While the infantry definitely have a WW2 vibe to them, I'd say they're overall a bit more Cold War. The Chimera is a bit of a hybrid between all the Soviet BMP variants with a bit of BTR in there (the wheeled Chimeras are very BTR) and Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) weren't really a thing in WW2 (though I'm sure you could find examples of up-gunned APCs acting in a similar capacity or other such weird one-offs if you looked hard enough). The Chimera is definitely more of an IFV than an APC, it's meant to stick around providing fire support or allow troops to fight from inside it if the battlefield is heavily irradiated or otherwise uninhabitable, it's not just a battle taxi. The word "Armageddon" is also pretty evocative of nuclear war, so I don't think the Cold War vibe is coincidental.

the atmosphere thing is largely misrepresented.. the atmosphere itself is not toxic. certain parts of the world however have been covered in toxic dust and the like, and when operating in those places you need masks to prevent the dust being blown around and kicked up from being breathed in. the hive cities have atmospheric handling systems to prevent the dust from getting in, while when you go far enough from the cities and the toxic deserts, you find more conventional forests, jungles, etc. the accounts of stuff burning and so on refer to destroyed hivecities and imperial outposts, where thingsl ike promethium wells have been set ablaze and building fires burn uncontrolled. (in the later, often started by orks in the very cities where they now live.) while the Steel Legion (armageddon's PDF) largely specialized in operating in the planet's toxic deserts as a result of those being where the majority of the important imperial stuff is located (and is largely why said deserts are now toxic), there are a number of other specialized forces on the world fighting in those other environments. for example, a large amount of catachan jungle fighters were brought in to fight the Orks in the equatorial jungles during the 2nd war (a process that quickly became multi-generational for those regiments, a colony in all but name. these are the 'ork hunters' mentioned. since they've been on the world for centuries though, the catachan connection is often overlooked) the third last chancer's novel, Annihilation squad, takes place largely on Armageddon, with a team of Penal legion troops being led on a kill team mission to infiltrate an ork held hive city to assassinate a human traitor. to get there they have to land on the planet and make their way through both the jungles and the deserts, interacting with imperial troops along the way.
The Sisters wear power armour, although the human version, not the Space Marines version. It's still a pressurized suit that can filter most toxines out, if they put their helmets on, they could literally go to space and fight there ^^

I'm disappointed Kirioth didn't outline why the Steel Legion are SO effective: Because they're ALL mechanised units. All of their formations having chimeras (due to how AGGRESSIVELY polluted the world of Armageddon is, even wearing the huge coats and gas masks only protects them for a few hours) means that if one of them went rogue they would be FAR harder to deal with, as they would have no easy counter. Basically, all formations have an easy counter. if a tank formation went rogue, a bomber or artillery formation would deal with them. But all of them being mechanised complicated that, and is usually not allowed. The only reason the Steel Legion get away with that is because they're just THAT loyal.
I'm here working on my first 40k army that is exactly Armageddon Stele Legion and see this on my feed. I literally feel like the guy on that Junji Ito "This hole was made for me" meme.

i would love to see the big 2 commissars, cain and yarick, chatting in the afterlife, sharing stories of the utter bullshit they both dealt with in life
What made the Blitzkrieg so effective was the fact before the main tank doctrine used was basically a bunch of tanks the bigger the better scattered across infantry regiments to be used in a supporting role where as the Germans had all there tanks concentrated in specific areas
Yup the Raumjaeger kit. If you want Imperial Guard done within a reasonable budget, go Wargames Atlantic. £25 for a box of 30 guys vs £20 for a box of 10 from GW. They got your covered for Steel Legion, Vostroyans/Krieg (in one kit), basic infantry (available in both male and female kits), actual modern looking Catchans, Praetorian Guard/Mordian Iron Guard (again in one kit) and even Colonial Marines/Cadian kits. If you aren't going to official GW tournaments (of which I think there's like..maybe one or two major ones, even in the UK GW only has ONE official tournament because it's a Warhammer World) then you can actually build your Guard army fairly cheaply.
Funny how the Death Korps of Krieg started out as a repaint of the Steel Legion, and now people who want to make a Steel Legion army will often repaint Death Korps of Krieg.

Catachan vs Warp Spider Kill Team box when?
What’s your favorite quote in reference to either the Steel Legion or Armageddon?
This is mine…
“I will die on this world. I will die on Armageddon.”
-Reclusiarch Marek Grimaldus of the Black Templars.
"Hero of Helsreach", they chant. As if there is only one.

