  • Today's video is all about the Sugar Rush Stripey pepper. This Capsicum baccatum variety is an absolutely incredible plant, producing striped peppers. They're also tasty and have the perfect amount of heat (for us).

    A lovely specimen. Plants are definitely sprawlers too, so you want large containers and they love to eat! So, keep pumping the nutrients throughout the season and you'll get an earlier harvest, for longer and won't have all that chlorosis. Well done!

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! The chlorosis is due to the temperature drop here in New England - but maybe needed more nutrients as well - I’ll try more frequent feeding next year 👍🏻

    I saw this video when it first came out. It was because of the enticing description of the taste of this pepper that I bought SRS and SRP seeds. The Stripey is truely phenomenal. I think it's easily my favorite pepper ever! Unfortunately the "Sugar Rush Peach" seeds I received from a seller in Finland were not actually SRP. They were a peach of some sort, but they were more like a cayenne in size and shape. And after 9 months of growth, I've still only had one come to color. I have another seller sending me some SRP seeds for next year though. I look forward to trying them next summer.

    I grew sugar rush peach this year. Long story short, the plant took some abuse but bounced back several times. It is loaded with peppers, and I am getting beautiful peppers that are a nice orange and taste fruity.
    I was expecting them to have heat. Mine had none.

    • @davidniemi6553
      @davidniemi6553 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is really unusual -- I've eaten a fair number of Sugar Rush peppers (Red and Peach) anywhere from green to fully ripe, and they have been consistently "medium hot" (Cayenne level) or a bit above. The one exception was one bush that had peppers that looked more like Aji Strawberry Drop, and were not hot and not particularly tasty; but I suspect it was just a stray seed from another variety.

    • @christines2787
      @christines2787 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidniemi6553 - definitely a bush. The plant is about 18 inches tall and wide. I have saved seed and will try again next year. Not sure about seed reliability as these came from etsy. However the lemon drop peppers from the same seller were exactly what I expected.

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are striped, but will ripen to a solid color (I believe red). These actually ripen to striped, which is what makes them special. Also, the candy cane is a sweet pepper (no heat)

    I was so excited for the sugar rush peach, I did like 6 plants this year. I finally got one plant that had produced, and I let them stay on to ripen. It seemed to be taking a long time to ripen (about a month after being a good size). Finally I tried one. Nope, it's still just a vegetal flavour. So I waited probably another month, tried again, still just a vegetal flavor. They are quite hot, and there is a little bit of sweetness, but red bell peppers are sweeter than what I got. I was quite disappointed with my results.

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm, well I guess they aren't quite as sweet as a red bell, but they should take on a more fruity flavor as they mature. SRP/stripey always take their sweet time ripening though.

    Have you ever tried or grown the Aji Panca? I've been growing the Aji Amarillo in pots for around 3 years now, and last year tried ty he Panca. This year I tired the seeds from the stems that were not isolated, and ended up with some very odd looking plants and fruits, very long fruits with a hint of the flair at the bottom classic of Amarillo, all sugar rush, and the lemon drop. They curve into what looks like a fish hook at the very end! Super exciting! Taking forever to ripen.

    So excited you posted this video!! I am a 1st time gardener this year & have 3 Sugar Rush Stripey plants in buckets...bought 11 seeds on Amazon. Was happy 3 germinated! The plants look great, I have TONS of peppers growing...& yup, they're large but still greenish! I'm worried because I potted them on 7/1. I live in Missouri & October weather is SOON going to make the plants very sad! Can I bring them indoors under grow lights so the peppers will ripen? Might be a dumb question...

    • @PepperGeek

    I'm curious about all the yellow leaves on your Sugar Rush Stripey plants. Is that just the onset of fall, a lack of nitrogen, or something else? I am noticing similar yellowing on some of my pepper plants the last few weeks, but not all, and usually more on the lower leaves. I'm in zone 7a so probably slightly warmer than your location; first frost is almost always in November.
    I have both Sugar Rush Red and Peach this year. Do you notice much difference in taste between those two and with Stripey?

      Yes, we've been having nights in the 40sF - All our plants are looking similar now. Up until about a month ago the plant was lush and green!

Quick question, I'm either growing a jalapeno or a ghost, I do believe it's the Ghost I planted months ago based on the shape and what not, but my question is, one of my peppers has a two tone going on almost like the pepper has a belt (different shade of green than the rest of the pepper) but it's not rotten or anything. Is that normal/rare or not supposed to happen?

    Nice video. Why don’t the Aloha peppers make the same pepper from the seeds? Thanks

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something to do with the genetic trait, this one can be carried down via sexual reproduction while the aloha trait must be cloned/propagated asexually to keep the striped trait

    • @tongshengwu171
      @tongshengwu171 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its because its a hybrid plant, if you let it pollinate itself its going to have very different genetic makeup compared to the original hybrid because its genes are mixed up during sexual reproduction. In theory it is possible for the aloha pepper to make the same pepper from seed but it is a very low chance

    We live in Milwaukee, WI.. zone 5 .. our growing season is typically shorter than 6 months required to fully ripen. How cold tolerant is the sugar rush stripey? I am assuming I would need to start them inside earlier to get a much needed head start.

    too much time for the peppers to ripen, translates to how many months ?

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends how large you let the plant grow. If you keep it small you may get ripe pods in 5 months from planting, ours weren’t ripe until 6 or so months from sowing seeds since the plant was in a big container

    6 months is a long time :(
    in my area (northeast Italy) i can get away with sowing pepper seed in late april, and temperatures are starting to dip into 8-10°C at night these days, so i would be able to juuuust fit these in, but some years the temperature doesn't start to rise at least until may.
    how is this variety resistance to cold?
    What would be a sweet-hot variety that grows a little faster?

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not very resistant - it has been around the same temperature here at night and as you can see in the video, the leaves are all turning yellow and blotchy from the cold.
