    This is an unbelievably deep mod, the sheer work and scope out into it is difficult to fully appreciate.

      The best part is they didn't even see 30% of this map, nor did they even catch any of the story it tells. It's SSSSOOOO much bigger than they think. @outsidexbox - You need to play through again. You missed a LOT of stuff. You got 1 of THREE endings for this map.

      Obvious spoilers, but if anyone wants to see how MyHouse works, there's a guy that goes by DavidXNewton who has a 3-part series called "The Mysteries of MyHouse" breaking down how it constantly shifts things around and disorients the player. The utter mechanical scale of this WAD is nothing short of staggering. Someone in another thread said that just the WAD itself is larger than the entirety of DOOM 1 and 2 combined

    Wow, loved this. As others have commented, it took inspiration from House of Leaves - one of the main characters has the last name Navidson. The big plot point in HoL is that the house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside (not really a spoiler since this happens very early on). It changes a little bit at first, then becomes more and more eccentric with added rooms that didn't used to be there. The mod does a good job replicating the deeply unsettling aspects of the book by keeping things house-like/ house-adjacent, adding layer upon layer of disorientation. The change from house to concrete apartments to airport is WILD.
    You have to hold the book upside down sometimes and there are pages of footnotes and two other stories going on at the same time. (I actually never finished reading it because it was so dense, ha) But there were a ton of fascinating narrative techniques going on. PT does the same thing - you descend through a house that slowly changes, twisting the familiar into an absolute nightmare. There's a scene in the book that involves a staircase, and I'm absolutely haunted by it even years later.
    Man, I dig stuff like this so much, lol. Great video and great mod!

      Also, having only read it once, and it being a decent number of years ago, what staircase scene are you referring to ?

      @@denniswijker7162 Hmm. I always loved House of Leaves as well. There isn't a particular scene of the staircase that sticks out in memory. I know there's the spiral stairway that changes as the group explores. Then there's the imagery of the shape of the staircase making the fibonacci spiral (like on the cover). But I'd say what stays with me most was Navidson's frantic reading in the dark. Love Danielewski's works (well, I never got into The Familiar much). I would highly recommend several of his other books.

      @@dmrukifellth I read the first two of The Familiar, and thought it was super interesting, but maybe starting a 27 book run wasn't the best idea ever :P (especially not if they are this expensive to print with all the full colour pages and the like). It's a shame he couldn't actually finish it, but I'm also not suprised.
      I really need to reread HOL again (I've tried a few times, but never push through it like I did the first time :( )

    When the door first started swinging instead of sliding vertically I was hooked. The person that made this was a freaking pro! Fantastically seamless world switching.

      I hadn't jumped at anything, but I seriously jumped and said "oh shit" when that smoke monster appeared. It reminded me of how I reacted when the Boy of Silence appears behind Booker after he pulls the lever in BioShock Infinite. Even when I know it's coming I still jump occasionally. I also got major Langoliers vibes from that empty airport.

      It is one of those very easy to overlook things if you're not very into DOOM, there's been so much advancement in game development that you just kind of take like verticality for granted.

      When I watched a documentary about this level, I paused the video like 20 seconds in and stared at the floor being below another floor.
      I've only dabbled in modding as a pre-teen when the games came out, but I totally remember not being able to place floors above floors. The maps are basically 2D with a height parameter.

      Just to confirm the *original* Doom engine can't do room-under-room, but GZDoom, which this mod runs on, definitely can (through portals, 3D floors etc.). The particular application in the "first" version of the house is a rather cute old-school approach using a cleverly positioned silent-teleporter.

      This mod uses a stupid amount of silent/hidden teleporters. It solves the room under room problem of the Doom engine and that's why the door reappears when Mike is backing up the stairs - he's suddenly in a completely different part of the map.

    I think the reason why the lower floor door closes when you back up the stairs is because they have an invisible teleport between the upper floor and lower floor in two separate parts of the map, since Doom cannot naturally have multiple floors

    I don't know if it was intentional or not, but the sheer narrative foreshadowing of having TH-cam recommending "7 Misleading Trailers That Were Nothing Like the Final Game" whilst watching a video, that starts out as a quirky Doom mod with basic Doom enemies, before turning into a horror movie with weird supernatural monster enemies, is just...*chef kiss*

      Its the perfect simple build program that is easy for first time developers. I built sooooo many levels with this and the Duke Nukem 3D creation suite. Its the best starter.

    This is awesome tribute to a life oddly brings back happy memories of my own modding days.. Back then I was working as tech support for a company based in Wales. Now the company had rather grown out of its factory building and to easy space had bolted 2 ranks of 6 portacabins on the side, giving a lovely 2 storey shanty-town vibe to work. Being the tech-support nerds we were, we used to have doom matches over the network at lunchtime. Which of course meant eventually I ended up mapping the entire factory / portacabin complex as a WAD. It took about 2 months to build but we had hours of lunchtime fun blatting each other and the numerous monsters I placed around the factory. Of course, I tried to specific in monster placement, filling HR with lost souls, and the head of stores (who we were all terrified of) was a Hell Baron. The MD only ranked a Cacodemon. Ah happy times

    When I saw the "Sold by Navidson Realty" it reminded me of House Of Leaves, a novel by Mark Danielewski, which has a non-euclidean house. I'd say it was very inspired by that book.

