Thank you for the rant about rock and roll lifestyles and Axl Rose and all that. Seriously. I'm just at the point where I'm starting to perform frequent longer sets of challenging stuff as a lead vocal and it makes you realise that even though the Rose's and Bon Jovi's or whatever of the world had/have vocal issues, the fact they were able to do what they did AT ALL for several years in a row despite their absolutely trash lifestyles, lack of teachers at the time, probably horrible stage sound etc means that at their peak they were definitely doing it right, or at least 99% right. Not to mention the years before that when they were developing their craft. Of course a lot of that material is so fucking hard that once 99% slips to 90%, I'm guessing things can go south quite quickly especially if you become complacent and pick up a vocal injury.
I recently started to get into CVT (complete vocal technique). Floor Jansen from Nightwish mentioned it and I was curious. Since I'm dense af when it comes to just feeling and not thinking, and I sabotage myself almost all the time, I find that following those specific instructions for each type of emission helps a bit until I gain confidence. And then there's your clips, Chris Liepe etc. There's literally so much to explore, folks.
Brilliant, brilliant video, addressing a fear that I genuinely had - ie, in my head I'm going 'this feels like compression, this feels like mix etc' but I am also thinking 'but what if I am wrong and damaging my voice?' Would you say not wanting to reinforce bad habits if I AM doing it wrong is a more legitimate fear? Currently saving up for some lessons btw.
You’re gonna notice if you’re “damaging” your voice. That’s pretty intense. You’ll be losing your voice and becoming hoarse. Yes, it’s good to get guidance and clarification but when something doesn’t feel good, you’re gonna know .

There is a limit to speaking in high notes yes, but you can still express, usually a high intensisty energy (as the sound would assume). Just take some power metal as example.
But yeah, range is part of the expression, and should be a tool, not a goal.
Specially in rock and metal, where the idea is exactly not be limited!

Tbh, being a baritone is not a curse, it's an advantage. You can learn how to sing high like a tenor and get bass notes for free as you age.
deeper voices just have more power. strange how the common music world view is the opposite

I used to love Axl's singing until my brother learned to sing like that and he literally blew my ears every chance he got. Now it's just annoying. And he literally doesn't give a f. I'm struggling here to build my voice and he was just like effortlessly nailing everything almost on the spot. Life is unfair. 😂
I was in a band back in high school with a few friends, or singer had a huge ego, he was in chorus and choir but when he sang in the band singing stp, green Day, Nirvana, stuff like that, he'd Always scream EVERYTHING!!!!! Yes a few of his screams were decent but he didn't need to scream all the time😂 it was very obnoxious , he was also the reason i didn't start getting serious about singing until maybe 12 years ago. I looked up to him for whatever reason and he didn't ever have anything nice to say so it made me self conscious until 12 years ago I asked myself wtf should I still care what he thinks when I haven't seen him in 25 years lol. Sorry about your brother😅

These are the dudes that come to me years later saying they used to be amazing but can’t sing anymore and expect me to fix them haha

The major idea about enunciation could probably be interpreted as "staying in your natural voice", at least that's what I figured out on my own and with the vocal teacher. The high notes on their own (especially head voice) are not as indicative of the voice type, and to me, it seems that it's much more about how high can you go with your natural voice, can you hold those high notes, and can you stay in that high range for an extended period of time. Both James Hetfield (Metallica) and Bruce Dickenson (Iron Maiden) have show-off notes like B4 in their songs, but James doesn't hold notes like that, just hits them quickly and very rarely before coming down to a more comfortable range below G4, while Bruce can hold B4 and can even spend the whole verse belting in G4-B4 range. That's the difference between a baritone and a tenor
