- Little Pardamat survived a long and frightening spell on his own, trying to fend for himself after his mother was killed.
His saga began three weeks before his actual rescue. On 5th July 2023, the body of a lactating female elephant was found in Pardamat Conservation Area, in the Mara ecosystem. She had been fatally speared - yet another victim of human-wildlife conflict that plagues this area. Given that she was still producing milk, she had clearly given birth fairly recently. However, her baby was nowhere to be found, leading everyone to fear the worst.
A week later, a yearling calf wandered into a Maasai boma. By the time rangers arrived to track him down, he had already joined a nearby herd. Hoping that the calf was not an orphan, but rather belonged to a female in the herd, the decision was made to leave him in place and closely monitor the situation.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

The mother was speared to death?! Those people are despicable. If you don't want wildlife to destroy your crops, then, move! Imagine the amount of pain she was in while they stabbed her to death. RIP, Momma Elephant. Your son is in good hands.

It breaks my heart and is incomprehensible how someone could spear the mother of this baby. They would have had to have known she was caring for young. Can anything be done to stop these people from killing these elephants

In this world of Human exploitation, and competition and frankly destruction; I am pessimistic of the Human race. So many deceived into believing the World is a basket of resources to exploit to remove and sell. It's quite disheartening to watch Humanity worshiping so many falsities and express such brutality and vanity.
But then in the midst of my darkness, I watch a light emerge from some far away place and I am briefly restored and my wish for life to continue is renewed.
Perhaps its an Easter thing though I am not a religion believer. I am a humanist and a naturalist. In the life of this Planet Earth is God enough to see.

He think he adjusted quickly because he was alone, scared, & picked up quickly the reserve had everything he needed. I wish it was like that for humans. When you don’t have a family or a family unit that works, that someone else’s family could take you in so you could be nurtured and loved like some people get from families. People who love you forever so you are never really alone.

You have been operating for 40/50 odd years if not longer and yet adult mother elephants are still in danger and speared to death leaving their babies wandering until you come along for the rescue...It seems to me there is no money to be made from saving adult mother elephants only babies of which you seem to have no problems finding and keeping,...There is an old saying prevention is better than cure but after all this time it still does'nt apply.
