The Gallery's collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, medals, and decorative arts traces the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present, including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas.

If you love art, I definitely recommend visiting this gallery. We visited some friends and only had a day in DC. My friend took me here and I am happy she did. I probably wouldnt have thought of it otherwise.

I love the NGA! I guess you have to like or appreciate art for one. I especially love the gift shop and dining area downstairs. Most people have no concept of art history, so if you have no knowledge or appreciation, you might skip it, but I think you’re missing out.
I love contemporary, but one artwork you absolutely should not miss is Raphael’s “The Alba Madonna”. It’s a bit hard to find but worth it.
The Leonardo at the NGA is the only Leonardo painting in the western hemisphere. The National Gallery is NOT part of the Smithsonian Institution. It is a different federal museum.
You’re right about it not being a part of Smithsonian.
I thought this was a parody when I read "Waist of time".
