Honestly I think in this case (and several others but not all the time obviously) it adds to the intensity of the music (if not forced). It makes the overall experience more genuine to me and although my favorite recording of Moanin is on Blues and Roots this one is amazing as well.
@@raidone7413 Going to be very general and brief but in short it is the highest register of woodwinds. For saxophone its generally considered anything above a high F#.
This solo is absolutely monstrous. The starting lick that’s solely chromatic REALLY draws you into it by the groovy rhythm and the jazzy harmony of the chromaticism. And the “failed altissimo notes” add an incredible amount of tension to the ending. Almost like they were meant to be failed. Love it.
Goodbye, Ronnie Cuber. I have always loved your music and I am so saddened to hear you go. I wish in my life I could have heard you live but I’m so grateful I got hear your music on this song and many other tunes. I truly enjoyed hearing your music. RIP and fly high legend.
I played this for my senior feature piece for high school. It kicked my ass. (Obviously not the solo) this song is controlled chaos from start to finish.
@@kirin8735 in my opinion leo playing it is a novelty, something i pull up when i want to show off what the bari can be to people, but i rarely find myself listening to that recording casually, meanwhile i listen to Ronnie and Pepper Adams' recordings a couple times a week, just because of how legit good and raw the tracks are
I’m a freshman in high school and have been pressured into playing this for the jazz band😂😂. I learned the main portion in the beginning then tried the intro and our piano player goes “hey don’t mess with Ronnie Cuber’s solo it’s suicide”. I lost it after that, thank you so much so I can actually play this song now though!!
Wish I had this in highschool when I transcribed the whole thing by ear but can sight read sheet music.. FML what a bloody fun time that was though. Etched into my memory, still hum it some days now over a decade later.

Hey Nathan, L.D. means Lip Down (lower lip), actually playing just a bit with a flat intonation, this being done by giving less pressure with the lower lip (but really keeping a good airsupport with your diapraghm, otherwise it will sound very shaky it you may even fail to produce te note). Hope this helps

I use a high G fingering that's just front F but you take off the middle finger. Honestly altissimo is mostly about overtones, so start practicing those if you want to get really nice sounds out of the horn.
@@slightlybasic2431 That's super helpful! I'll give it a shot when I'm at my horn. I've got different fingerings I use for that G. On my alto, 1-3-4-6 +octave sings in tune. On my tenor, 1-3-4-RH high F# +octave is best. I honestly don't usually go that high on bari. Altissimo is wacky.
@@sinisterniik Yeah altissimo really is weird. I can still only play F#, G and for some reason D, which is why I'm practicing overtones to make it work. I guess I just got lucky I had been using a fingering that worked for learning this song.
one way to play high g, if you have an f sharp key, hold the front f and the f sharp, thats how i get a high g on my tenor. though not convenient for switching from gfd gfd and etc.
Are these changes exactly what the piano player played or just to the chart? Some are very different from what I thought they were supposed be, specifically the F7 after Dm in the A section, thought that was a Bb Maj 7
I wanna see Leo P or someone do those really high note in the beginning and the solo, probably because I’m going into 9th grade but those highs are impossible even with altissimo keys because you have to play reallllyy fast
Hey, that's an indication of a "glissando", meaning those notes are connected with a rapid succesion of all the notes chromatically (ever half tone) in between. Nothing bari specific, applicable to all instruments 🙂 hope that helps
Hi Ian, that's to indicate a so called "false fingering", where you take an alternate way of fingering the same note. In this case you'd have to play F with the front key, and to get the alternate fingering sound you press 123 in the right hand. Go back and forth a bit and you'll hear a clear etxture shift between two F's up there. Hope that helps, Jorre

hearing sax players miss altissimo then finally get it is so satisfying

Tonguing at that speed would be somewhat difficult if you don’t practice articulation much, but he’s definitely not tonguing all those he’s slurring.
Well actually he is trilling with the two notes which is the "musical" term
