What you are seeing is the survivors. My dad was a Vietnam vet. MANY of them suffered too. Sadly too many did not make it to old age. Never beat yourself up if you are having a hard time. Please seek the help you need. You served this country and we owe you a debt that we can never repay. Many civilians don't understand but many do. You have my respect.
@@choncha23 old school mentality helps. Not everyone is cut out for the job either. There's a lot of people that can't handle it well that never show it. A large number of survivors from ww2 suffered shell shock etc... not all men are created equal.
But the ones that handle it well? They're safe. They're home. They're away from conflict. And they have context of life and learned to let go of everything they could and welcome a new day and enjoy the smaller things in life on a level someone who hasn't seen that kind of thing couldn't even begin to understand
They knew who the enemy was. Nobody knew in Iraq and Afghanistan. They were plain clothed.
You gave the answer to your own question. Because they're not closed off and bitter about it. They are thankful to be alive, having no pride or ego to protect. They know full well that it was not their doing but by the grace of God that they're not 6ft under like the pals they helplessly watched die at their sides.
The day you find yourself in a situation so horrible that you realize you are completely helpless and need others to survive, where your ego and pride is ripped away, leaving you with nothing but a choice to rely on outside help or die: That's when you understand what life truly is like, where you become humble and appreciate the small things in life that actually matters.
The only people taking it with a smile are people realizing it could have been them and have found how valuable it is to be alive.
If I can make a suggestion? Talk to people. Other vets I've heard are the best to find. But whether it's someone you deployed with or just a person you trust, talk about it. Best of luck to you, no matter what you had to do, or saw thank you for being here.
