Dee Murray was a monster player. Every time I listen to this album its a jaw dropping experience. I saw this trio around 1971 and they were incredible.
Sure is....an amazing bassist....sure wish I could have seen this trio....been a Dee fan since I started playing 46 years ago...so much respect for him...as you said a jaw dropping performance....cheers
I believe 11-17-70 is the core bedrock of any Elton John music collection. I recently turned 60, so "60 Years On " is another gem on the same album. Many thanks to Ronnie for this post!
Saw them for the first time live in my hometown Honolulu, May '71. I was blown away how good a three piece band could rock the house without a guitar, and because of the way he commanded the performance... I could see how the piano could be the focal point again... ala Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard. Saw him again in '72 (Seattle) and again at home in '74 with Kiki Dee. Had many opportunities to see him since, but I felt like I'd seen him at his best... seems so longer ago now... 45+. Murray died young, Dungeon as well... and just recently Paul Buckmaster. Decided I'm gonna see him one more time, next month, The Million Dollar Piano in Vegas... my understanding is it's back to three again... Elton, Nigel & Davey :-)
I remember sitting in a tree fort along the Wappingers Creek mid-70's and listening to a cassette player, driven by a battery, playing Yellow Brick Road. Mike M. said, "This is not the real Elton John. His old stuff is really good." It took 30+ years, but I picked up on the early years. TH-cam bolstered that. Thanks, Mike, for putting a flaming match at the bottom of a kindle stack.
When this record came out, for me, it "set the bar" as far as EJ albums go. It's my favorite and it captures a pure, raw exciting live moment. I consider this album a Masterpiece. No painting the sound with an orchestra, he doesn't need it here.
This is a bit silly, but rather than hum "Happy Birthday" twice to time washing my hands, I sing "Can I Put You On" to myself. Don't have any idea why. I've had that song in my head for fifty years. This radio show in NYC put Elton John on the map.
Elton , Dee and Nigel - solid walls of sound.
Eh, Eh, Eh, Elton and the Jetssss.....
You can discern Elton's love for Leon Russell in his playing on this tune. Truly heaven on earth!!!!
To me this is the best live album ever
I just bought it tonight...omg...is Dee playing a FRETLESS? This just sounds so good!!!

Man, love the funky bassline

The bass is bad ass as Dee’s playing usually was. The whole thing just cooks here!

Nigel Olsson's drumming sounds pretty fresh (modern) for 1970!
Just saw Nigel and Davey play with Elton two nights ago and Nigel sounds pretty fresh now. Such a great artist.
Just love that twang he had in the early days. Go elton.
Amazing for a three piece band, I just love this song, one of my favorite Elton tunes.

Smokin tune

One of the greats!
Upon hearing this, I regret not buying a sealed original copy for a nice price. This is is a heavy hitter!
He was just straight up having fun 😂👌🏻
FANTASTIC!
I have that album
Am I the only one that feels resemblance among Dee and Jaco ?
Most definitely! A truly under rated player. R.I.P. Dee.
Richard Jaco?
Now that you mention it... Plays a great bass without trying to make it sound like just another guitar...
I'm here again (and again and again!) in your prison Sir.........
