Mario Power Tennis is by far one of the best sport games in the Mario universe. Edit: It’s a GameCube title that was modified for the Wii, and works surprisingly well. That’s why character selection is somewhat limited.
So the reason some of them are "weaker" powershots is because there's two types - offensive and defensive. The offensive ones (Wario's shock hammer thing, DK's cannon, Shy Guy's lightning lob) usually are very strong and have some sort of stun-aspect to mess your opponents up if they manage to actually hit the ball. The weaker ones are defensive powershots. They are weak but will GUARANTEED return the ball. If you manually choose between the powershots and choose an offensive one when the ball isn't nearby, you're likely to miss the shot. If you choose a defensive, it'll always return but it'll be weaker. It'll also negate any negative effects from your opponent's offensive shot. Best suggestion is to let the computer decide if you can do an offensive or defensive shot (the "Normal" choice at 7:26). That way, you'll use the offensive ones when you can and you won't miss them, and you'll automatically use the defensive one when the computer knows you can't hit an offensive shot. Sorry for long-winded, I played the shit out of this game.

This is why the CPU’s specials were so weak it was because they were using the more defensive special than the offensive one. Also the control menu in 7:23 is for power shots. Easy means you just swing to activate, Normal mean you have to press A when you swing to activate it, Technical means you have to press A and swing for an offensive shot or press B and swing for an defensive shot, and manual means you have to be in the right spot near the ball to use an offensive shot so you can hit the ball because if your not in the right spot you’ll miss the ball just like at 12:41. Hope this helps

I'm not sure if you are going to play the game again, but to do your different star swings, you hold A and swing for Offense (Wario getting hit on the head) or you hold B and swing for Defense (The Ultra Machine Wario pulls out). The Defense Star Swing often homes-in on the ball for you, but it usually leaves the ball open for the receiver to land a smash hit on the ball.
