    31:31 So, what you're saying is that it is all ogre now?
    2:21:32 It wasn't just fear, it was actual treats. The Beholder is one of the monsters that Gary Gygax (the co-creator of D&D) made himself without drawing form any mythological source, and TSR was and Wizards of the Coast is very protective of the creatures Gary made himself.

    I'd recently replayed FF on the NES Classic and finally beat it after never being able to before. Then I watched this run and felt humbled. But also learned quite a lot about this game. Like why my White Mage in Slot 4 could never run from anything. I yelled "are your legs broken?!" multiple times.

    • @kyleh1127
      @kyleh1127 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      OneTrueBelmont yeah, I almost always played with a white mage in slot 3 and always just assumed wms were shit at running. I also learned why it always seemed like half my buffs did nothing noticeable, turns out they didn't

    "The current record completion is 3 hours 6 minutes" I guess this is from before the game-breaking "stairs glitch" was found. Now FF1 can be completed in a matter of minutes.

    • @LaserTrapProductions
      @LaserTrapProductions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nope, that's been known for a while longer. It's also the Famicom version of the game, which is a different version to this one slightly. The FF1 US record was indeed 3 hours 6 minutes at the time of this run, whereas the FF1 JP record was somewhere around the 7 minute mark.

    • @shelbyherring92
      @shelbyherring92 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to mention, most games are usually broken up into three main categories: Any% glitched, Any% glitchless, and 100%.
      And the community decides the boundaries of each of those categories.
      So, even though this is the US version, it could be considered like a Any% glitchless.

  • @CultOfJim
    @CultOfJim 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Black mage is better low level due to early access of Fast, makes them almost mandatory to kill Chaos at Level 9. You hit level 10 and Red Mage totally outpaces in utility, Mute a boon for two early bosses on the NES. Tiamat first, usually do Kraken second, though Kary is often recommended second.
    Also, I finished Chaos off like that with 4 White Wizards at level 50. Granted, I savestated right before the battle, still took quite a few attempts. But, yes, it is a glorious end.
    Crit is still a stat for monsters, and it actually works properly (unlike char weapons)- it's just that a roll of 201/201 is always a hit and always a crit. So it's not that unless they crit, just if they roll the auto-hit, which just happens to also crit. Ruse is 80 evade & Invs is 40, thus 3 Ruse maxes evade regardless of level (240>201), or 2 Ruse and 2 Inv2 for 3 characters to max. So, if the RNG was true, it'd be less than a 1% chance of a crit. But, since it's a chart, it's actually a little higher (though most won't get to see it). And the 201 thing is something I've been chewed out about, so if I'm wrong, blame those who wrote some of the original faqs who corrected me.

      Mah-Sah-moon
      Mah-sah moon- a
      maz-uh-moon-a
      etc.
      There is no "correct way" since we don't know how it was pronounced originally.

    • @YadonTheCat
      @YadonTheCat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh I see, it's misspelled in the NES version
      It's meant to be Masamune, meaning it's a sword by Masamune Okazaki, a legendary swordsmith
      So it should be mah-sah-moo-nay

    I understand why they go through this play through avoiding all the tough fights (marathon safe and all), but it really cheapens the difficulty inherent to this game. I'd honestly have rather seen a less controlled play through wherein they had to deal with the hordes of undead and such that the marsh cave (among other dungeons) can throw at you. Granted the sheer amount and consistency of RNG manipulation on display was pretty awesome in its own way.

    • @shelbyherring92
      @shelbyherring92 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At that point might as well watch a Let's Play...
      Because RNG manipulation is a big part in speedrunning, especially in RPGs.
      But yeah, the amount of memorization and manipulation on display is impressive.