    Yes, MORE LETS PLAY! I love this kind of stuff. Especially when you guys play some obscure weird games (mods in this case) like this. I laughed particularly hard at Andy's "Why haven't you quicksaved? I'd be quicksaving right now" as Mike gets obliterated by Cerberus.

    There's A Ton more stuff you guys didn't even catch, this isn't the end, the from what i can tell the rest of it gets easier in terms of having ammo and health. Maybe do a part 2 for Halloween where you guys read the lore and fully play through?

    I love how subtle this mod/map is. Like ... most people don't realize how they can suddenly look out of a basement window - when there were none to begin with. The weirdness starts so slowly and escalates into madness over 9k. Masterpiece of a map. (And the book it's based on - House of Leaves)

    Okay, judging by the look of the house in one iteration, I'm thinking that the in-game story involves a fire at some point? Like, this game is at least partly "someone was traumatized by a house fire" stuff? I dunno, this is confusing and pretty darn cool. I love how they keep making it into different houses -- and then a freaking airport! Frankly quite impressive. :)

    The pacing in this mod is unreal. From cutesy “look at my house in doom” to backrooms sublte change chicanery, to the ravenholm basement and then brutalist cerberus kennel.
    Also fun to see a horror game genuinely get under mikes skin for once lmao

    This was so surreal and creepy. I think this is the first time Mike has been creeped out by a horror game. Usually he doesn't react or he just laughs. I agree that the noises were the worst part.
    That airport at the end gave me immediate and intense Langoliers vibes. I legit jumped and said "oh shit" when that shadow monster appeared behind him in the plane. Yeah, this is definitely extremely effective horror. Damn. I've never done drugs, but this mod makes me feel like I've done drugs.

    Even though I've already seen others play through this mod and I've played through it myself, it's amazingly deep and I hope you guys keep at it because it warrants it. Also, the "friend's" map that he finished story is complete bunk. It's obvious that it was a from scratch creation based on an old idea that used to pop up a lot in the forums. Also also, you can only get the best ending if you don't kill the dog. The tiny dog poses no threat so it's easy to not kill him, and the big one can be entirely avoided as you did here.

    I've never really been a Doom fan, but House of Leaves is one of my alltime favorite books so it was cool to see a mod inspired by it. If you haven't read it Andy, I think you'd really enjoy it.

    I was not expecting the whole environment to change as they were playing. I wonder if that health was there just to draw people out for the house interior to undergo such a change. A lot of work went into this.

    Ok, the smoke monster on the plane legit jump scared me. Holy hell, this was a weird combination of Doom and The Backrooms and I love/hate it.

    I would love to see a full series or a few livestreams of you two trying to truly complete this mod. Having watched Power Pak's video essay (which I think is what really launched this mod into the mainstream), I know that y'all haven't seen half of what this mod can do and I would really enjoy hearing your reactions and occasional riffs. In the meantime, I heartily recommend that video essay for anyone who was intrigued by this video but would rather not play the mod themselves. It's a great way to experience a lot of what this level has to offer and what the narrative and inspirations could be without having to battle your own fear to keep moving forward.

      I think as the iterations progress, as with the other improvements (opening doors, smoother animations etc) the reflection does show.

    Ah, the Cerberus part is messing with me. In the map where you're small (a child?) It's an unstoppable monster. In the map where you're normal sized, it's just a regular dog. That your neighbor just saw you shoot.

    very interesting, a lot of layers to this level, i was trying to work out when things changed from the first to the second iteration of the house and i'm not sure if it was when Mike went into the dark room or not. would be interesting to see what clipping though the level reveals

    Oooooh haven't even got through the video yet but it's so cool that you're playing this!! I watched a video on it a couple of months ago and thought it was pretty neat. I loved the book that this mod is based on, House of Leaves- definitely worth a read for experimental horror fans 🥰

      ​@@blunderingfool No, it actually is. In this video, they only saw maybe 30% of the map, and didn't explore any of the "documentation" that went with it. It 100% tells the story of a gay couple that were ostracized by their families and had to endure multiple tragedies. Find another video that goes completely through it. It's fucking WILD.

      @@jellojiggler1693 They didn't explore the full map. There's some documentation that comes with the map in the same file that's kind of a journal of sorts. Plus, they saw maybe 30% of this map. The full map has parallel realities, time travel, and tales of loss and tragedy. It has three different endings based on how you explore. In this video, they only found ending 1, which is the shittiest of the endings.

      ​@@jellojiggler1693 It's from piecing the map's story together from the ingame and out of game clues (there are a bunch of "lore" docs for the map, like an ARG, that the author published alongside the map). It's all very intentionally vague of course, but a very likely reading is that it's about two men that were married/in a relationship and one of them died, plus a bunch of other stuff. The map is very big and has tons of content.

      The entire map is a house of leaves reference. There's even a closet that opens into an impossible hallway, but only 1 out of every 100 or so times you open it.

    If you want another blast from the past inspired game to check out, have a look at FAITH: The Unholy Trinity. It's like an Atari 2600 game went to hell several times and took a lot of drugs during each trip. Even from the screenshots and trailers it looks genuinely messed up. 8-bit horror as it never was.
