Thanks Litterboxmusic. Damn if this doesn't bring back some incredible memories of the two nights I got to see this extraordinary player. Good human being too. I talked to him after the 1st night, and he let me tape the 2nd night's performance. It was a one set guest spot with a local band. I found out later how rare it was for him to allow it. Seems every time he let someone tape, the night was a disaster somehow. Held true this time too. The club he was scheduled to play closed down the next morning. Owner just locked the doors and said tough luck. Luckily a local friend of his found him another gig sitting in with a local band about 45 minutes drive away. They were thrilled to have Rainer play with them that night. I was lucky to get a call about the change from his friend. I kind of knew him from the local music scene. After the show he told me was shocked that Rainer let me still tape, considering the history, and what had happened to his original gig that night Always a disaster. Yup. I treasure that tape, the memories of talking to the man for a while, and sharing a joint with him outside the club. RIP Rainer Ptacek
I remember this show. I was shanghied into hauling my friends equipment up Mt Lemmon (Hazzards of owning a Pickup Truck) . Was a Super Fun weekend. The Broken Horse moved to San Fransico long ago. I miss the Old Music scene in Tucson.
Wow. I was looking at a bike vid from Tucson and Rainer's name popped up. I worked at the Chicago store in the late 80's, and Rainer used to work in the basement. I can remember him being down there all day listening to NPR on an old tube radio while working on guitars. Joe used to always bitch about him! Rainer was totally friendly and mellow. I had heard he was ill but I lost track of everyone in Arizona.
This man was great!!! Since a few months I discovered his music and what can I say... What a feeling, what a technique and he seems to be a nice guy too... To late to see him in concert, but I'm sure he will be rememberd as as one of best on dobro... Impressed! Rest in peace, Rainer! We'll keep you alive with your and our music.
Remember RAINER kicking ass on this gig, he went on right before headliner Jonathon Richman Solo (of the Modern Lovers) I had them @ The Jar the night before in Phx AZ!!! Was @ this w/Sally Stricker, Peg Hartman, Carlos Stricker & Dawn Brunsman!!
You can feel his spirit coming out of that reso. Spect he has a few others standing around him as well. In my book he ranks right up there with Rory Gallagher & John Campbell. Rest easy Ranier.
Not sure what it was on this gig, but it looks like some sort of rattle/shaker setup. He often used a simple wooden box to pound his foot on for extra rhythm (original stomp box). I know because I used to put a mic on it when I was the sound guy for his shows ;-)
Thanks so much for sharing this! Any idea who filmed and edited this? Sure would love to see more performances from this weekend! It was so much fun! I remember it was very diverse. I think What Went Wrong played...Phantom Limbs...River Roses....Infinite Beauties... The Host?
I was there. I am so glad that I saw him play.
Thanks Litterboxmusic.