-Paraphrased of what he actually said in the 2nd War as the Gargants approached.
This was one of the best uses of LGBTQ+ being represented. As in it's only a part of who he is and not does it ever define his character. Simply put, Yarrick isn't a LGBTQ+ charcter, he's a character that happens to be LGBTQ+.
"Herman Von Straub, you are under arrest."
- Dante to Von Straub. That felt *ssooo* good to hear after dealing with all of Straubs stupidity.

Best quote in all of adric period. WP sir.
Them talking about the “atmosphere and nature” of and the reason for always wearing those uniforms on Armageddon made me realize somethings…
-One: How have Yarrick, Von Straub, the civilians, the nobles, sisters of Batter, outside allies, etc, survived for so long?
-Two: Humanity has a habit of creating manmade death worlds, and/or destroying a planets' natural environment via exterminatus, forge worlds, or just Armageddon and Terra in general.
-Three: The fact that humans are still able to not simply survive but thrive on a place like Armageddon either speaks volumes to humans or shows the writers ability to be consistent.
-Four: If JRR Tolkien, the guy the made Princess Mononoke, Lovecraft, the Lorax, or any environmental activist since the 1960s ever read about this, 40k manmade death works, or forge worlds, they'd feel vindicated and horrified.
the atmosphere thing is largely misrepresented.. the atmosphere itself is not toxic. certain parts of the world however have been covered in toxic dust and the like, and when operating in those places you need masks to prevent the dust being blown around and kicked up from being breathed in. the hive cities have atmospheric handling systems to prevent the dust from getting in, while when you go far enough from the cities and the toxic deserts, you find more conventional forests, jungles, etc. the accounts of stuff burning and so on refer to destroyed hivecities and imperial outposts, where thingsl ike promethium wells have been set ablaze and building fires burn uncontrolled. (in the later, often started by orks in the very cities where they now live.)
while the Steel Legion (armageddon's PDF) largely specialized in operating in the planet's toxic deserts as a result of those being where the majority of the important imperial stuff is located (and is largely why said deserts are now toxic), there are a number of other specialized forces on the world fighting in those other environments. for example, a large amount of catachan jungle fighters were brought in to fight the Orks in the equatorial jungles during the 2nd war (a process that quickly became multi-generational for those regiments, a colony in all but name. these are the 'ork hunters' mentioned. since they've been on the world for centuries though, the catachan connection is often overlooked)
the third last chancer's novel, Annihilation squad, takes place largely on Armageddon, with a team of Penal legion troops being led on a kill team mission to infiltrate an ork held hive city to assassinate a human traitor. to get there they have to land on the planet and make their way through both the jungles and the deserts, interacting with imperial troops along the way.
sisters of batter? do they bake
The Sisters wear power armour, although the human version, not the Space Marines version. It's still a pressurized suit that can filter most toxines out, if they put their helmets on, they could literally go to space and fight there ^^
One answer is actually Space Wolves. They protected Armageddon from inquisitorial cleansing xD
They wore their helmets and masks. In the novels it nigh always mentions that Yarrick puts on his mask once they get farther away from the city.

Try out Helsreach for the next book club! One of the best 40k space marine books imo and it heavily features Armageddon, the steel legion, some titans, some sisters of battle, and a bit of yarrick. It follows one of the best space marine characters, Chaplain Grimaldus of the black templars, leading the defense of the hive city Helsreach against (yet another) ork invasion and how he has to compromise to overcome an impossible situation whilst grappling with his own nihilistic certainty of death. If it doesn't turn you into a black templars fan, nothing will. It has a fantastic audiobook too.
I’m seeing/reading a lot of space marines in this description and I can feel my interest slipping away at record speed.

Steel legion best regiment. Imagine using trench warfare in the 42 millennia and not mechanised infantry. lmao
To be fair, as the war in Ukraine has shown, trenches still have inarguable utility, even now. If you need to defend a position, rather than attack, they work very well.
@@Bluecho4 Krieg for Defense, Steel Legion for Offence, Cadians for Propaganda
Ironically the Steel Legion still utilizes trenches and a lot of other defenses.
@@luminaaeterna1259 Nah. Cadian's have the highest record for Defense. The whole thing about 'the Guard dies standing' is taken directly from the Cadian motto for battle.
Steel Legion is for wiping out armies on open fields. Their whole thing is go in fast and unload on the enemy. These guys can drift with tanks.
Krieg are for attacking Fortified positions. They are all about sappers, snipers, and artillery. They are at their best when sieging.

