Why do you need a login to capture Telemetry data? There are plenty of other ways to establish uniqueness of user or device to understand telemetry patterns. Real pity too, as this product is so good that people would happily pay for it. I used it for a real short time and I now feel like the old terminal is terrible. Drop the login or come up with a better reason for the login.

Warp looks cool but it's currently closed source. At the point in time when it is open source, available for both Linux and Mac, and stops forcing telemetry I will give it a try. In the mean time, Kitty is awesome, works on Linux and Mac, has features up the wazoo, does not force telemetry, and I know it pretty well. Some other terminal is going to have to be pretty darn great to get me to move off Kitty.

I really like the workflows idea - but the showstopper for me is the fact that warp ties to the cloud and pulls back data -- that won't work for me (or, I would assume, most people?) since the terminal is a place where you type cleartext passwords. I don't want this thing connected to anything by any stretch of the imagination, much less grabbing data of any kind. There MUST be some way to opt out of this warp folks.

I agree with the people who have complained that you did not make this mandatory account creation requirement clear. It might not be your software and you might not be being paid to spruik it (or so I assume) but I do think it detracts from your overall credibility to either not realise this would be a significant issue to so many of your viewers, or to realise and decide not to mention it.

@@christianlempa I'm not a fan of the forced sign in just so I can use it even if i don't want the AI features. Warp needs to find alternatives to Google AI as an option even if the user has to install an extra package. I don't see it gaining any ground in Linux for this reason. Most Mac or Windows users won't care. I don't like it but I understand. But I can guess with certainty the open source and especially the privacy, GNU & Free-software crowd will not like this at all and be opposed to it. But it has some really good features such as the blocks and the theme styling. The font rendering is really good and might be the best I have seen for Mono fonts. Just want to say I love you. Your videos have fast become my favourite. I do so hope that you have some videos coming for noobies setting up homelab servers etc. A follow along type thing. Anyway, really really nice information. I def am tempted to move back to mac OS, not because i dislike Windows, just sometimes I hit problems working with people on mac OS and although we often work it out and fix problems, I just want a more seamless exerpeience for web projects.

Requires a login to be connected with a well-known OAuth provider. Sorry, I don't want to have to log into a terminal app and I can't even do it with a dummy account. No go for me.

  • @hongbohe4454

The telemetry annoys me since so many sensitive actions take place in my terminal. Also, currently there's still a solid reason that preventing me from switching from iTerm2 and that's tmux integration. I can run `tmux -CC` over ssh to start a tmux session and let iTerm2 handle the session, multiplexing the ssh connection while still have access to native scrolling, tab and split screens, while running `tmux -CC` in other terminal emulators give me nothing.

Warp Terminal seems to blur the distinction between shell and terminal. Hard to know if that is a good thing, without using it of course.

Warp is closed source, requires creation of an account, and only gives you 20 AI queries per day and makes you pay for more. Why can't it be open source and allow you to plugin your existing AI subscription?

I don't have much confidence in a company that can't even tell you what OS versions they are compatible with.
I don't want another terminal I want a Worksheet, something Apple had in the 20th century that was trashed by Jobs, and I've got one in BBEdit it's just not MPW.
