17t brushed motor in this truck? would it be good enough for bashing? if not, what would you recommend for electronics for bashing then? nobody runs monster trucks where I live. I don't want a speed demon, more of a scale driving truck
(month old comment i know) look up Sport Modified event videos on their channel, that should gve you a good idea of speed, but if i had to take a wild guess, i'd say you might go around 15 to 18 mph depending on the battery and gearing setup.
Thank you. I have watched a few videos, both stock mod and modified. The brushless trucks seem to have too much power, where the 17T brushed trucks have just the right amount. 15-18 mph on a monster truck is plenty fast. High power brushless will break things much quicker.
Yeah geared up we are probably talking around 15 mph in a sport mod. The pro-mods have been clocked at 35 mph before when we were drag racing with a timing system on a short track. Some of the really high powered vehicles probably have the capability to go 40-50 mph when given room to run.
i was thinking to use them just in the front axles should i do the rear as well?
Hello I have a Ground Pounder but sadly disappointed. I'm working on a SMT10 and gonna start brushed sport mod and will eventually get brushless. What gearing should I start with the 17T brushed Radon motor you mentioned Pinion and Spur? Thanks 🙏
Go with the included 16t pinion that comes in the box. That with the stock spur is a good baseline.

Luis, I'm running gold on this truck. The majority of us run that compound as its a bit harder than blue but still plenty grippy. The blue ones have so much grip that on a high bite track it'll send you over on your roof. Gold is about perfect.
including initial purchase, whats the total price to get an SMT10 or Clod competitive at the sport mod level?
An SMT10 can be competitive at the sport mod level with a change in tires/wheels, a 17t brushed motor and a front sway bar. So maybe add 200 to the total price, significantly less though if you find used wheels and tires.

I don't know what my local leagues are like, but I think I'm gonna go with a bigfoot classic stampede for my intial foray into Hobby grade RC, if for no other reason than I'll be able to get one much sooner and start playing with it! worst case I get the RC bug hard and I'll have the bigfoot body lol
Hey Doug now with rh designs kit the stock center drive shafts won't work since they are longer I was thinking of going with wraith mip drive shafts do u know if this will work or I can go with mip smt10 drive shafts and grind them down to fit also what size spur gear u guys running thx again for all ur help
You can probably grind them down but I'd ask Ross and see if he knows for sure. Do you have his contact info? Also most of us are running stock spur
What pinion u guys run also do u run on 3s or just 2s thx again
Most of us with an SMT10 are running the 16t pinion on 2S. By rule 2S is the max battery we can run.

Were do they normally race these at?

How do you keep the heat down with the 17t motor? I installed one today on my smt10 and it melted the solder on the wires!!!
I think you need to use rosin core solder
Change the gearing as well maybe? Also the traxxas xl5 esc really runs the motor the best