Aren't the Steel Legion's tactics based on Soviet Cold War tactics? The Soviets invented the Infantry Fighting Vehicle with their BMP line, hence the ASL's heavy reliance on Chimera IFVs.
Tactically yes, Aesthetically no, which is why the confusion is so common.
@@KimmyTheForsaken Agreed. On the uniform and design aspect they are mostly German and a bit British. On the tactics side they are soviet cold war and German. While on the cultural side (industries with boat loads of tanks) they are soviet cold war/ maybe end of ww2 soviets? BEST REGIMENT, LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!!
Also, no mention of the fact that Orks are drawn to Armageddon because it's actually Ullanor Prime, their home planet? It was moved by the Mechanicus after the War of the Beast(IIRC) to a different sector and renamed.
Also, no mention of the fact that Steel Legion are the OG Gas Mask Boys, and that Krieg started as a simple recolor of SL models in a White Dwarf article.
i think more likely 30k started the wars of Armageddon as Armageddon use to be a planet named Ulanor which was essentially the Ork home world
I'm disappointed Kirioth didn't outline why the Steel Legion are SO effective: Because they're ALL mechanised units.
I painted DK killteam as the steel legion Iron Heads and even painted and "unpainted" tank for the them to harken back to that factory fight. It's still one of my favorite things on my shelves.

Ah I was looking for this comment.
i would love to see the big 2 commissars, cain and yarick, chatting in the afterlife, sharing stories of the utter bullshit they both dealt with in life
What made the Blitzkrieg so effective was the fact before the main tank doctrine used was basically a bunch of tanks the bigger the better scattered across infantry regiments to be used in a supporting role where as the Germans had all there tanks concentrated in specific areas
We now need an Ork cyclist that goes on the "Toor da 'Umie-gedd'in" and his last name needs to be Orkstrong.

The power of the waagh keeps Yarrick alive as he is unkillable and probably in a display in Trayzen's museum.
Wargames atlantic has some great Steel legion Stand in miniatures
Now I want a dedicated 3 parter for the first, second and third war for armageddon
Cadia is the "I'm just Ken" of 40k
And Armageddon is the "I'm just Pete"
Funny how the Death Korps of Krieg started out as a repaint of the Steel Legion, and now people who want to make a Steel Legion army will often repaint Death Korps of Krieg.

I have a collection of one of every mass produced Vostroyan Sculpt so I feel the need clarify some things that Kirioth has said here.
There was are 22 Vostroyan minis(not including the dead trooper sculpts), counting the heavy weapons teams as 1 each.
This included a Command Squad (Commander, MasterVox, Medic, Random Special Weapon, Standard Bearer),
an Infantry Squad (Sergeant, Random Heavy Weapons Team, 6 Individual Troopers, Random Special Weapon Trooper),
sculpts for Flamer, Grenade Launcher, Plasma Gun,(I've only ever seen Converted Meltaguns),
sculpts for Heavy Bolter, Lascannon, Mortar, and 2 different Sniper Sculpts (I've never seen minis for Vostroyan Autocannon and Missile Launcher that weren't Converted),
they also did 4 total Officer Sculpts and 1 Sergeant Sculpt.
Tl:dr The Vostroyans had a mini, for all but 3 weapon options
oh, Mister Kirioth, the grot tank situation is worse than you think...
I almost got some 3D printed, but they don't even have a points listing anymore.
I am beside myself, quite frankly
check battlescribe. They have all the legends units listed that are accurate to GW's legends
I mean they obviously Arma-get-it-on to increase numbers.
That old Mad TV sketch has dwelt in my brain just for this moment.
Also, not a Guard player. But a 'happy' medium is to have more custom kits, like Marines have.
I really wanted GW to pursue the Yarrick got killed by Angron thing. Then we could get Gaz vs Angron. But maybe if the Orks believe that Yarrick will return if he’s avenged than he would get revived by Ork warp shenanigans
how dare you put this evil on me.
32:12 i spot a tinge of yellow in that corner
I personally think his power claw would be called Throatsnapper or something along those lines.
There's two major Guards regiments specialized in killing Orks, the Steel legion, and the Valhallans that also got invaded by Orks in the past. They're the soviet-looking ones who come from an ice world and love so much cold climates taht even mild temperatures make them sweat profusly, but they're in no sleeves T-shirts in the snow XD
Definitely would be fine if yarrick was still alive, kept living exclusively through the Waaagh power of Gaz and the Goffs love for fighting him. He's just willed into being as an avatar of "a proper fight" lol
