I remember buying my first stereo as a teenager in the mid 70's, still living at home, and putting this album on... my mom came in and asked, "Who is that?" I said "David Sanborn." All she said was, "That's beautiful." It still is. Hiram, Marcus, Buddy, and of course David... thank you. Nearly 50 years later it still resonates.
This is just one of those “Holy CRAP!!” songs.Found the “Straight To The Heart” album in ‘86 (when I was in college), and loved every second of it from then till now. Thanks, David and company! What a genuine treasure y’all have been throughout the course of my life. 🤘🏾
I remember the first time I heard this tune. I was in St. Louis (Sanborn grew up in St. Louis, but he wasn't born there.) I was in my cousin's basement and he played a vinyl album called "Straight to the Heart" I was in awe then and almost 40 years later I'm still in awe-- by far this is my favorite album of all time and my wife and I see Sanborn in concert whenever we get a chance. Amazing that a guy who can't even take in a full breath can play the sax like none other!! And what about Hiram Bullock on guitar!!
Sanborn has a brilliant sense of phrasing both technically and melodically. He knows exactly at what point to burn and when to hold back and this makes his solos infinitely more satisfying and exciting than somebody from the Berkeley Jazz Mafia blowing endlessly through 784 full pages of sqemihemidemisemiquavers.
This entire live recording was highly musical, and highly influential. Tons of bands started trying to emulate this unique blend of Soul, Funk, R&B, and Jazz.
This live performance is engrained into my brain so deeply from listening to it on repeat in high school that I still remember every note after not listening to it for 29 years
I love this piece. It's always good to SMILE even when others don't. You know you feel good inside when you can still smile. The Man was so cold on the Sax. I could listen to him and his band for hours. And he was a good looking man.
Wow! Taped this off the FM jazz station some 35 years ago. Played that tape while driving yesterday. Great to find the live concert here on TH-cam. Sounds great and thanks for posting!
WOW it's been 34years it's my favorite David Sanborn songs and double vision my second favorite album,of course this one here is my favorite album by MR.DAVID SANBORN
OMG I stuck this in my TH-cam faves for a reason at least 10 years ago. David Sanborn...Thank YOU! I met you many times and you were always so gracious each and every time. This video I watched on VHS too many times to even guess. The greatest preacher and holler back (@ 8:30) and forth between you and Hiram! THANK you for taking the Sax above and beyond NO OTHER! Not going to miss you because you left behind your mastery that no one will ever come close too! Love ya Brother!💔
Baddest alto tune ever. Saw him at the Warfield, SF, ca. ‘85. We were going nuts at the climax spots. Fantastic band straight through. And that piano intro- geez. Saw a couple of the band members outside getting a breath of fresh air after the concert. Dang! Why didn’t we stop to thank ‘em. Oh well...thanks gents! You killed it. I used to try to play like Sanborn. Eventually I figured out I can’t, so just enjoy his brilliant playing, while I try to find my own “brilliance”, whatever that may be. God bless you David, and band.
I saw this band in the Hammersmith Odeon, London in 1987. Shortly after Hiram started his solo someone in the crowd did two loud whistles (as on this recording) which caused some of the audience to laugh, they'd obviously heard the album quite a few times!
Let us not forget. MM Was the arranger, writter, and producer. Theirs was a perfect musical marriage. RIP. DS, one of the modern goats. RIP to Hank Crawford who was DS primary musical influence. Let us not forget or dismiss those who were foundational.
I remmemer being only 14 years old when I first heard David Sanborn, I believe the song Lisa, and I was hooked. It has taken me years to find that jazz song.
TOTALLY AWESOME! Many thanks for posting this treasure! I first got turned on to contemporary jazz by David Sandborn in the late '80s. Although I have many, this is probably my favorite cut by him...
Love ❤️ it ! Takes me back to the Fri and Saturday Night quiet storm sessions on FM stereo radio 📻 rolling with my woman in my then new 87 Firebird hitting the after hours clubs at 2:00 am ...good times. BTW this song sounds even better in my Lexus 10 speaker 🔊 system now.
Larry, this recording IS almost 30 years old. I still have it on cassette. To see it and hear together is outstanding. Post something yourself and see if it's as good. Or you could go buy the recording. But that is sooooooooo expensive.
So well done.that's how i like to hear marcus.....hiram is out of this world..and i don't even talk about don & david....everything is magic here....🙏🙏🙏
I have this album Bullock rips with the solo and Grolnick rips on piano intro 🎹 very churchy sounding i think he ( Grolnick ) passed on years ago along with Bullock now Sanborn great loss.
This is the album track version filmed. Saw them the year before with the same personnel at Summerfest in Milwaukee. Hiram “won” the trading battle at the ending vamp on that occasion.
😔I miss him soooo! much! One of the greats! Rest in peace David.💋🙏🏽🙏🏽
The best 10 minutes I've heard a thousand times. Thanks, David, for your brilliance.
Possibly Sanborn's best line up.. Love Marcus Miller's and Buddy Williams' understated playing and Hiram was a genius.
I believe I’ve listened to this over a thousand times in my life 😅❤

The intro makes me cry. Look at his determination in getting out EVERY inch of that tune. Then it goes into the song. I LOVE MUSIC. Music is ME
Not enough words in my vocabulary to describe this song and the man playing it, R.I.P. rest well
this is music at its best!!! Saw Sanborn around "86. Was already a fan but blown away by his concert artistry.
The late great Don Grolnick
What a performance. Super!!!!

CLASSIC!!! I first heard this cut about 30 years ago. It truly impacted me then, and it still does now in 2020!
David Sanborn was very young during this video

By far, Sanborn's best song ever! If this doesn't get you going by the end of the song....nothing will! Incredible!!!!
When live just happens to be better than anything you can lay down in a studio. Perfection with rough edges that add to the perfection
Sanborn! Sanborn! Sanborn! Glad you are still with us. Great music man! Bravo!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thank you David for touching so many hearts.
4:13 One of the best guitar breaks of all time!
Everything was perfectly arranged here.
Very "HEAVY" for the early 80's one of the best jams ever!!!!!!
Tears of JOY, RIP David, Hiram, always listening , since Bowie's Young Americans, I saw you one night in DETROIT. ☮☮
Wow! Taped this off the FM jazz station some 35 years ago. Played that tape while driving yesterday. Great to find the live concert here on TH-cam. Sounds great and thanks for posting!
9:25 Sanborn, Miller and Bullock were rocking it. Together their talent was unmatched.
that part had me shivering, laughing of joy. that's what good music does.
I hear you, but there are/were many awesome teams/bands. Just to mention one, Pat Metheny, and Lyle Mays R.I.P.
Sanborn on the very top of his game here
God Bless Marcus Miller for producing this classic album!
Messieurs, le chapeau bas.Je fais ma révérence. Merci, c'est un rêve en réalité.

You will be miss. Enjoyed your music 🎵
I saw Sanborn around '87. No Marcus Miller, but Hiram was with him, and he put on quite a show. He died way too soon.
He's not dead
xoxoAnnieO I think he meant Hiram Bullock.
I was thinking the same thing, but then I realized you meant Hiram!
@@xoxoAnnieO David is still alive, but Hiram passed away in 2008. We also lost keyboarder Don Grolnick in 1996.
Rest in peace, Don and Hiram. ❤

King Marcus starts his reign as Bass God at about 6:50
I saw them kill this in Milwaukee in the late 80s. Best show I've ever seen. The only disappointing part was Marcus wasn't on bass.
Marcus and David. As good as it gets.
Brividi
