Every day, workers in human services in Australia are faced with decisions where Duty of Care seems to apply. This video examines the vital differences between duty of care and dignity of risk. Emi Golding, Director of Psychology for the Workplace Mental Health Institute, explains when each applies and what to do about it. Enjoy!

Excellent video. Learned all about Dignity of Risk in studying to be an AIN (Assistant in Nursing). All the sound in this video is in my left ear though- right is totally silent, just checked my earphones they were fine in other TH-cam videos.

A staff member may instinctively grab the arm of a customer when they are about to cross the road in dangerous traffic. This reduces the dignity of the customer who is then subject to the staff member’s judgement rather than their own. But if we give our customers the knowledge (of road rules, for example) and experience (via practice and unobtrusive supports), then the rather crude intervention (of clutching the customers arm on the verge of a busy road) becomes unnecessary and obsolete. The result being that another potentially restrictive practice is eliminated. The Point of the Story Being that we can only Teach,Protect our Clients to a certain degree but at the end of the day it is their own Decision to Say Yes or No to doing what they want to do and that is "Risk of Dignity" :)

Hi Joan, it is an individual's right to be shown both a Duty of Care by the institution providing care and that the individual's right to Dignity of Risk is respected.

Yes, the only fault I found with this video was the criminalisation through the use of the term "kill" themselves.
