A good example of a sci-fi treatment of an older, supernatural idea, The Midwich Cuckoos is essentially a tale of changelings, though I dare say there are plenty of other interesting layers to it relating to the differences and alienation between the generations. Anyway, this three-part serial was broadcast in the early 80s - as the rather beautiful and era-specific synthesized score makes very clear - but of course there have been other radio adaptations since, including one starring Bill Nighy circa 2000.

Really enjoyed this production, although I wish it could have been longer. I gave up on the Bill Nighy version after ten minutes because I found his performance so grating. Many thanks.

So enjoyable. Macabre too. Well worth listening to. Thanks.

Glad you liked it; I've also posted a later version which stars Bill Nighy - though I dare say you'd probably want to wait a while before listening to that one.

This is without doubt the best version.. And the composer of the suitably " weird "
theme music deserves mention too. !

I've always felt that the 1980s productions really suited John Wyndham's stories - including the eerie synthesized music in this case, as you say...

      Yes. Great minds think alike...???
The Music was composed by Roger Limb of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop....they also
produced the original Dr Who theme . As for the current abomination masquerading as
Dr Who ; don't get me started. !!!!

24:40 multi-child peep show "I... do not intend to lose my child that way": 🇨🇦 Canada's Dionne Quintuplets int'l scandal was < 20 yr past when 'Cuckoos' came out. Wyndham likely knew of it.

Thank you, I knew nothing of the Dionne Quintuplets - as you say, it's extremely plausible that Wyndham would have been aware of it. Having just seen a photograph of the girls in their teens (I think) I did find there was something oddly uncanny about so many people in place having an identical appearance (no disrespect to the young women intended, of course).

FAR tops the 2003 one; follows Wyndham's plot well (given the run-time limit.) The other adds a lovers' bust-up; ladles on cheap emotion😡; and alters the ending greatly. As well try to 'fix' Bach!
