A very sweet story, Joe. This performance from the Mike Douglas Show aired the day before I was born. I know, in my heart at least, that Mother saw this broadcast because she was an avid fan of Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin. Another highlight of the show, aired on different occasions was the appearances of Julie DiJohn and the DiJohn sisters. Julie was hysterical as she sang and pushed her wig up and down and did other funny yet endearing antics.
Thank you for sharing your lovely story, Joseph. Perhaps our mothers have met in heaven. God bless.🥲😘

Amy Winehouse did a really good cover of this song, back in the noughties I think, which showed how talented she was as well. I think that’s why I recognised the tune when Gold ( a UK oldies station ) played it a few nights ago.

A rare instance where a TV show band actually did a fine job staying true to a hit pop song WITHOUT patronizing it or steering it in a different direction as so many TV bands did back then.
Ruby and group could actually sing it like the record.
Maybe they carried the arrangement with them and handed it to the bandleader.

@Paul Johnston Thanks for that EXTREMELY interesting info, Paul. I have always loved that song (as recorded by Eddie Holman), even giving it a try in a karaoke show, but I never knew (until you told me) that it had been recorded by Ruby and the Romantics! I will try to find their version, because I'd like to hear it. [Ah, I just found it at th-cam.com/video/KcfRzW8Zrsk/w-d-xo.html.] Oh ... I noticed (above) that I had written my original comment here in 2017, when Ruby was about to turn 83. I decided (just now) to see if she is still alive -- and she is, at age 87! Even more amazing (to me) is that I just discovered that I live only about 53 miles from Ruby and her husband of more than 55 years! I also found a very interesting article/interview from March of 2021, and I recommend that everone read it (at www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/2021/03/26/akron-singer-ruby-nash-garnett-recalls-1960-s-success-romantics/4802379001/ )

KAPP Records A&R director Al Stanton cut two versions of "Our Day Will Come" with Ruby & the Romantics, one with a mid-tempo arrangement and the other in a bossa nova style. They opted for the mid-tempo for the single release and it went to #1. If you compare this with the single, this performance sounds like the Bossa Nova version with vocals replacing the organ solo.

FLAWLESS! So nice to see this clip. They exuded class and talent. Ruby reminds me a bit of Sarah Vaughan in this clip.

So, my Father passed a year ago. He left me all of his LPs way back from the 50s. This album, with many others, is included.

July 1, 2023 I dreamt of this song in complete detail so I hopped out of bed and looked it up.
I was 17 when it first came out and Ruby & The Romantics did a perfect job of singing it.
Looking back to the lyrics of yesterday they were so innocent and high minded -- dreamy and hopeful and not dark and fatalistic like some of the lyrics of today. It all depends on what you choose to focus on.

In late winter-early spring 1967, I was a 15 year old white guitar player in an integrated professional musical group with an album and a tour bus called the Atlantic Coast Show. We played from Washington D.C. to Jacksonville Florida to Atlanta. We wore tuxedos every night to look professional. We played 2 shows with Ruby and the Romantics. The first was in Bennettsville S.C. at a regionally famous club called "The Coachmen and 4", that often featured national R&B and soul recording artists as well as the top regional acts. There is even today a Facebook page dedicated to it. We were the warm-up act that night, and I was in awe of the professionalism and musicality they had. They were the first grownups I had ever met with a nationally charting record, who toured all over the country. They were incredibly nice to me, and we stayed to see their show even though our hometown of Kinston N.C. was 3 hours away. After they finished I helped them pack up and got to talk with them about what it was like to play music for a living. They were truthful and told me it was tough, with late nights, hours/days/weeks/months on the road etc. But they loved it. Must have had an effect on that young kid because in 2020 he's still a professional musician, though these days it's mostly in a recording studio because of Covid-19. About a month after we played, with them there, we found out they were going to be playing for the local community college in Kinston, and we knew the faculty person in charge and told him we had just played with them and asked if we could warm up for them again, for free, because we had experienced such a wonderful time the first time. He said he would have to check with them, but a few days later we got the "OK". When they got to the show we all greeted each other and we said how good it was to see them and have this opportunity again. It was at the National Guard Armory and it was packed, and we did our show first. After Ruby and the Romantics had been playing for a while, and I had been out front enjoying it. They stopped and the guitarist, who was also one of the vocalists, I believe in the video he was second from the right, said they would like to bring up a young friend to play guitar with them, and called me up. I couldn't believe it! He gave me his guitar and I played with them for 3 songs. I remember it was a pink paisley Fender Telecaster with skinny strings, I had been playing thicker, harder to play strings, and from that day on I switched to what he played. They were so gracious, and I was in heaven! I love this song too!

Oh my God! Our Day Will Come by Ruby & The Romantics on The Mike Douglas Show is like watching the stars in the sky! So beautiful and very heavenly! We need to see more clips from the Mike Douglas show from the legendary R&B artists for example the classic show from 1966 featuring both the Supremes and the Temptations! Thank you so much for showing this!

I got to know Ruby Nash in 2008 when we were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall Of Fame. I was inducted as one of The "Original" Duprees. We became friends as we walked around, arm in arm backstage at The Chevrolet Center. It is one of my fondest memories. She was and is a charming, talented lady.
